Pop A DVD In: Juno

One of my favourite recent movies – Juno – is released on DVD on Monday, and I'm super-happy I can add it to my collection.

If you didn't catch it at the cinema, it's a warm-hearted film centered on 16 year old Juno Macduff (Ellen Page). She's an uber-hip girl who finds herself pregnant after sleeping with her best friend Bleeker (Michael Cera) and decides to give her baby up for adoption to a perfect couple.

The characters are awesome and adorable, the soundtrack is fab, Allison Janney and JK Simmons play Juno's parents (surely a nominee for best on-screen parents ever?) and the film made me laugh and cry. My girl Buzz totally agrees, and gives more details, for those who haven't seen it.

Ellen Page was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the film, and Diablo Cody won for her original screenplay. As a side note, Diablo's book Candy Girl – about her time stripping – is a really interesting and funny read.

But back to the movie – I'd highly recommend you either rent or buy the movie when it comes out on Monday. There's a whole bunch of fun featurettes, screen tests, a commentary by Director Jason Reitman and Diablo, deleted scenes, gag reels, and a fun cast and crew jam! Oscar Worthy Gadgets: Juno's Hamburger Phone

"Can you hold on for a second? I'm on my hamburger phone. It's just like really awkward to talk on."

I'm beyond excited that Juno got nominated for so many Oscars, including Best Picture, because it was one of my favorite movies of 2007. The awesome music, the whip-smart dialogue, and the hipster-geek coupling of Michael Cera and Ellen Page? Perfect. And we all know what was my favorite part of the movie, and it must have been yours too because I've seen it brought up in comments, and all over Buzz and Yum: Juno's hamburger phone!

Not only is it a hilarious-looking phone, I think it mirrors Juno's characterization at that part of her life: Quirky, fun, and unexpected. Juno may not be a high-tech geek, but she's a geek nonetheless and I loved her for that. I heard that Diablo Cody actually had a hamburger phone when she was younger, and wrote it into the script. Lil Big Screen: Juno Wins an Award in My Book

I finally went to see the Golden Globe nominated movie Juno this weekend. Before entering the theater, I knew three things; it was a comedy with a great cast and the main character was a pregnant teenager.

Not only did I love the movie, but also the cast was outstanding. Break through actress Ellen Page made me fall in love with her character. I am bummed that the film didn't win Best Picture, but I didn't see all the movies that were nominated. To see more about my Junotastic experience, read more.

The film was comedic genius. My husband and I already want to see it again as we missed some dialogue due to the entire audience roaring in laughter. But at times we also had tears in our eyes and fluttering hearts.

I hadn't realized that adoption would be a focus in the film and loved how they handled the topic of teenage pregnancy. While Juno's parents were shocked and appalled at her becoming pregnant, as many would be, they were also supportive. And casting the adoptive mother, Jennifer Garner, in the light they did was especially endearing to me. Since I don't want to spoil the movie for you, I will just say that it made me proud to be a mother.

Leaving the film, I wondered how many kids would be able to do what Juno did. Some may say her decision was brave and others would argue it was stupid, but it made me wish that every unplanned pregnancy had a happy ending. Sadly, I know it was just a movie, but can't help but hope life would imitate art.

Five For Feist At Juno Awards

One of my favourite singers, Feist, picked up five awards at the Juno Music Awards in Canada this weekend. She wrote her acceptance speech on her arm, and it turned out she had a lot of chances to say thank you – her catchy single "1234" won best song, and she also picked up gongs in the Album, Artist, Songwriter and Pop Album categories.

Meanwhile Emily Blunt's other half Michael Bublé picked up the fan choice award, and Avril Lavigne also showed up to perform at the event. Did you know Leslie Feist used to live with fellow tunesmith Peaches? Oh, to have been a fly on the wall in that apartment!

Dear's Advice For Juno

For those of you who didn't see the 2008 Oscar nominated movie Juno, I'm sure you've at least heard the plot. Though she seems to have it completely together in terms of the decisions around her pregnancy, she isn't quite as sure of herself when it comes to her love life. I decided to offer up some of my own advice for Juno, who's had an up and down friendship with her baby's daddy that comes to a head in the scene below. Dear's Advice: Juno, with everything that you've been dealing with, it's really no wonder that some of the stress is taking its toll on your relationships. You and this guy have an incredibly complicated relationship, so it's hard to tell where the boundaries are. However, you did tell him that you didn't want to be with him, which probably seemed like permission for him to date other girls. Seeing as how you are expecting his child, it does make it less appropriate for him to move on so quickly, so I can't blame you for feeling abandoned.

Obviously you've got some more-than-friends feelings for him, and I think you should come clean. Tell him that you're sorry for getting so upset, but you did it because you were jealous and hurt. In fact, you should demand that he take you to prom pregnant and all, like a peaceful antiprom protest or plan something for that night that you guys used to do to get things back on the right foot. It's really admirable that you're being so tough, but don't let your stubborn disposition get the best of you.

Chomp Down on Juno's Hamburger Phone

Last weekend, I finally saw the Oscar-nominated Juno - be sure to fill out your Oscar ballot for a chance to win a prize! - and, as Buzz has mentioned it's an endearing film about a pregnant teenage gal. So why I am mentioning it here on YumSugar? Well, if you've seen the film, you know it's full of junk-food, school buffets, blue slushees, and orange tic tacs. Yet the largest food draw - at least in my opinion - isn't actually edible. It's Juno's hamburger phone - an awkward, yet delectable, hamburger-shaped communication device.

The hamburger phone sells for $15.99, although they are apparently flying off of the virtual eBay shelves for up to $56. That's quite a bit for a plastic hamburger - you could get 50 of them at McD's for that price! I wonder how it tastes in comparison . . .

Ellen Goes It Alone to Show Off Her Juno

Ellen Page held down the court for all her costars at a screening of Juno in NYC last night. Even without Garner, Bateman or Cera, hopefully, Ellen got her celebration on - Juno was nominated for three Golden Globes, including Best Actress for Ellen herself. It must be quite a surreal experience for the up-and-comer, but it seems like she's got a pretty great head on her shoulders to manage her new found fame. I can't wait to check out Juno for myself this weekend, and if you're on the fence about it check out Buzz's rave review. Anything that can be compared to a newborn puppy sounds good to me.

A Juno Video Game? I'm Still in Shock

Lately, the tide has been turning in the world of gaming, with the market opening up to new people who may not have played before. Thanks, in part to the popularity of the Wii, tons of titles are hitting the shelves aimed at the "casual gamer" who may not dig Rainbow Six Vegas, but who likes spending quality time getting healthy with Wii Sports or even taking a few hours learning about sea life from Endless Ocean.

But with recent rumors of a video game based on the sleeper big screen hit Juno, the news did leave me a bit dumbfounded. At the D.I.C.E Summit, in Las Vegas "intellectual-property migration specialist" (real title, no lie) Keith Boesky said that "people are making a game based on Juno just to cater to the (casual) market."

Although absolutely zero information has been released since then, it does leave one wondering what the heck the game will be about. The pains of childbirth? Any guesses?

Garner's One Night Off Broadway Works Juno

The quirky cast of Juno and their friends came out last night for the Hollywood premiere of their movie. Jennifer Garner really took advantage of her night off Broadway by jetting to LA to to get glam and strike a pose with her costars. She and award-winning Ellen Page looked fab in their cute strapless dresses while Jason Bateman looked polished in his button down. Superbad's Michael Cera wore a tie but kept it casual with his coat on and Rainn Wilson buddied up with David Denman from The Office. Megan Fox also went casual but still manages to sex up the red carpet no matter what she does. Allison Janney also sparkled in her Winter-white suit. The indie flick opens tomorrow and Buzz had a chance to check it out so be sure to come back later to read her review. From what we can tell so far, this flick is definitely on our must-see list.

Jen Joins Juno

Jennifer Garner has been much happier playing mommy these days, but she is coming to the big screen soon, and she just announced another new project! Garner signed on to join the cast of Juno. Jennifer will play a woman who wants to adopt a child since she can't have kids herself. Apparently it's a coming of age comedy that begins shooting in Vancouver next month. We have a feeling Violet will be headed up north as well.
