Orange Is the New Black's Lea DeLaria on Being Butch
It took many years for Orange Is the New Black actress Lea DeLaria to come out to her parents. She was performing as "That F*cking Dyke" for eight years before she told them she was a lesbian. But when she did come out, she did so with a vengeance.
She took the opportunity not just to be heard but to listen, noting that understanding how her parents felt was just as important as how she felt. The three of them became stronger and more open through the experience.
Lea believes that to be truly happy, you have to love and accept yourself, and as a society, we still have a long way to go when it comes to creating an environment where everyone feels safe.
