The TV Reboot of Heathers Is Coming, Chainsaw and All

It's no secret that we're in an age of incessant reboots. The Spider-Man franchise had just had its third go in the Marvel Universe. Netflix is bringing us the next chapter of Wet Hot American Summer. Even 1999's Jawbreaker is heading to TV. And now, there's another reimagined dark comedy heading to TV: Heathers. The interesting thing in this case is it's actually been a five-year process. Bravo first announced the project back in 2012 but later dropped it. It wasn't until late last year that TV Land announced their own plans to reboot the 1988 cult classic, and now, here we are! Here's what we already know about the upcoming TV show.

1. Who Are the Heathers?

The Wrap reports that the core group will be slightly tweaked for the new vision. Heather Chandler, Heather Duke, and Heather McNamara will be played by Melanie Field, Brendan Scannell, and Jasmine Mathews respectively. In this iteration, Heather Duke is genderqueer, and Heather McNamara is a black lesbian.

2. The Other Familiar Characters

The reboot features our two heroes, J.D. and Veronica. The characters will be portrayed by newcomers James Scully and Grace Victoria Cox. We're also seeing the return of an original star! Shannen Doherty, who originated the role of Heather Duke, confirmed her involvement with an Instagram snap! According to Deadline, she'll play a pivotal role in the pilot.

3. An Exciting New Cast Member

In addition to the core cast, we've already got a line in on a new addition. Selma Blair has joined the cast as Jade, Heather Duke's stepmother. She's "a stripper and menthol smoker who is rough around the edges but with a bit of glamour to her."

4. When Will It Air?

The show was originally set to debut on TV Land this Fall, but plans have shifted. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Heathers will air in early 2018. It will drop on Spike TV, which come January will rebrand to Paramount Network.
