With Scarlett Johansson's album of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head hitting stores today, some folks may be wondering: Who's this Tom Waits character, and why would someone like ScarJo want to cover a bunch of his songs?
Waits is one of the great American songwriters, but several of his best-known songs became famous only once covered by someone else. He penned "Downtown Train," but that song will forever be associated with Rod Stewart; same goes for "Jersey Girl" and Bruce Springsteen.

Today, the Magnetic Fields — the quirky pop band fronted by the deep-voiced Stephin Merritt — release Distortion, the band's first album in four years. While there are lots of good starting points, here's my guide to Getting Into the Magnetic Fields.

Today's Getting Into idea comes from WhiplashGirlchild, who recently wrote in asking which Bob Dylan albums she should buy next.

The Box, the new thriller from Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly, tells the story of a financially troubled married couple who receive a box containing a button. The next morning, a creepy mysterious stranger tells them that they will receive $1 million if they push the button, but someone in the world will die. The movie, which is based on a short story by Richard Matheson, is set in Richmond, VA, in the year 1976, so there's plenty of fun, funky styling to the set.
