Thor's Tattoos in "Love and Thunder" Actually Have a Bittersweet Meaning

According to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even gods get impulse tattoos from time to time, and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is no exception. In "Thor: Love and Thunder," Thor's newly tatted back is revealed thanks to Zeus, played by Russell Crowe, who uncovers Thor's disguise (and all of his clothes in the process). But in case you missed their deeper meanings, a makeup artist from the film shared an up-close look at the designs in an Instagram post. Turns out, there's a lot more to these tattoos than you may have realized at first glance.

The largest and most easily identifiable piece on Thor's back is definitely his brother Loki's helmet, which features the words "RIP Loki" and a headstone in the center, as well as the phrase "Brothers" and a rose along the left side. On the right side of the helmet, Thor has a crescent moon, which is likely also in memory of his late brother, and a script listing the names of the people Thor has lost over the years. This includes his mother, Frigga; his father, Odin; his best friend, Heimdall (who was played by Idris Elba until his death in "Infinity Wars"); Loki (Tom Hiddleston); and finally, Tony and Natasha — the two Avengers who died in "Avengers: Endgame." At the bottom of his back, there's also a broken heart and a banner that reads "Rest in Mischief," a clear nod to Loki, the God of Mischief.

Loki and Thor have a complex relationship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Loki initially antagonizing his brother in the first "Thor" and "Avengers" movies. However, the brothers did have moments where they fought alongside one another, until Thor watched Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, kill Loki in front of him in "Avengers: Infinity War." Although Loki lives on in the Sacred Timeline, this marks the moment where Thor found out his brother, the original Loki, was gone forever. Despite their past, this clearly takes a toll on Thor, and it's enough to warrant a whole back of tattoos in loving memory of their relationship.
