Lena Waithe Made Her Met Gala Appearance a Political Statement, and We Are Thrilled

Lena Waithe made quite the colorful splash at this year's Met Gala in NYC. The actress, comedian, and writer stepped out on the packed red carpet in an extravagant rainbow cape, a clear nod to the LGBTQ+ community and its symbolic rainbow pride flag. Lena has been on fire after winning an Emmy for the Thanksgiving coming-out episode she wrote for Master of None, and she's shown no signs of slowing down ever since.

Lena's cape was especially poignant given this year's Met Gala theme: "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination." Religion and sexuality have been at odds with each other throughout history, so the fact that Lena directly clashed the theme with such an overt LGBTQ+ statement was truly transcendent. Check out more angles when you read on, plus a couple extra shots with the incredible Frances McDormand. Slay.
