Twin Peaks: What You Forgot About How the Original Series Ended

In one of the show's creepiest moments, Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) emerges from the Black Lodge a little . . . off. It's revealed only to viewers that the demonic killer Bob (Frank Silva) has inhabited Cooper's body, as Cooper smashes his face into a mirror and repeatedly asks in a manic voice, "How's Annie? How's Annie?" with BOB's reflection staring back at him.

Presumably Cooper has not been possessed by a murderous spirit all these years, but one never knows with David Lynch. Perhaps the first batch of episodes is figuring out how to rid Cooper of Bob's spirit . . . though that would probably mean Cooper has been on a killing spree for two decades, and that just doesn't seem right.

After her ordeal in the Black Lodge, we don't get much closure with Annie (Heather Graham), but Sheriff Truman (Michael Ontkean) tells Cooper she's in the hospital and is going to be OK. Graham is reportedly not a part of the Twin Peaks revival, but it would not surprise us in the least if Lynch managed to work her into the revival and kept it a complete secret. Security and secrecy around the new episodes have been very strict, so there's always a chance we get a surprise Annie appearance.

Season one siren Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) really gets the short end of the stick in the back half of season two once Laura's mystery is resolved. Her storyline becomes increasingly silly, and we last see her chaining herself to a bank vault to protest the Ghostwood Estates project and its environmental impact. When Andrew Packard (Dan O'Herlihy) is subsequently blown up by a bomb in Thomas Eckhardt's (David Warner) safety deposit box, Audrey's fate is left up in the air. It was later revealed that if there had been a third season, Audrey would have lived — and in fact, she almost got her own spinoff show, which was eventually turned into Lynch's Oscar-nominated film Mulholland Drive (which by then did not involve the character of Audrey Horne).

After some fighting over what to do with Shelly's abusive husband Leo (Eric DaRe) and some brief flirtations with other people, Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook) and Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick) reunite in the season two finale. Leo presumably falls victim to Windom Earle's (Kenneth Welsh) tarantula trap, though even if he had somehow managed to escape, DaRe is not listed as returning to Twin Peaks. It'll be interesting to see if the show's most dysfunctional-yet-sometimes-adorable couple is still together in the revival.

It is revealed in the final few episodes that Eileen Hayward (Mary Jo Deschanel) had a long-ago affair with Benjamin Horne (Richard Beymer) and that he is actually Donna's (Lara Flynn Boyle) biological father, not Dr. Will Hayward (Warren Frost) as she had always believed. In the finale, Ben and Will come to blows in the Hayward living room, with the good doctor knocking Horne out cold.

Boyle is not appearing in the revival, but both Dr. Hayward and Ben Horne are, so perhaps we'll get to see how these two older gentlemen came to resolve their family drama — if they ever even did.

Just prior to Leland's (Ray Wise) death, he says that Laura is welcoming him to the other side. But both Laura and her lookalike cousin Maddy (both played by Sheryl Lee) are seen in the Black Lodge sequence in the finale. Now, they both could certainly have been evil doppelgangers of themselves, but perhaps they are the real deal, their fear holding them captive in the Black Lodge. Lee is appearing in the revival, but the context of her appearance is as yet unknown. Will it be strictly dreams or flashbacks? Or might someone be venturing into the Black Lodge to find her?

The chaos at the Miss Twin Peaks Pageant leaves Nadine (Wendy Robie) suffering from a head wound that jars her back to reality and her marriage to Ed (Everett McGill), just when he and his true love Norma (Peggy Lipton) think they can finally be together. All three of them are appearing in the new episodes, but hopefully the love triangle has long since resolved itself. Ed and Norma really deserve to be happy, as does Nadine.

The one couple in Twin Peaks who actually got a happy ending when the original series went off the air is Lucy Moran (Kimmy Robertson) and Deputy Andy Brennan (Harry Goaz). In the finale, Lucy is pregnant and has chosen Andy over her other lover, Dick Tremayne (Ian Buchanan), saying it doesn't matter what her baby's actual paternity is; Andy is the father in her eyes. Hopefully these two are still living a quiet, simple life together, having raised their child (and maybe more) together in their sleepy little town.
