Is 4*Town From "Turning Red" a Real Boy Band?

No, 4*Town is not a real band, but a purely fictional one designed to elicit the familiar feelings of fangirling over boy bands Mei and her teenaged friends experience in "Turning Red." Anyone who was (or is) a fan of Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Boys II Men, One Direction, BTS, or any other popular boy band can certainly relate.

But just because 4*Town isn't technically a real band doesn't mean they haven't achieved some very real accomplishments. Their single "Nodody Like U" debuted at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Mar. 29, 2022, which is a chart achievement some of today's biggest, not to mention real, musical acts would kill for. The cherry on top: "Nobody Like U" has been nominated for best song written for visual media at the 2023 Grammys.

Watch 4*Town Perform "Nobody Like U" Live

And just because 4*Town isn't technically a real band doesn't mean there aren't any real-life performances of their music. On Jan. 18, 2023, Character Media uploaded a live performance of 4*Town songs, which took place at the 20th Annual Unforgettable Gala on Dec. 17, 2022, on YouTube. The gala honors "Asian Pacific Islander creatives and leaders in entertainment, the arts, and culture," according to the event's website.

For the performance (for which big-name actors like Sandra Oh and Simu Liu were in attendance to bear witness and dance along to), singers Will Jay and Raymond Ortiz joined original 4*Town voice actors Josh Levi, Topher Ngo, and Grayson Villanueva in performing "1 True Love" and "Nobody Like U" from "Turning Red." Check out the amazing performance above.

It's unclear why Jordan Fisher and Finneas weren't on hand to partake in the 4*Town performance at the Unforgettable Gala, but fans are probably crossing their fingers that they'll take part in a potential performance at the Grammys, considering the song is nominated!

VERSE 1
I've never met nobody like you
Had friends and I've had buddies, it's true
But they don't turn my tummy the way you do
I've never met nobody like you

CHORUS
You're never not on my mind, oh my, oh my
I'm never not by your side, your side, your side
I'm never gon' let you cry, oh cry, don't cry
I'll never not be your ride, or die, alright

VERSE 2
Let's call it what it is, it's a masterpiece
Got a whole lotta love for them city streets (Glendale!)
Tonight is the place to be
Got a big boombox and a new CD
Come on, everybody, let's tear it up
If you want mad skills, you can share with us
I want everybody to stop and stare
And you know why, it's me (Robaire!)
Ooh
Uh (it's too good)
Yeah, ha-ha-ha
(Let's go!)

CHORUS
You're never not on my mind, oh my, oh my
I'm never not by your side, your side, your side
I'm never gon' let you cry, oh cry, don't cry
I'll never not be your ride, or die, alright

How Old Are the 4*Town Members in "Turning Red"?

While the members of 4*Town's ages aren't explicitly stated, it's safe to assume they're in their late teens to early 20s like typical '90s boy bands tended to be. Beyond that, according to the official 4*Town website, Tae Young is the youngest member, while Jesse — who was pursuing a ceramics degree at an art university before 4*Town took off — is the oldest.

Why Are They Called 4*Town if They Have 5 Members?

Why Are They Called 4*Town if They Have 5 Members?

At one point in "Turning Red," Mei's mom asks her this very question, and it certainly echos viewers' thoughts as they watch the movie. Well, there's no real answer to this very valid question, unfortunately.

The number four in 4*Town could be a play on the fact that two members in the band have the same name (Aaron T. and Aaron Z.) and fans sometimes group them together ("Jesse went to art school, Tae fosters injured doves, Robiare speaks French . . . and Aaron T. and Aaron Z. are, like, really talented, too!" Mei says at one point).

It could also be the movie's creators poking fun at boy bands whose number of members don't match the number in their name. There have been quite a few throughout history. Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer has only four members, K-pop group Seventeen has only 13 members, and British boy band 5ive now perform with just three members. So it seems like having 4*Town have five members is left unexplained because it's meant to be inexplicable, and that's what makes it peak boy band!

What Is 4*Town's Fandom Name in "Turning Red"?

When Mei reminds her friends that no boy can compare to the members of 4*Town at the beginning of the movie, she refers to 4*Town fans as "4*Townees."

Considering "Turning Red" takes place in 2002 and fandom names didn't truly take hold until the social media age, this dialogue seems to be a nod to the more recent trend of giving celebrity fandoms names (BTS have ARMY, One Direction had Directioners, Ariana Grande has the Arianators, and so on).

Who Inspired 4*Town in "Turning Red"?

Undeniably, 4*Town is inspired by the sound of teen pop in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as well as the popularity of boy bands during the time. In the "Turning Red" featurette, Finneas talks about the unique sound many boy bands produced at the time, saying, "Song's in the style of early-2000s boy band…It's the really catchy melody and harmonies, the claps, and choreography."

Additionally, Domee Shi told Insider that 4*Town was directly inspired by 90s and 2000s boy bands: Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Westlife, 98 Degrees, and O-Town. On the influence, Shi said, "We really just wanted them to be a direct homage to the boy bands of that era and also add like a contemporary spin."

Shi also wanted to honor the worldwide popularity of K-pop, which also influenced 4*Town. The director said, "They're more diverse and there's definitely a homage to K-Pop in there with Tae Young, the cute member of 4*Town." Fans of the BTS group speculated Tae Young was inspired by BTS member Jimin because of their uncanny resemblance, which could definitely be true considering how K-pop influenced 4*Town.
