Star Wars: You'll Love BB-8 Even More After Finding Out Who Voices Him

As anyone who has seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens can attest to, BB-8 is adorable. Here's the droid, in all of his cute, metallic glory. Look at him go!

What you may not know about the lil' guy is that he's voiced by a couple of guys you might be familiar with. Bill Hader, the actor you love from Saturday Night Live and Trainwreck, is named as "BB-8 Vocal Consultant" in the credits.

So what exactly does that mean? Hader confessed to HitFix that it's not quite as technological as you might think. Here's what his job consisted of: "J.J. [Abrams] f*cking around with this sound-effects app on his iPad that was attached to a talk box operated by me. It looked ridiculous but it made BB-8's voice. At first I tried doing a voice, but we all agreed it sounded too human." He wasn't the only vocal consultant; Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation's Jean-Ralphio) also lent his voice!

Turns out, he worked on a short-lived show called Undercovers with Abrams, who got in touch with Schwartz when he was experimenting with BB-8's voice. "We tried having me talk into a mic that synthesized the voice immediately, and that kind of worked," Schwartz said in an interview with GQ. "I cannot express to you how fun it was. We just played. We had every synthesizer." In fact, he was so excited about finally being able to share the news that he Instragrammed about it.
