Is It Unseemly That Filmmakers Are Calling For Polanski's Release?

There's no question that Roman Polanski is one of the greatest living directors. It's also clear that he's had tragedy in his life: he survived the Holocaust as a child in Poland and grieved the murder of his pregnant wife Sharon Tate by Charles Manson followers in 1969.

But no matter how mishandled his legal case was in the '70s after he plead guilty to having unlawful sexual relations with a 13-year-old after giving her champagne and part of a quaalude - he has evaded punishment and lived a life of luxury as a celebrated artist in Europe for over 30 years. I was taken aback when I read that 138 people in the film industry, including Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese, have signed a petition voicing their opposition to his recent arrest in Zurich, Switzerland, on his way to a ceremony honoring him.

Is there something unseemly about a group (largely made up of men) in a notoriously sexist industry standing up for someone who hasn't been punished for his sexual crime against a child? Is the fact that Polanski is an artist somehow a mitigating factor? I found it particularly galling that Woody Allen - who had an affair with his partner Mia Farrow's adopted teenage daughter and is now married to her - spoke out about what film producer Harvey Weinstein is calling "a terrible situation"? But that's me - what do you think?

Freida Takes a Break From Dev to Film With Josh

Freida Pinto popped up yesterday on the London set of her upcoming Woody Allen film. She was joined by Josh Brolin, who's also a part of the star-studded cast along with Naomi Watts and Anthony Hopkins. When she isn't hard at work, Freida has had her guy Dev Patel around to keep her company during breaks from his latest project, M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. The duo has enjoyed time together all across the globe, and they seem happy finding time for their relationship in the midst of their many exciting movie projects.

Fab Flash: Woody Allen and American Apparel Settle Lawsuit

Director Woody Allen and American Apparel's two-year battle have finally come to an end. American Apparel has agreed to pay Allen $5 million to settle a lawsuit claiming the company used his image on billboards and the Internet without his consent. “Naturally there is some relief of not having to go through a trial, but I also harbor a sense of remorse and sadness for not arguing an important issue regarding the First Amendment, particularly the ability of an individual or corporation to invoke the likeness of a public figure in a satiric and social statement,” said CEO and founder of American Apparel, Dov Charney, who also mentioned that the decision to settle the case was made on behalf of the company's insurance carrier. Good thing this trial is over; it was a weird one.

Movie Preview: Woody Allen's Whatever Works

In the trailer for Woody Allen's next movie, Whatever Works, Larry David's character Boris insists that "this is not the feel-good movie of the year." While that may be true, I feel pretty good after watching it! I don't know if it's the great cast (which includes Patricia Clarkson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Ed Begley Jr., among others), Allen's writing and direction, or just Larry David's delivery, but I found myself laughing quite a lot at the preview for this bizarre-looking film.

According to a press notice I received about the movie, Boris is "an eccentric New Yorker" who "abandons his upper-class life to lead a more bohemian existence. He meets a young girl from the South [Evan Rachel Wood] and her family and no two people seem to get along in the entanglements that follow." Whatever Works opens in limited release June 19. Mary-Kate and ERW Kick Off Tribeca With Whatever Works

Woody Allen's latest film Whatever Works kicked off the Tribeca Film Festival last night. The film stars Evan Rachel Wood - who just joined the cast of True Blood - and Larry David as husband and wife, which is a bit of an unlikely duo. Mary-Kate Olsen wasn't the one making out with an older man on the big screen this time, but she was still out to support the festival and film. Debra Messing seemed ready to celebrate her new NBC pilot decked out in red, while cute Bradley Cooper kept it scruffy. The Tribeca Film Festival is officially underway with screenings, parties and red carpets all over until next weekend.
