Beyonce, Lady Gaga Dominate the 2009 VMA Nominations

The video that launched a thousand YouTube copycat videos, Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" is, of course, all over the list of 2009 MTV Video Music Award nominations. Beyonce's got a bit of competition, however, in Lady Gaga, who ties her for the most nominations this year (they each earned nine nods). Beyonce said she is "excited and honored" to be tied with Lady Gaga, and that she's "spent so much time watching all the great versions [of 'Single Ladies'] people created all around the world. It's beautiful to feel you touch people and bring a song to life with a video."

As for the men, Kanye and Eminem have nominations aplenty, though it looks like Coldplay's video for "Viva La Vida" and Green Day's "21 Guns" will also be recognized. You can now vote for your favorite nominees here, and tune in Sept. 13 when Russell Brand hosts the VMAs for a second consecutive year. To check out a full list of nominees, read more.

MTV Video Music Awards: Who's Missing From the Nominations

The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards are coming our way once again, and as I skimmed the nominees for this year, I started to feel perplexed. Some of the nominees are totally appropriate, but others make me scratch my head, and I could think of other videos from this year that are far more deserving.

Maybe it's a sign of the times, but did you know that there used to be categories for awards like Best Post-Modern Video and Best Concept Video? I feel like they used to at least acknowledge groundbreaking work in music videos, but because of the decreasing airtime for videos on MTV, maybe there just isn't a need anymore? I'm not sure, but I do know that there are some videos I would add to the mix on Sept. 7 if I could.

Best Female Video: MTV's nominees include Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" which is definitely funny, and Rihanna's "Take A Bow." But maybe instead of Jordan Sparks's video for "No Air" I'd throw in Feist's video for "I Feel It All" and Solange Knowles's "I Decided." Solange's costumes and visuals are so awesome, and how can you resist Feist?

Best Male Video: It's hard to argue with most of MTV's picks, especially Usher's "Love in This Club" (touch of sarcasm there), but I would add Andrew Bird's video for his song "Lull". It's a lovely and unique animated piece that deserves some love.

Best Hip Hop Video: I'm glad MTV included Kanye West and Chris Martin's video collaboration for the song "Homecoming" in the list of nominees because it's a gorgeous shout-out to Chicago. I think another Kanye collaboration deserves to be in there, though: Estelle's video for "American Boy."

Best Pop Video: I'm not going to argue with Jonas Brothers or Danity Kane or Britney Spears because, you know, whatever. But wouldn't it be hilarious if Robin Sparkles made it in there?

Best New Artist: Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Jordan Sparks - but no Vampire Weekend?! They're having as big a year as it gets for a band. They're even apparently making America cool again, for Pete's sake, and still no love from MTV. Well, I would like to officially note that I think they deserve a nod for "Oxford Comma." Also, that first She & Him video where Zoe's head explodes is awesome and they're the best new artists in my heart.

Best Rock Video: I don't know if Death Cab For Cutie falls into the same category as groups like Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, and Linkin Park but I think their video for "I Will Possess Your Heart" is great and deserves some attention.

MTV Video Music Awards: Lauren Conrad

Lauren may have retired from The Hills, but she's certainly still a presence on the red carpet. For the VMAs, she ditched her extensions and went with a 1930s-inspired style held back with a sweet hair clip. Her makeup was all whisper pinks, from eyes to cheeks and lips. She definitely doesn't look overdone the way some celebrities do on the red carpet, but do you think her soft pastels were right for the VMAs - or should they have stayed in Malibu?

MTV Video Music Awards: Nelly Furtado

Come to think of it, we haven't seen a whole lot of updos this evening, so this slicked-back 'do on Nelly Furtado is rather refreshing. Ever since her breakthrough song "I'm Like a Bird" came out in 2000, I've had my eye on the exotic-looking singer. Perhaps you might recall her blonder than blond look from the 2007 VMAs that most of you were not digging? Tonight, the songstress goes for a more refined style, her dark brown locks pulled back into a classic twist, accentuating her delicate features. What do you think of her 2009 look, complete with smoky gray eyes and matte lips? Is it a bit too prim and proper for your liking or does she say it right?

MTV Video Music Awards: Jennifer Lopez

The divine Ms. Lopez took a night off from caring for twin bebehs Max and Emme to shine her divalicious light on the VMAs. And I do mean shine - she was glowing all the way down the red carpet. Her look was minimalist, but still sexy: a bare face with lots of luminizer for that heavenly glow, and slick hair that made her skin and amazing eyelashes stand out even more. The orange-gold lip was unusual, but I think it worked for her. What do you think? Does this look serve Jennifer well, or would you like to see more hair and makeup on her?

MTV Video Music Awards: Madonna

Queen Madge isn't one to be off trend, and tonight was no exception. I love her pulled-back pouf - it reminds me of Catherine Deneuve's hair in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Unlike a lot of red carpet denizens, though, she kept her eyes sexy, with a classic Cleopatra line past the outer edges. Her peachy pink lip color was also the perfect shade for rosy, pale girls who have a hard time with the nude lip trend.

Alicia Keys always looks ineffably cool. Like so many other celebrities, she opted for a big, bold updo. Instead of the white eye shadow we've been seeing all over the red carpet tonight, though, she went for a flattering gunmetal-gray and silver combination that's less harsh than straight-out white. A little blush and a neutral pink lip kept her from looking washed out. What do you think? Is this look a symphony of subtle shades, or an off-note?

Of the young Hollywood crowd, I've always thought of Leighton Meester as one of the more sophisticated of the bunch. Perhaps it's because she usually stuns with a grown-up wardrobe and sexy makeup palette that's not too over-the-top. But tonight, has the lovely Leighton gone a bit more Dynasty with her big hair and lots of liner? And for some reason, her pout looks a little more pouty than normal, no? Anyone else getting an Ashlee Simpson meets Alicia Silverstone kind of vibe? Tell us what you think. MTV Video Music Awards: Cassie

Back in July, we saw Cassie with etches on the shaved side of this disconnected haircut, but tonight she's keeping that side soft and smooth, letting the longer part stand out with a little curl and some rolled texture. While it might seem like she doesn't have a whole lot of options with this distinctive cut, as evidenced by tonight's look, she most certainly does. Someone give kudos to Cassie's stylist for creating two looks in one. As for the makeup, it's all about the smoky eye and pink glossed lips. Are you a fan of Cassie's funky short and long twisted style or are you more of a traditional gal?
