Tin Man Premieres on Sci Fi This Weekend

This weekend, we'll get our first look at Tin Man, Sci Fi's trippy new take on The Wizard of Oz. Starring Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cumming, Richard Dreyfuss, and Kathleen Robertson, the three-night miniseries centers the classic story in a land called the Outer Zone (or OZ).

Deschanel plays DG, this version's Dorothy, a Midwestern waitress who gets suddenly thrust into another dimension. Instead of a cowardly lion and a tin man, this version has characters like Glitch (Cumming), who's missing half his brain. But it still has a wicked witch: Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson), who rules the OZ with an iron fist.

So far, reviews have been mixed - USA Today said this alterna-OZ was a bit too grim, while TV Guide appreciated its absurdity - but my TiVo's still set. I'll take my Deschanel anywhere I can find her, and I want to see what kind of special effects Sci Fi has cooked up. To watch the trailer and a clip from Sunday's first episode, just read more

Zooey Deschanel looked perfectly adorable and wonderfully pretty at the LA premiere of her new Sci Fi miniseries Tin Man in LA last night. While her character is named DG instead of Dorothy, Zooey was in the requisite ruby red shoes with a stunning red dress to match and little Toto in her arms. I've been looking forward to this series since learning about it over the summer and getting a first look, and that was before I realized how much I would miss her on Weeds this season. Zooey recently described the new take on a classic story saying, "It's postmodern, more like Indiana Jones than a fairy tale." While they had me the moment they cast quirky Zooey, I genuinely can't wait to see the first episode this Sunday.

First Look: Sci Fi's Take on "Tin Man"

This winter, Sci Fi is putting a new spin on The Wizard of Oz. The network's six-hour miniseries, "Tin Man," is a dark reimagining of the classic story set in modern times. Zooey Deschanel plays DG, a girl with a fairly boring life who is suddenly thrust into a magical realm known as the O.Z., filled with odd creatures such as Glitch (Alan Cumming), who's missing half his brain, and Raw (Raoul Trujillo), a wolverine of sorts who longs for courage.

Pop and I got the scoop on "Tin Man" over the summer, but the trailer is finally online for all to see, and I have to say, it looks pretty cool. The special effects are spellbinding even on the tiny YouTube player, and Zooey seems like just the right choice for the shell-shocked DG. Zooey Deschanel Shows Domino Her Digs

I love a woman who's serious about her creative spaces, and actress and musician Zooey Deschanel, who is featured in Domino’s upcoming February issue, is definitely after my decorating heart.

Deschanel, who graces the February issue's cover, shares one of her favorite rooms with Domino, a study that she's transformed into a creative space. The musician and actress's home style seems perfectly in line with her professional life: a combination of smart, quirky, and absolutely unique selections, much in keeping with her choices for acting roles and music collaborators. And who could be more perfect for the February issue than Deschanel, whose Valentine's Day sweetheart - fiancé Ben Gibbard, front man for Death Cab For Cutie - recently proposed to her.

Zooey Deschanel transformed the study in her home into a soundproof studio, where she could write new music for her band with M. Ward, She and Him. I love the blue-upon-blue layering of fabric, paint, and pattern, and the pops of red lend an alertness and creative fire to the room. The blue-gingham piano bench reminds me of Dorothy's dress in the Wizard of Oz, which seems appropriate since Deschanel played an updated Dorothy in Tin Man. Everything about the room seems relaxed, inspirational, and feminine, from the two-toned piano to the soothing blue shades.

PopUK Gift Guide: Lots For Little Brother

All our Sugar sites are bringing you gift ideas for those younger brothers, tween and teenage boys in your life, so I've selected a few entertainment purchases that might spark some ideas for Christmas presents!

First off I have some musically inspired gifts - if there's a big present you want to get them this year, why not go for Guitar Hero: World Tour? It's expensive but promises hours in front of the TV and you can guarantee that everyone will probably end up getting involved when they play! Guys with guitars continue the theme into the CDs that I suggest, so how about trying out the new albums from Fall Out Boy or The Killers?

To read, I have a couple of suggestions - first up is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. The title is an homage to The Jungle Book, but in Gaiman's story an orphan is adopted by the occupants of a graveyard (as opposed to the animals in a jungle) and raised by them. Next is The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, following a nine year old boy called Bruno, a powerful book for tweens and older.

Kung Fu Panda is a fun animated movie starring Jack Black and Angelina Jolie, and does exactly what it says on the tin, for teens I'd recommend Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr for a whole load of action and comedy. For a fun TV series, how about Nickelodeon show Drake & Josh, about an Odd Couple-alike pair of step-brothers and the hi-jinks they get into!

Does Your Whole Family Dress Up For Halloween?

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. Creativity and dress up allow you to be someone else for just a little while. Many parents use the spooky holiday as an excuse to dress the whole family up in one guise. I'm not sure how I feel about that concept. Perhaps being pregnant is a blessing in, errr, disguise! Would I rather be sitting at home doling out candy on my comfy couch or matching myself up to accompany a wee Dorothy by suiting up as the Wicked Witch of the West and piling recycled foil on my husband for a reprise of the Tin Man?

RIP Paul Newman

Last night the legendary screen actor and philanthropist passed away at the age of 83. Paul was surrounded by friends and family when he passed at his home in Westport, CT, after battling cancer. Few details were released by his publicist just as his illness was kept under the radar since suspicions rose earlier this year. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, actress Joanne Woodward, and their five daughters and grandchildren.

Paul was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and directed and starred in films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Road to Perdition. Paul won his first Oscar with The Color of Money as well as two additional honorary awards. He was one of the most charitable men in Hollywood with his food empire, Newman's Own, and as a co-founder of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a summer camp for seriously ill children.

As well as one of the most giving, he was also arguably the coolest man in Hollywood, who raced cars and flashed those baby blue eyes. He remained married to his longtime sweetheart for over 50 years and stayed away from the Hollywood scene. He will be greatly missed.

Zooey D Is Following the Yellow Brick Road

Who knew I would be interested in watching yet another remake of The Wizard of Oz? At NBC's TCAs, the SciFi network was allowed to crash the party with what is bound to be their biggest hit of the season, Tin Man. The adorable Zooey Deschanel will star as Dorothy in the six hour miniseries which had amazing special effects and an updated look and feel. The cast also includes Richard Dreyfuss (who was not there), Alan Cummings as the scarecrow who graciously attended via satellite - so Alan of him, and Kathleen Robertson as the wicked witch (you know, Clare Arnold from Beverly Hills 90210). This show is for someone who enjoys a great classic with a modern twist and excellent production value. Here are a few highlights from the panel:

When Zooey was asked about playing two iconic characters like Dorothy and the upcoming (if it ever really happens) Janis Joplin movie. Her response was, "Well, that's a stretch... I mean they're both women. They have brown hair."
Alan Cummings was asked, Which is the hotter babe? The Wicked Witch or Dorothy?" His response that made the filled room laugh, "It's like a psychological thing. I think Dorothy and the witch represent the good and the bad and, you know, the darkness and the light. And so actually, it would be a good thing would be to have a combo."

I really had no idea about this show until today but it's definitely worth watching out for. As for Zooey, well we will always have her recent duet.

Zooey Deschanel was a hot lady in red last night at the LA premiere of her new miniseries, Tin Man. The actress is usually non-mainstream in her fashion decisions, so it's fun to see her delving into sexy territories with her plunging red Zac Posen dress and Daniel Swarovski clutch. The burgundy pumps aren't my favorite, so I put her in something more dazzling.
