Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney's "Madame Web" Is Coming Next February

Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney are entering the world of Spider-Man. Johnson is set to star as the titular character in the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff "Madame Web," which would make her the first woman superhero to appear in the main role in Sony's Marvel universe. Alongside Johnson will be "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus" star Sweeney, who will play a version of Spider-Woman named Julia Carpenter. In October 2022, Johnson, Sweeney, and some of their fellow cast members were spotted filming the movie on the streets of New York.

Madame Web, aka Cassandra Webb, appears in the comics as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis who is connected to a life-support system resembling a web. Due to her medical condition, she never actively fights any villains. It's unclear what changes will be made to the character for Johnson's iteration. Her main powers are psychic, and the character is a clairvoyant who can see the spider world, which means the movie would potentially be used to bridge together the other Sony spider films (like "Venom" and "Morbius"). The film adaptation is directed by S.J. Clarkson, with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless writing the screenplay.

Johnson talked about filming "Madame Web" in a January interview with Variety. "It was a wild experience," she said. "I don't think you can be prepped to go into anything like that, but I learned so much." She noted that right after, she started filming a small indie film, which was a very different environment. "I got a real taste of different kinds of cinema last year," she said.

Ahead, here's what we know about "Madame Web" so far.
