Box Office: The Game Plan Lands No. 1 Place

In a surprising turn of events - even for people behind the movie itself - The Game Plan, a PG-rated family-friendly flick starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, came in at No. 1 at the box office this weekend. The Disney movie far outpaced the action-war film The Kingdom, which took in $17.7 million and the No. 2 spot. Variety speculates whether The Kingdom's weak opening is an indication of audiences' reluctance "to see films addressing the consequences of the war on terror."

Favorites from last weekend held over: Resident Evil 3: Extinction came in third place with Good Luck Chuck following it at No. 4. 3:10 to Yuma continued to hold its own in its fourth weekend, coming in at No. 5. Feast of Love didn't even make it into the top ten and brought home a slim $1.7 million.

This weekend we'll see if Ben Stiller and Co. will be breaking any hearts at the box office with The Heartbreak Kid.

Resident Evil Takes Up Residence as No. 1 at Box Office

In a slightly surprising turn of events, the third Resident Evil movie, Resident Evil: Extinction, took the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, beating out Good Luck Chuck by quite a bit. Still, Chuck did manage to make $14 million over its first weekend and came in second place. The Brave One continues to do well, holding steady at No. 3, followed by 3:10 to Yuma in fourth place and Eastern Promises rounding out the top five movies of the weekend.

Sydney White, bringing in the younger crowds, came in at No. 6 with just over $5 million. Mr. Woodcock followed behind with Superbad, The Bourne Ultimatum and Dragon Wars completing the top ten. This coming weekend we'll see if love beats evil when Feast of Love opens nationwide.

Good Luck Chuck: Cheap Jokes and Gross Comedy

I went into Good Luck Chuck with nothing more than a faint hope that I might be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, the movie fails to offer anything beyond what the decidedly un-funny previews suggest. The gross humor - like the gazillion gratuitous boob shots (none of them Alba's) and an incredibly awkward Dane Cook sex montage - comes off as simply crude and cringe-worthy.

The movie begins with pre-teen Charlie’s first game of spin-the-bottle when the bottle lands on a brooding 10-year-old goth girl. When he denies her 7 minutes in heaven she put an anti-love hex on him. Charlie grows up to become a successful dentist who is blissfully unaware of his inability to love, simply taking advantage of the beautiful women who inexplicably throw themselves at him (so, it wasn't that bad of a hex, really). It’s not until his ex-girlfriend uses her wedding toast to thank him for helping her find her match that Charlie realizes something may be amiss with all of the no-strings attached action he’s been getting. At the wedding, Charlie also meets Cam (Alba) a penguin keeper that he thinks he could really fall for. Yes, a penguin keeper. He finds her extreme klutziness endearing and immediately begins to pursue her. He wants to change his ways and get serious with her but his uber-creepy friend Stu (Dan Fogler) won’t hear of it. Stu has a plastic surgery practice and specializes in - what else? - boob jobs. He lives vicariously through Charlie’s overactive sex life since his crude moves prove fruitless with the ladies. His sexual frustration leads to many obvious boob jokes and one disturbing scene in which he pleasures himself with a grapefruit and a dish scrubber. I’ll leave the details up to your imagination.

Overall, the crass jokes fall flat. It seems an odd choice to have the burden of physical comedy rest upon Alba, while Dane Cook takes on the role of the romantic. Alba's "cute but clumsy" comes off as "pretty but dumb." It’s Cook’s comedic timing that keeps the movie bearable, but he’s not believable as the romantic hero.

As the credits start to roll and you breathe a sigh of relief that you’re finally free, the movie ends on a note even more disgusting than any of the proceeding scenes. You’ll never look at Dane Cook or a cute stuffed animal penguin the same way again. But hey, when you’re making a bad movie, go big or go home. In this case, it’s the audience that should really just stay home.

I know that both Dane Cook and Jessica Alba have some fans out there, though I must say I don't know how I feel about the previews I've seen for their upcoming comedy Good Luck Chuck. It could be cute, or it might be obnoxious. What do you think?

Last night Jessica Alba and Dane Cook came out to premiere their new comedy Good Luck Chuck in LA. The actress just arrived home from her trip on the east coast promoting the movie and talking about how exciting it was for her to venture into comedy. Dane looks like he has dyed his hair darker and it doesn't really suit him. Neither does the suit. I prefer Dane casual. As for the movie in general, it's not screaming blockbuster but who knows - maybe a good laugh is exactly what everyone needs this weekend. Will you be going to check out the movie?

Jessica Alba Gets Goofy in Good Luck Chuck

Last June we saw Jessica Alba with her boyfriend Cash and her pups on a break from filming Good Luck Chuck with Dane Cook. A few weeks ago Jessica was spotted again with her man doing their normal together stuff. This weekend Jessica was spotted having lunch with a friend at The Ivy. She doesn't look as happy as she normally does when she's with Cash but she knew she'd be facing the cameras so we don't think she's hiding anything. Besides, maybe she wants to get noticed since her new movie is coming out this summer.

It was a wintry mix on Gossip Girl this week. Serena goes a little agro planning Jenny's sweet 16 birthday party, landing in Spain for a week (luck out). Jenny insists she wants something low profile and ends up rebelling and inviting actual teenagers to her party - what a concept. A shopping trip to Missoni is a nice treat. Meanwhile, after being newly broken up with, Vanessa takes a naughty turn finding solace in Chuck (!). Just as well, because Blair and Nate are playing kissy face again. Good stuff, but were you watching for the fashion details?

Pop Watch: Gossip Girl, Ep 6 "The Handmaiden's Tale"

Wow. So much happened in last night's Gossip Girl, that I'm kind of exhausted! I'm still loving everyone, and the addition of Vanessa, who is awesome (though, I'm a little disappointed that, unlike the book character, she doesn't have a shaved head.). So, two big parties last night. But which looked more exciting? The gang's masquerade ball or the parents' Moroccan-themed event? Both were so ridiculously decadent...and full of the scandal that I love.
Dan needs to stop lying, he has terrible luck and there were so many consequences this episode. Hopefully he learned his lesson as he got caught in every single lie he told. Maybe he's just naive, and I know he's just trying to stop people getting hurt but... just, stop!
New entrant Vanessa is totally rocking a Lily Allen look with the sportswear, neon colours, and big gold earrings.
Ah, scandal in the Archibald household, things got almost Skins-esque when the cocaine came into view. It was all handled so nonchalantly for American network TV – they weren't even shy about Chuck wanting some.

The titular blog finally got some screen time. I wasn't too keen on the narration from gossip girl at the start of the series, but she has definitely grown on me. With all the complications of the plot sometimes it's a useful tool to progress the story and disseminate information.
ANTM fans, did you notice cycle 7 winner CariDee English on Chuck's dad's arm...for a second?
So Jenny is slowly showing signs she could totally jump over S and B's heads and become an evil head honcho of the Upper East Side. Where did she get those guts from? Locking Chuck up outside? Nice.
Speaking of Mr. Bass – I adored Chuck's devil mask and red suit... perfect!
I'm surprisingly still enjoying the parents. Even though Rufus Humphrey is still no Sandy Cohen and needs to stop trying to be. I think it's the hair that makes me think he's trying to be Sandy...
I grinned when Dan qualified his love for Vanessa as a "16-year-old" thing. So much older and wiser now that they are 17. Yes – 17. I know, I know... but back in the day Dawson never looked like a teenager right? So lets not dwell on this.
I thought Nate was a little pathetic during his proclamation of love for Serena (or, as the case may be, Jenny, who he thought was Serena). I know he's going through a weird time, but... just give up on trying to get with Serena for now!

Jessica Alba Is Ready For Her Comedic Debut

Jessica Alba smiled for the cameras and signed a few autographs after stopping by Regis & Kelly yesterday. She is starting to make the rounds to promote her new movie Good Luck Chuck, where she plays the love interest for Dane Cook. The film is one of Jessica's first comedic roles, but apparently she's been making people laugh since she was little. In a recent interview, she said,

Yeah, I've always been wanting to do comedy. That's one of the main reasons I got into this business in the first place. I've always loved to make people laugh and it was the way that I sort of broke the ice when I was a kid with my friends. I'd always do little skits or do little things, do anything really, to make people laugh. Oddly, in this business, I never really got a shot at it. I'm not good at the half-hour comedy ba-dum-bump stuff. I'm more into the physical comedy.

Jessica has talked a lot about how she likes to change things up, so we're happy that she's getting to try new things. Be sure to check back in to Buzz later this week for our review of Good Luck Chuck.
