Winona Ryder almost lost one of the most iconic roles of her career to another brunette star of her generation. In a new Q&A with Interview magazine and Tavi Gevinson, Winona says her part in Heathers was a near miss.

"I was not the first choice for Veronica in Heathers. I auditioned and they were like, 'Oh, thanks.' And I went to the Beverly Center to Macy's and had them do a makeover on me," she said. "I went back because I kind of knew that they thought I wasn't pretty enough. They were trying to get Jennifer Connelly."

Heathers was one of Winona's first breakout roles — it was released in 1988, the same year she starred in Beetlejuice. Can you imagine anyone else as Veronica all these years later? Because we can't.
