Would You Live in a Hobbit House?

Apparently, Hobbit houses aren't big sellers. Developer Ron Meyers's housing development, "The Shire," which is located in Bend, Oregon, has only sold one home since the project began nearly two years ago. And granted, I am a Lord of the Rings dork, but even if I weren't I'd still find these houses pretty cute. Would you want to live in such a fanciful home?

10 Books That Are Better as Movies

It's a strange experience when you realize you're enjoying a movie more than you enjoyed the book on which it's based because so often the opposite is true. After all, presumably an author has the advantage because he/she can provide deep insight into characters that actors have to convey with but a glance. Sean Bean Finally Gets Married ... to Wife Number Four

Sean Bean fans, prepare yourselves for heartache ... the Lord of the Rings actor finally married his 29-year-old girlfriend Georgina Sutcliffe at London's Marylebone Registry Office today. This wedding follows fast on the heels of last Thursday's ceremony at the register office in Westminster, when Nicole Appleton got Liam Gallagher down the aisle at last. Sean and Georgina were due to get married last month, but they mysteriously cancelled the ceremony at the last minute because of "personal issues". I'm glad to see that they've sorted out whatever was up - they smiled wide as they posed for pictures with Sean's daughters. The 48-year-old Sharpe star has been married three times before, so let's hope this one's for keeps.

Peter Jackson to Produce - But Not Direct - The Hobbit

The long-held disagreements between Peter Jackson and his Lord of the Rings studio New Line are being put aside as the two parties discuss their future collaboration on The Hobbit prequels to the Lord of the Rings. Jackson has agreed to serve as executive producer on the Hobbit films - but he will not direct.

There will be not one, but two prequel films shot simultaneously - similar to how the Lord of the Rings films were done. One will release in 2010 with the second one following up in 2011.

Jackson seems quite content with this arrangement, stating "I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth." No word on possible directors, though Peter Weir and Sam Raimi have been oft-rumored names in connection with the project.

What do you think about this news? Could this continued "journey through Middle Earth" be as good without Peter Jackson?

What's Buzzworthy? Movies With Great Costumes

As we ease into October I've been thinking a lot about Halloween and the idea of costuming and masquerade. Many people gain inspiration for Halloween costumes from the clothing they find in movies. For this week's Buzzworthy challenge, let's take a look at those movies that feature some of the best costumes ever. They can be Oscar winners, like Amadeus or Lord of the Rings, or just movies where you admired the costumes, like Elizabeth or even Clueless.

TV Dinners: Lord of the Rings - Lembas Bread

According to my gal geeksugar, tomorrow is Hobbit Day. When I think of Hobbits - the heroes from "Lord of the Rings" - I think about folks with insatiable appetites, the kind of folks who need eleven meals a day in order to survive. Or, the kind of folks who could eat several pieces of elvish waybread - something a normal man only needs one bite of - in one sitting.

If all of this Hobbit talk has gotten too geeky for you, let me translate by saying: Elvish waybread is something that Tolkien made up, but according to his hints, it is a thin honey bread that is darker on the outside than on the inside - sort of like a honeyed griddle cake with a hint of citrus.

Now you might not care for hobbits or elves, but citrus honey griddle cake?? How could you not love it? You know you need the recipe!

And if you do care for hobbits, someone has spliced together different movie clips and created an ad for Lembas bread.

Lembas Bread

3 eggs
1 cup honey (preferably wild honey)
1 tablespoon grated orange peel or three kumquats or one large finger from a budda hand fruit
2 teaspoons orange flower water (optional)
3 oz blanched almonds
1/4 cup melted butter
2 1/4 cups semolina flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Place eggs, honey, orange peel or other fruit, orange flower water, and almonds in blender.
Blend on high for 3 minutes.
Add 1 cup of the flour. Blend for 1 minute.
Scrape into a bowl and add remaining flour and salt.
Whisk or stir until well blended.
Bake lembas on a pizzelle or krumkake iron 15 seconds each or until lightly brown. You may substitute a waffle iron but add a teaspoon of baking powder. The texture will not be quite accurate in a waffle iron.

Note: You can also try the batter directly on a griddle.

The Vampire Diaries "The Turning Point": The Good, The Bad and The Bloody

I was already bummed knowing this was the last week of new episodes of The Vampire Diaries until January; and now, having seen it, I'm freaking out a little bit. I knew there was going to be an epic cliffhanger, I just didn't know how epic!

With new vampires, violence and passion come "The Turning Point" - a title that would apply to many things that happened this week. So as usual, let's break down the good, the bad, and the bloody of this week (plenty of spoilers ahead!) when you read more.

The Good

Stefan and Elena finally gave up on their "are we or aren't we" dance and got together. I mean, together together. Vampire boots were knocked, but there wasn't a happy ending. More on that later.
Logan's vampiric turn made for gruesome excitement, especially now that Damon is trying to be on his best behavior. It also brought forth new mysteries; why did Sheriff Forbes bury Logan and write emails on his behalf instead of saying it was an animal attack? And who did turn him? My money was on Alaric, but now I'm not so sure. I also enjoyed his interactions with Damon, despite their constant shooting of wood bullets at each other.
OK, fine: I do like Caroline and Matt together now. Their coupling is just kind of sweet, and the fact that they bonded over So You Think You Can Dance?! I felt like it was my birthday.
I'm a fan of cool guy teacher Alaric, even if he is probably a vampire. I like to think he's more exciting than that - could he be a good vampire like Stefan? Interestingly, I don't think that Stefan or Damon has actually interfaced with Alaric yet, which is telling to me. If I had to guess, I'd say they knew each other. And what of him also being a "daywalker," when Stefan and Damon are so secretive about their rings?
I need to know more about the Gilbert family legacy, especially since Jeremy discovered an ancestor who wrote fiction about monsters. I like that the show made me care about more side characters I hadn't previously, like Jenna, Jeremy, and even Tyler. About Tyler. . . I don't want to speak too soon, but I think there's something very interesting happening with him.

The Bad

Isn't it a little too early to be saying "I love you," Elena? She even wants to see and make out with his scary vampire face when he gets turned on. Weeeird.

The Bloody

Newborn Logan is literally out for blood, but that pile of hoarded bodies that Logan was keeping made me sick to my stomach.
Anyone else feeling sorry for Caroline? Girlfriend's always getting bloodied up. Someone give her a self-defense lesson.
So basically unless you're Stefan or Damon, if you're a vampire you will only last one episode before being staked. Logan gets staked by Alaric by the end of the hour, which is unfortunate for Damon, because Logan had just promised him there was another way to break the spell holding Katherine and the other vampires under Fell's Church. Guess we'll just have to wait to meet little Miss Vixen.
It might have been time for Stefan to hide the Katherine photo, or at least have come clean about their resemblance. Lord knows finding a photo of my doppelganger at my undead boyfriend's house would freak me out too. That's what happens for Elena, who leaves Stefan's in a devastated rush. When someone stands in front of her car, she has a gnarly crash, which is terrifying in itself. It gets much more horrifying when the "person" she hit uncracks their limbs to stand up and come toward her. Yeesh! (BTW, did that scene remind anyone of Tara in the first season finale of True Blood?)

I don't know how I'm going to deal with the show's hiatus for two long months, let alone waiting that long to find out what was coming for Elena. Or, who Alaric is; did he kill Logan to protect Jenna, eliminate a problem-causing newborn, or something more insidious?
