Another Spinoff of "The Walking Dead" Is Coming: What We Know About the "Dead City"

The Walking Dead universe is expanding even further with the forthcoming spinoff, "The Walking Dead: Dead City." The popular zombie, post-apocalyptic saga is based on the eponymous comic book series created by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, and Tony Moore. The long-running AMC show, "The Walking Dead" — which premiered in 2010 — is currently airing its eleventh and final season and has already spawned several offshoots, including 2015's "Fear the Walking Dead," and "The Walking Dead: World Beyond," which wrapped after two seasons that aired between 2020 and 2021.

Formerly titled "The Walking Dead: Isle of the Dead," "Dead City" is among several more new Walking Dead spinoff series officially in the works, including the anthology, "Tales of the Walking Dead" — which began airing in Sept. 2022 — and an untitled project featuring Daryl (Norman Reedus) as the lead. "Dead City" is set to follow Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) as they navigate a dystopic Manhattan together. Continue reading for all the details we have so far about the highly anticipated Walking Dead spinoff project, including confirmed cast members.

"The Walking Dead: Dead City" Plot

"Dead City" will see Negan and Maggie travel "into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror," per the official logline for the upcoming series. The unlikely pairing will definitely make for some dramatic narrative, as the two had not been on the best of terms after Negan killed Maggie's husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). The series will likely explore their redemptive character arcs as they find a semblance of mutually beneficial partnership, or perhaps a friendship, better still.

"The Walking Dead: Dead City" Cast

In addition to Morgan and Cohan reprising their roles of Negan and Maggie, respectively, Deadline confirmed in April 2022 that "Friday Night Lights" alum Gaius Charles will play Perlie Armstrong in the forthcoming series.

According to his character description, Perlie is "confident, ruthless, and unyielding in the pursuit of what he believes in justice, with the force of his will and his menace. He enjoys his work and intersperses humor with the terror he incites. This is a family man, devoted to building a safe world for his wife and daughters. His journey unearths a loss he is haunted by. He has patience and resilience and walks rather than runs from his mistakes."

Any additional cast members or potential franchise crossovers are yet to be announced. "The Walking Dead" writer and co-executive producer Eli Jorné has joined the project as its showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Morgan and Cohan are also set to executive produce "Dead City," while Scott M. Gimple, "The Walking Dead"'s producer, writer, and showrunner, has come aboard as the chief content officer of the franchise to oversee the production.
