A Wild Wicked-Inspired Sixth Birthday Party

Photographer (and supercreative mom of twins) Melanie Monroe jumped to the challenge when her girls requested a Wicked-inspired sixth birthday party. "This party was so much fun to plan! I started a Pinterest board months ago and got lots of great ideas!" Melanie says. "During Halloween, I was able to get some great witch decorations, and I was able to snag some fun green items for the 'Emerald City Dress-Up Boutique' when all the St. Patrick's Day items came out right after Christmas." Add in karaoke, a Flying Monkey zip line, a Madame Morrible tornado ride, and Glinda and Elphaba cupcakes, and you have one "wicked" cool party for two lucky twins, beautifully photographed by Amy Gray. Wicked to Be Adapted as a TV Miniseries

Wicked is going to try defying gravity on TV: it will be made into a miniseries courtesy of Salma Hayek's production company. The series will be an eight-hour TV event and will air on ABC.

Although the musical is wildly popular (and is already getting its own movie version), this project will be based on Gregory Maguire's original book and not the Broadway play. It's good news for those who wanted to see an adaptation straight from the novel.

What do you think of the decision to base the miniseries on the book and put it on the small screen? Do you have any casting ideas?

Buzz In: Who Would You Cast in the Movie Version of Wicked?

Well here's something for the "I can't believe it took this long" file: the wildly popular musical Wicked will soon be getting the big screen treatment. Universal is reportedly in talks with directors, and the impressive list of potential candidates includes J.J. Abrams, Rob Reiner, and Glee's Ryan Murphy.

For those of you not familiar with the story, Wicked is the "untold story" of Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. It follows her childhood into school where she meets a very different Glinda than the one we've come to know and love, right up to the point where Dorothy comes in. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba respectively, and it's hard to imagine any other actresses taking on the roles for the film version. There are a few who could fill the shoes though — I could see Anne Hathaway as Elphaba with the help of some green makeup, and Reese Witherspoon could be a great Glinda (especially after showing off her pipes in Walk the Line). Who would you cast?

Wicked the Movie: Based on the Book or the Musical? Or Both?

There's exciting news swirling around lately that the Broadway musical Wicked will definitely be made into a movie.

There's exciting news swirling around lately that the Broadway musical Wicked will definitely be made into a movie. According to Variety, Universal Pictures (the same studio behind Mamma Mia!) is taking "formative steps" to get Wicked into movie theaters soon.

Like so many others, I have a history with the Broadway show that started with enjoying the book by Gregory Maguire that inspired the stage show. I thought his satirical vision of Oz as a dark land rife with political issues and tensions was a cool twist on an old tale we all know.

The book also takes a closer look at Elphaba (a.k.a. The Wicked Witch of the West), depicting her as an insecure girl who comes of age as an outsider because of the way she looks (it's seriously not easy being green). This is the part of Maguire's work that the musical is focused on.

I know that the musical is beloved by many, but long before there were any songs, I totally envisioned a Tim Burton-esque adaptation of the book that was at once fantastical and dark. So what are you hoping for? Should they make a straight adaptation of the musical, or should they draw a little more from the book when making the film version? Or maybe there's something in the middle, like Burton's Sweeney Todd.
