First Look: Single With Parents Starring Alyssa Milano

Like Castle, Alyssa Milano's Single With Parents is another of ABC's growing roster of midseason shows. This one stars Milano as Lou, a single woman in her 30s who finds herself being the dumping ground for her parents' wild behavior and irresponsibility. They seem to be the ones off living fabulous lives while she stays behind to watch after their kids or hears their stories about having sex in a helicopter.

There have been a lot of young-slackers-behaving-badly comedies over the past few years, so it's kind of refreshing to have a show in the mix where the adults are the ones acting silly. And if I were going to choose people to play parents living life with reckless abandon, I could do a whole lot worse than Beau Bridges and Annie Potts. The trailer didn't exactly win me over, though, and it felt way longer than its 100 seconds, which can't be a good thing.

There are some awkwardly funny moments here, though, so I'll be curious to see how this one develops. To check out the trailer, just read more.

ABC Picks Up Five Shows for Midseason

The Fall TV season hasn't even started yet, and already, at least one network is looking a few months ahead. ABC, which only has one new scripted show (Life on Mars) on its Fall schedule, has picked up three dramas and two comedies for midseason.

Among them: Rob Thomas's Cupid, his remake of his own 1998 show, which now stars Sarah Paulson and Bobby Cannavale (at right). I've been curious about that project for a while now, so I'm glad it's taken the next step toward becoming a series.

The other dramas:

Castle - Starring Nathan Fillion, the show focuses on a horror novelist who helps the NYPD solve crimes.
The Unusuals - Starring Amber Tamblyn, this one's described as an "ensemble dramedy" set in a police precinct.

ABC's midseason comedies are:

Better Off Ted - Jay Harrington stars as a moral man trying to do the right thing in this office-set show.
Single with Parents - This comedy from How I Met Your Mother producer Kristin Newman stars Alyssa Milano as a woman juggling a dysfunctional family.

ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson hinted to the Hollywood Reporter that some of ABC's other pilots might be getting the go-ahead later on. The network still has Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas starring Janel Moloney and Rob Thomas's other pilot, Good Behavior, as well as the Alicia Silverstone/Alia Shawkat comedy Bad Mother's Handbook, as possibilities.

Magical as they are, the first few weeks of parenting are no cake walk. They are wonderful and full of life changing moments but the shift from couplehood to parent life is drastic and a never-ending learning process. For many moms and dads, the addition of a new family member takes a toll on the romance, making it tough to maintain the closeness in the relationship. Others are finding quite the opposite effect. And by others, I mean married parents. According to a new study, children boost happiness for married parents. Unmarried parents? They don't fare as well. The research found:

Single, separated, and cohabiting people, by contrast, report negative experiences.

Evidence suggests that couples who are married are "ready" to have children where those who are not, may not have been prepared for the lifestyle change. Are you and your partner happier since becoming parents? And, are you married?

More Teens Getting Pregnant; Who They Are May Surprise You

We often hear media stories about teenagers from poor and single-parent homes getting pregnant.

Research conducted for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, however, concludes that only 28 percent of people who reported giving birth or fathering children as teens lived in families with incomes below the federal poverty line, and only 30 percent said they were living with a single parent.

Although teens from poor families headed by single mothers are disproportionately likely to become teen mothers, "teen pregnancy is not limited to a particular racial group or socio-economic status or a particular family structure," says Bill Albert, chief program officer for the National Campaign.

In other words, parents and schools need to be vigilant about teaching teens either to abstain from sex or to have safe sex - even upper-middle-class teens. After 15 years of a decline in teen pregnancy, the number of teens giving birth has gone up in the last couple years. The reason? More sex and less contraception, says Albert, especially because teen boys are less concerned about contracting HIV.

Britney Spears carried Jayden James out after dinner with both her sons in Calabasas on Friday night. Last week it was their dad Kevin Federline who brought SP and JJ to visit the pumpkin patch before Halloween as they evenly divide their time with both their parents. In the past Britney hit up some of the big costume parties in Hollywood, but so far it looks like the family laid low perhaps with some local trick-or-treating. While we love seeing her mom time, Brit's sexy new video for "3" shows that she's still got it as she gears up for a month of shows in Australia and the release of her singles album just in time for holiday shopping.

Help a Single Mama Out - Be That Woman!

No doubt about it - parenting is the toughest job... period. The only thing that could make it harder is the prospect of being a single mom holding down a job in a tough economy. Mums who are running the show on their lonesome are admirable and strong and though they may not say it out loud, they can often use a helping hand. This small stick figured animated clip, which was shown at the Washington Area Women's Foundation annual leadership luncheon, serves as a good reminder that it takes a village to raise a child, which results in a happy mother.

Motherhood: A Harried-Mom Tale That Often Feels Tired

When you have a parenting movie set in New York, you should know better than to expect a warm-'n'-fuzzy story about the joys of having kids. In fact, Motherhood is out to prove that mothers have it rough.

The film follows Eliza Welsh (Uma Thurman), a Manhattan writer dealing with a cramped apartment, busy husband, and side-street parking while raising her two kids. A day in her life feels like a really, really long 24 hours. Eliza runs around frantically trying to prepare for her 6-year-old's birthday while composing an essay for a parenting magazine contest and squeezing in a sample sale with her mommy friend Sheila (Minnie Driver). We know that Eliza was once a great writer, but when she had kids, she decided to give up her job to raise her family. Now, she's a shell of her former self in frumpy clothes and messy hair. Simply put, Eliza is dealing with the classic parent conundrum: how do you care for your kids and still retain something for yourself? The answer? It ain't easy.

Eliza doesn't try to feign martyrdom. In fact, she often whines about her plight in a way that screams, "I'm angry, dammit!" And at first, you're angry for her too. (No woman deserves to put up with all that she does.) But as the film goes on, Eliza's bitterness knocks you over the head, and you have to you wonder - is she like this every day? Yeesh.

Luckily we have Eliza's friend Sheila for some needed comic relief. Sheila is the cool single mom to the more neurotic Eliza - she mouths off cheeky one-liners and uses her son's motorized bath toy for her "alone time." Jodie Foster also delivers a hilarious cameo as a celebrity mom swearing at the paparazzi on the playground - aka, herself. Both women keep Eliza's "what-can-go-wrong-will-go-wrong" storyline from wearing too thin.

Mothers will probably identify with either Eliza or Sheila but what about the rest of us? While the actors perform well and the movie provides laughs for those who can relate (read: parents), most of the jokes don't feel fresh, and you've probably seen similar setups on shows like The Middle or In the Motherhood or any of the other dozens of family comedies in recent years. Props to the filmmakers for giving mothers their due, but if you're not one yourself, an hour and a half with Eliza may be enough to make you rush out of the theater and buy birth control.

Tell Mommy: What Do Moms Do That Dads Don't Do?

In Motherhood, which comes out today, Uma Thurman plays Eliza, a Manhattan stay-at-home mom of two who is planning her daughter's sixth birthday party while trying to finish a parenting magazine contest entry on the topic "What does motherhood mean to you?" Small potatoes, right? The film takes place in one day, examining Eliza's cluttered life - the early morning rush of getting the kids ready, the dog, the apartments (she and her husband have set up shop in a bohemian one bedroom and studio), inability to do it all despite the pressure to be perfect, and quest to make it all mean something.

The film, which BuzzSugar has a review of, was ripe with "been there" mommy moments, but it was a bittersweet quote from Eliza's daughter that brought a single sappy tear and smile to my face.

"Moms do everything, dads only do some things. It's different."

We all have our fair share of mom FAIL moments, and it takes effort to remain content with our choices and sacrifices, but sometimes it's the unintentional, unbiased recognition from a child that reminds us how wonderful motherhood is and how appreciated we are as mothers whether our children know how to verbalize it or not. So be honest and pat yourself on the back here: Is there something you do - or provide - as a mother that their father doesn't do?

More Single Parents Finding Love Online

According to the New York Times, an increased amount of single parents are using online dating as a means to meet new people.
