A Mamma Mia Sequel: Brilliant or Baffling?

Could Meryl Streep, Coiln Firth, and Pierce Brosnan be warming up their vocal cords for a Mamma Mia sequel? That's what recent quotes from stars of last Summer's hit makes it sound like. Amanda Seyfried said the very nebulous, "I've been talking to some insiders and it's not something that they haven't been working on."

It's not a huge shocker that sequel-happy Hollywood would want a follow-up to the massively successful musical, and I'd certainly be in line for a ticket if it came to theaters. I know in general some fans will be crying foul anyway over a sequel, but what's your opinion on it?

Girl Crush du Jour: Amanda Seyfried

There are many reasons I'm psyched to see Jennifer's Body, the horror-comedy flick out in September. First of all, a horror comedy? Yes, please. Secondly, the trailer hints at signature campy Diablo Cody dialogue some of us have come to love. ("You kill people!" "No, I just kill boys.")

But one of the main reasons I can't wait to see it is that I adore Amanda Seyfried. She was great in Mean Girls, shined in Mamma Mia!, and I bet will be hilarious as the nerdy girl who is befriended by bad girl/boy killer played by Megan Fox. Talented, cute, and funny - with just a touch of vulnerability. What's there not to like?

Dominic and Amanda Sitting in a Cab...

It seems to be a case of life imitating art for Mamma Mia stars Dominic Cooper and Amanda Seyfried, who left London club Mahiki in a cab together last night. According to The Daily Mail, a fellow clubgoer said: "They were kissing and holding hands, and being very tactile with each other". Both were in relationships during filming in 2007, but in an interview last June Amanda admitted she "felt something in [her] heart" for Dominic and ended her relationship. Dominic and his partner ended their 12 year relationship last September, which Dominic said was because he'd "spent too many hours concentrating on [his] career. It's very tough on a relationship". Dominic looks very happy with his personal life, and his professional life is soaring too, with his return to the London stage, opposite Helen Mirren in Phedre, scheduled for June.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia is a lot of things: fun, sparkly, full of handsome middle-aged men, kind of a hilarious hot mess, etc. It's also now a Golden Globe nominee, which is not something I would have imagined possible for this movie but there you have it! Still, a lot of people will be excited to add this one to their Netflix queues (or to receive it as a gift) to sing along and dance to in the privacy of their own homes (I'm looking at you, Mom).

The special features are totally what you would expect to accompany this musical on DVD. They include - what else? - a sing-along that includes onscreen lyrics for 22 musical numbers, as well as a deleted musical number titled "The Name of the Game." There's also commentary from director Phyllida Lloyd, a featurette on the making of the movie, and some deleted scenes and outtakes.

The House Bunny
Anna Faris is one of the most endearing young comedic actresses these days which is why I was more or less on board for The House Bunny. The movie follows Playboy bunny Shelley (Faris) who has been kicked out of the Playboy mansion after her 27th birthday and finds herself moving in as house mother for the "misfit girls" at the Zeta Alpha Zeta sorority house. The girls need to recruit more ladies to their house and they turn to Shelley to help them improve their reputation. The whole thing is super formulaic and nothing to write home about but there are moments that made me giggle and Faris is really entertaining in this role.

Special features include deleted scenes, a featurette about the love interest in the film (played by Colin Hanks) and another one titled "From Song to Set: Katherine McPhee."

Generation Kill
If you didn't catch this HBO gem when it aired this year, I highly recommend making the time to do so now that it's out on DVD (in fact, it may be easier to watch back-to-back rather than waiting a whole week to see what happens next). The seven-episode miniseries from The Wire's David Simon and Ed Burns delivers everything you'd expect from a Simon/Burns project. Based on a book by journalist Evan Wright, the series is a gritty and realistic portrayal of the Iraq War. The cast is also awesome and includes Alexander Skarsgård (currently starring on True Blood), James Ransone, Stark Sands and Jon Huertas.

Special features include a featurette titled "Generation Kill: A Conversation With the 1st Recon Marines," and deleted dialogues.

Sugar Bits - Kate Winslet Nominated For Two Golden Globes!

Homegrown talent Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes have both earned two nominations each for Golden Globes. The ceremony takes place on January 11, and Brits Dame Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Kate's husband Sam Mendes, Stephen Daldry and Danny Boyle are also nominated. Meryl Streep has two nominations in the Best Actress category for Doubt and Mamma Mia, and the late Heath Ledger is also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight. - BBC
Simon Cowell has said he's "very embarassed", after the contracts for this year's The X Factor contestants were leaked yesterday. It includes a clause that states they may not say anything nasty about Simon, which he laughed at, saying "I wasn't aware I was one of the clauses. You can't be horrible about me? That's probably the most useless clause in the history of contracts, because everybody does talk horribly about me, and you know what? I don't care. It sounds ridiculously hypocritical for me to slate loads of people who come on the show and then say, 'You have to be nice about Simon.'" - Telegraph
Mark Owen and Howard Donald both remained positive yet mysterious about the chances of a Take That reunion with Robbie Williams as they performed at the Royal Variety Show last night, with Howard saying, "Everyone loves a chance to remininsce." - PA

Pop A DVD In: Mamma Mia!

It's starting to get really cold now, so thank goodness for the DVD release of Mamma Mia! this week. One of the massive box office hits of the summer, the film based on the stage musical will bring some welcome sunshine and laughter into your living room.

Meryl Streep is on wonderful all-singing all-dancing form as Donna, a single mum with a run-down hotel on an idyllic Greek island. Amanda Seyfried shows off her awesome singing voice as Donna's daughter, Sophie, who wants her father to be at her wedding to Sky (played by a gorgeous, and topless, Dominic Cooper). The hitch is Sophie doesn't know who her dad is, so she invites all three (Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgård).

Throw in lots of ABBA songs and you've got yourself a fun, silly, charming film. The all-star cast are one of the biggest draws (alongside the gorgeous Sporades setting), with Julie Walters and Christine Baranski on brilliant form as Donna's best friends. The film pretty much manages to pull off a bizarre blend of knowing irony and heartfelt sincerity, but it is a strange mix that won't appeal to everyone.

I got to meet the male and female stars of the film, and it was clear how much they enjoyed making the movie when they told me all about the singing and dancing. Check out my review of the cinema release to find out more and see movie stills.

Mamma Mia! is breaking records left, right and centre: having become the biggest grossing British film of all time at the UK box office, it has now become the UK's fastest-selling DVD, with 1.669 million copies sold on the first day of sale on Monday. I'd recommend you join the millions of viewers who've already enjoyed the ride, and grab a slice of summery silliness to brighten up these cold winter days.

Sugar Bits - Mark Owen Welcomes Willow Rose

Mark Owen became a father for the second time yesterday when his partner, Emma Ferguson, gave birth to a girl, who they have named Willow Rose Owen. Willow joins big brother Elwood. A spokesman for Take That said: "Mark, Emma and Elwood are thrilled. Mum and daughter are very healthy and happy". Congratulations to the growing family! - BBC

Buzz Gift Guide: Yo Mamma!

Is it November already? Yup! And that means it's time to get going on holiday shopping. So, welcome to this year's round of Buzz Gift Guides for all the entertainment lovers in your life. Starting us off: Gift ideas for your mom.

I've often had a tough time shopping for mom, usually because her stuff tends be nicer than mine in general. But if your mom has a weak spot for entertainment, today's holiday gift guide might provide you with some fun suggestions.

OK, my mother loved Mamma Mia! when it came out in theaters. The gift of Meryl will keep on giving come Dec. 16 when the DVD hits stores. If your mom boogied down to this with friends in the theater, I bet she'd love it if you were thoughtful enough to pre-order it just in time for the holidays.

I stumbled upon Cinematherapy Goes to the Oscars recently and for moms that consider themselves movie buffs, this little book is a great companion, full of thought-provoking insights into Academy Award-winning movies. Many of the women in my life are fans of author Jodi Picoult and her latest book, Change of Heart, will be released in paperback on Dec. 2 (or you can get it now in hardcover).

One of my mom's absolute can't-miss TV shows is Brothers and Sisters (especially because of "that Sally Field character"), and just this Fall the second season of the show was released on DVD. And finally, for the lady who loves a little romance in her life, check out A&E's Literary Classics: Romance DVD Collection Two. The movies star folks like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Paul Rudd in movies like The Great Gatsby and Vanity Fair.

David Tennant is to stand down as Doctor Who, and will leave the role after four special episodes are broadcast next year. He made the announcement after winning the outstanding drama performance prize at the National Television Awards. - BBC
Following Russell Brand's resignation, the BBC's director general is to meet the corporation's governing body to discuss Russell and Jonathan's prank on Andrew Sachs, which has now received 27,000 complaints. Ofcom has launched its own investigation. - BBC

Television presenter Ben Fogle is seriously ill after he was bitten by a flesh-eating bug while filming a programme for BBC2 in the South American jungle.
