How Hacker Lex Outshines the Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park

T-Rex, with your tiny arms in proportion to your body, step aside; you're not the star of Jurassic Park.

T-Rex, with your tiny arms in proportion to your body, step aside; you're not the star of Jurassic Park. That title goes to Lex Murphy, the granddaughter of park creator John Hammond. She may have started the film as a scaredy cat, but Lex triumphs in the end to save the day with her early '90s computing skills.

Not only does she fight off a T-Rex from eating herself and her brother in the Jeep (even though she kind of brought his attention to them in the first place with the flashlight), she also outwits a pair of annoying raptors in the theme park's kitchen, like any responsible big sister would. Naturally, our favorite scenes with Lex also include some of the film's best lines, with her enthusiasm for 1993 technology, made all that much better — and cheesier — with a 2013 ear.

You may have had Encyclopedia Britannica on your family's first home computer, but Lex recognized the awesomeness that is the Jurassic Park jeep's interactive CD-ROM. But nothing is as BA as her using her hacking skills ("It's a Unix system!") to reprogram the park's security system before hungry dinosaurs can barrel through an unlocked door and make all the group's running through the night and rain for naught.

So, Lex, thanks for being a Geek We Love and showing the world that being a hacker nerd is how you get things done when a theme park of rageful, starving dinosaurs goes into emergency lockdown.

Build Your Own Jurassic Park — No Nedry Needed

Based on our level of excitement for Jurassic Park 3D, you'd think we hadn't already watched the film 23 times since its 1993 debut.

Based on our level of excitement for Jurassic Park 3D, you'd think we hadn't already watched the film 23 times since its 1993 debut. Nothing can crush our love of dinosaurs, not even what happens when ancient animals come to life on a remote island. Rather than wishing for a real-life version, we'll opt for crafting a virtual dino park from the safety of an iPhone with the Jurassic Park Builder game (free, with in-app purchase options) for iOS.

The game's more SimCity than it is action-packed running-from-a-T-Rex thrills. Players are guided through the ins and outs of building a theme park on land or underwater with prehistoric attractions by the movie's stars John Hammond, Ian Malcolm (hello, Jeff Goldblum!), and Dr. Grant. Expand the park with new buildings and hotels, than take care of the dinosaurs well enough to add more to the menagerie — over 30 varieties in total.

As you progress, show off your creations with Facebook sharing, but whatever you do, don't share the plans with a character named Dennis Nedry!

Future Jurassic Park? Dinosaur Feathers Found in Amber

Could this be the start of a real-life Jurassic Park?

Could this be the start of a real-life Jurassic Park? Paleontologists from the University of Alberta recently published their findings on dinosaur and bird feathers preserved in amber in the journal Science. Dating back over 78 million years, the feathered findings indicate winged creatures of early Earth may have had similarities to modern birds. Here's what you need to know about this historic finding:

  • Why it matters — The primitive feathers found in amber are nearly identical to those of today's birds. The report says that these early feather specimens are attributable to dinosaurs before they went extinct.
  • Amber preservation — The feathers are in such vivid detail because the tree resin that preserves them has its own antibacterial and drying properties that slow normal decay.
  • Jurassic Park? — Despite the similarities to Jurassic Park's storyline of finding dino DNA preserved in amber, a future theme park won't be in the works anytime soon. The specimens discovered in Canada are very small and don't contain any DNA material. Your Jeff Goldblum-inspired vacation plans are foiled again.

Buzz Lines: What's Your Favorite Quote From Jurassic Park?

If you were alive and well during the early '90s, chances are good that you saw a little Steven Spielberg flick called Jurassic Park.

If you were alive and well during the early '90s, chances are good that you saw a little Steven Spielberg flick called Jurassic Park. At the time, we were dazzled (and disturbed) by the lifelike big-screen dinosaurs, and as far as I'm concerned, the movie has stood the test of time — especially for its quotes. I still find myself repeating some of the film's lines, so check out my favorites then add your own in the comments.

  • "He left us! He left us!" — Lex
  • "Hold on to your butts." — Ray Arnold
  • "Clever girl." — Muldoon

Continue or Kill: Jurassic Park

These days if the Hollywood bigwigs aren't remaking something, they're tacking on more sequels to an existing franchise.

These days if the Hollywood bigwigs aren't remaking something, they're tacking on more sequels to an existing franchise. Franchises are getting reboots and TV shows are being brought back to life with all new casts. Sometimes it can be a good thing (Star Trek) but certain ideas probably should have been killed (cough! 90210 cough!).

So instead of lamenting remake or reboot ideas right off the bat, I thought I'd put it to a vote.

Recently producer Frank Marshall talked about some upcoming projects, including Jurassic Park 4. They don't have a story yet and Marshall says the story is what will decide if this project goes through or not. So it's not a done deal! Like so many others, I am a big fan of the first Jurassic Park movie, but the sequels . . . not so much.

What do you think? Should they try to revive this dinosaur franchise? Or let it go extinct?
