Sir Ian McKellen, an Actual Knight, Calls Donald Trump "Un-American"

This week, Sir Ian McKellen stopped in on the Variety studio at Cannes Lions. In addition to advocating for a gay James Bond, the legendary actor also took a moment to lay a few insults on Donald Trump. When asked how he felt about Trump's recent moves to strip the LGBTQ community of its rights — including his administration's well-documented opposition to same-sex marriage and dangerous transgender bathroom policies — McKellen was quite frank.

"I can't follow Mr. Trump," he said bluntly. "I don't always understand what he says and when I do, I have to admit later that I got it wrong because he changed his mind, or changed his mind about what he said. He's a very bad communicator, at least to me. Get more straightforward, Donald. And then we can take you seriously." McKellen continued, addressing the question: "If what you're saying is true, it's appalling and quite unnecessary and very un-American. The gay rights movement began in America. It began in San Francisco, it began in Stonewall, the city where Donald Trump was born and thrived."

This isn't the first time McKellen has spoken out about Trump. In January, he posted a lengthy social media post after participating in the Women's March in London. "He's had his chance," McKellen wrote. Considering how his former X-Men co-star and current best friend Patrick Stewart actually applied for U.S. citizenship to fight Trump, we can only hope McKellen will continue to do what he does best: eloquently shade our President.
