Nyet to Kenny? Russia Wants to Ban "Extremist" US Cartoon

While it's never won awards for being kinder and gentler entertainment (though it does have two Emmys) now South Park is on the run in Russia. Prosecutors are looking to ban the "extremist" cartoon after viewer complaints. Filing suit against the network showing the cartoon, the spokesman says, "South Park is just one of many cartoons that need to be banned from open broadcast . . . as it insults the feelings of religious believers and incites religious and national hatred."

The episode in question? The 1999 episode called "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics" that shows the cast singing Christmas Carols. The spokesman goes on to say, "It's one thing if they are on cable TV and viewers pay money and make a conscious choice. But young children should not be able to turn on the TV after school and watch this. They need to be defended."

In 2006, Russia passed a law extending the definition of extremism to include "the abasement of national dignity" and "inciting religious and national hatred." Does South Park do this - or is it all in good fun?

Rest In Peace, Isaac Hayes

It was a pretty depressing weekend in the world of entertainment as we lost first Bernie Mac and then Isaac Hayes. Hayes passed away on Sunday in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 65.

Many people know Hayes as the deep-voiced singer who brought the theme song to Shaft into the world. In 1972, he won the Oscar for that song, becoming the first African-American to win an Oscar in a non-acting category. Hayes went on to pick up three Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

For people of a younger generation, however, Hayes will be remembered as the voice of Chef on South Park. To enjoy a video set to Chef's "Chocolate Salty Balls" in Hayes's honor, just read more.

Soul legend (and Chef from South Park) Isaac Hayes has died at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 65. Police were called to Isaac's home when his wife found him unconscious, he was then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. – BBC

South Park Spoofs the Day the Internet Died

We've all talked about what we would do if the Internet suddenly died. Last night the unspeakable disaster hit South Park in their "It's Just Gone" episode. Of course, with no Internet, the town couldn't do the usual Google investigation to see what went wrong. What to do? What to do?! To quote Randy Marsh: "Everyone just calm down. Calm down all right! It's going to be okay, we just can't panic."

The boys produce a viral vid and want to cash in on their success, so they report to a governmental office (which doesn't exist in the real world) to collect their pay. Of course, every Internet superstah we've ever ridiculed and enjoyed is up in that joint, waiting to be compensated for the humiliation and exploitation that comes with virtual fame. Tay Zonday and his big chocolate ego won't shut up, Tron Guy won't sit down, The Dramatic Chipmunk really needs to chill, and can someone get that sneezing panda a friggin' tissue? And for the last time, shut Chris Crocker up!

If you like free stuff, and you like South Park, you will like this: South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are now streaming nearly every episode of the series online, plus clips and behind-the-scenes information. In a press release, Parker and Stone gave a typically flippant reason for the launch: "We got really sick of having to download our own show illegally all the time so we gave ourselves a legal alternative."

The site currently has 168 of the 169 episodes of South Park available. (I'm not sure which one's missing.) Because of various contract issues, new episodes will appear on the site right after they air and be available for seven days before being temporarily taken down; after 30 days, they'll be added back to the site for good. The episodes can't be embedded on other sites, but they can be shared on sites like Facebook.

There's clearly still some work to be done on the site (the episode guide feature is pretty buggy for me), but who am I to complain when there's more than a decade of South Park episodes to be watched at my leisure? Are there any old episodes you're particularly interested in checking out again?
