Trend Alert: Faking a Shorter Style

Faking a shorter haircut by means of skillfully placed hair pins is nothing new. In fact, we saw Rosario Dawson do her own faux-crop late last year, followed by Nicole Kidman's asymmetric version. In recent times, the look has taken on resurgence in popularity, as celebrities have been tricking us out with their own adaptations, giving the appearance of freshly cut locks. Kate Beckinsale's full-in-the-front updo gave the illusion of an angled wedge at the Whiteout premiere; both Jennifer Lopez and Elizabeth Banks opted for wavy, tousled styles; and Kristen Stewart faked us out at the VMAs with her memorable faux bowl cut. Lovely Ladies of Hollywood Come Out For a Pre-Emmys Party

The Emmys are this Sunday in LA, but that's not stopping the nominees - and even those who aren't up for awards - from starting the celebrations. Entertainment Weekly linked up with the Women in Film organization to host a bash last night at the Sunset Marquis hotel with Audrina Patridge, AnnaLynne McCord, and former Twilighter Rachelle LeFevre turning out for the red carpet. Newly pregnant Jenna Elfman of Accidentally on Purpose struck a pose alongside Jennie Garth, whose husband Peter has been spending his time up in Vancouver working out with Kellan Lutz. Before the big ceremony this weekend, make sure to fill out Buzz's Emmy ballot and enter to win a $1,000 gift certificate to Best Buy!

Elizabeth Banks Joins Russell Crowe in French Film Remake

Have you seen the French thriller Pour elle? I haven't, but now I'd like to before the English-language remake comes to theaters, courtesy of Paul Haggis (writer/director of Crash). The remake, titled The Next Three Days, had already nabbed Russell Crowe for the male lead and now it looks like Elizabeth Banks will play his wife.

The plot description for Pour elle reads: "Lisa and Julien are married and lead a happy uneventful life with their son Oscar. But their life radically changes one morning, when the police comes to arrest Lisa on murder charges. She's sentenced to 20 years of prison. Convinced of his wife's innocence, Julien decides to act. How far will he be willing to go for her?" Diane Kruger, currently starring in Inglourious Basterds, plays the wife in the French version.

I find Banks so funny and refreshing in her comedic roles, but she's been going kind of dramatic on us recently, playing a scary stepmother in The Uninvited and portraying Laura Bush in W. Funny People Celebrate the Latest From Judd Apatow

A handful of Hollywood's most hilarious actors and actresses gathered together for the premiere of Funny People in LA last night. Eric Bana and Seth Rogen suited up while Adam Sandler kept to his casual style. Leslie Mann made a splash in her all-pink ensemble, but Rashida Jones looked equally gorgeous in muted tones - what lipstick shade do you like best on her? Director Judd Apatow had three dates for his big night, though his wife and daughters earned their tickets with roles in the film. On July 31, we'll get to check out the film, and it already seems like a home run with such an entertaining cast.

Jennifer Jokes About Searching For a Stable Leading Man

Jennifer Aniston looked stunning in silver at the Women In Film 2009 Crystal And Lucy Awards in LA on Friday. Chelsea Handler sneaked in a joke about John Mayer as she presented Jennifer with the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film. Aniston responded by making fun of her own love life saying, "I have a strange parallel with movies I was doing and my life off screen. First, it was The Good Girl...which evolved into Rumor Has It, followed by Derailed. Then there was The Breakup. Followed by the lighter side, Friends With Money. If anyone has a movie called Everlasting Love With an Adult Stable Man, that would be great! I'm at table six, and my agents are at table 12." Love her sense of humor.

Jennifer was joined on the red carpet by some of her fellow leading ladies like Jodie Foster, Elizabeth Banks and Holly Hunter. Up-and-coming star Selena Gomez was surrounded by some great role models while Jenny McCarthy kept it sleek in her pantsuit. Catherine Hardwicke has had quite a whirlwind year in the success of Twilight but now she's shifting her focus elsewhere as she and Emile Hirsch take on Hamlet.

We couldn't leave you this week without some of Cannes's hottest red carpet looks. Eva Longoria exuded ultimate glamour wearing an icy blue Versace gown embellished with intricate silver beading; Elizabeth Banks gave off an old-school Hollywood vibe in her red-hot Armani Prive frock; and Abbie Cornish wowed in a dramatic, one-shoulder lavender ruffled gown. How-To: Elizabeth Banks's Sweet and Sexy Makeup

Elizabeth Banks is often spotted sporting old-school hairstyles. And as the actress walked the red carpet earlier today at the Cannes Film Festival, Fab and I couldn't help but notice. While Elizabeth chose a head-to-toe beaded gown and vintage-inspired hairstyle in a longer length, it was her combination of makeup tones that caught our attention. A smokey palette of dusty purple-gray ones on the eyes, coupled with soft pink on the lips and cheeks, made for a perfect balance of sweet and sexy - ideal for any upcoming Spring or Summer soirée.

If you're thinking about replicating this look at home, I've got tips on re-creating it when you read more.

Eyes: Generously line both the upper and lower lash lines with black pencil, such as Maybelline Expert Eyes Pencil in Velvet Black ($3). Next, apply the deeper-toned gray shadow from Rimmel Colour Rush Quad Eye Shadow in Smokey Purple ($6.29) on the lids. Tap onto the liner to lock it in. Finally, create a soft winged-out look by adding either of the medium-toned smokey purple shades to the outer contours of the eyes. Smudge into the lower lash line for a cohesive look. For extra drama, try a shimmering pale pink highlighter right below the brow, like Bare Escentuals Eye Color in Cultured Pearl ($13).
Cheeks and lips: Since the cheek and lip colors match so closely in this look, why not go the route of a multitasker? Try Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks ($22) in Powder Pink for that fresh-faced glow.

2009 Cannes Film Festival: Elizabeth Banks

Holy glamour puss. Check out Elizabeth Banks in head-to-toe beaded Andrew Gn. She's truly outrageous. The Cannes Film Festival just began and she's already on my best dressed list. The cap sleeves and sweetheart neck are old-school gorgeous and the subtle train is divine. And the black and blue hues are mysterious. Her cat-like eye makeup and sexy curls are also worth mentioning. She could have ditched the thick black cuffs though a simple black satin Swarovski clutch is perfection. Are you as bedazzled as I am?

James McAvoy, Elizabeth Banks Team Up For Dark Comedy

Aww, this cast is so adorable: James McAvoy, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Friel and Laura Linney have all signed on for the dark comedy The Details. No real details yet on Friel or Linney's roles, but apparently the story centers on a couple, to be played by McAvoy and Banks, "who discover an infestation of raccoons in their back yard. Disagreements over how to deal with the animals lead to an escalating series of events."

There's not too much to say about this project yet besides the fact that I'm so intrigued to see Banks and McAvoy together onscreen. I never would have thought of pairing up these two, but now that I think about it, this seems like it could be really funny (and McAvoy is always very easy to watch, of course). Who else would you want to see teamed up with James McAvoy? Do you think he and Banks will do well together?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below, you can also catch Jean-Claude Van Damme in JCVD on DVD.

Nothing But the Truth
I didn't get to see this in the theaters, so I'm curious to check out this political thriller starring Kate Beckinsale, Matt Dillon, Angela Bassett, Vera Farmiga, David Schwimmer, and Alan Alda.

The movie's plot is described as "ripped from the headlines" and centers on a journalist (Beckinsale) who outs an acquaintance of hers as a CIA agent. Things get interesting when the government's prosecutor (Dillon) sends the journalist to jail for contempt. The movie was written and directed by Rod Lurie, the guy behind one of my favorite political movies, The Contender.

Special features include commentary from the director, deleted scenes, and a making-of featurette.

Bride Wars
Hey, speaking of wedding tips we can learn from movies: Don't . . . destroy a life long friendship over a conflict in wedding scheduling! Which is to say, Bride Wars is out on DVD.

The movie stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as best friends who spend their lives dreaming of weddings together, and part of that dream is getting married at the Plaza Hotel. After both women get engaged, though, things get nasty when the Plaza books both their weddings on the same day. Instead of graciously working it out as two intelligent, grown women might do, the brides-to-be turn against each other, with each trying to sabotage the other's wedding. Needless to say, their friendship suffers.

Special features include three deleted scenes, including an alternate opening, and a featurette titled - wait for it - "The Perfect White Dress."

What Doesn't Kill You
Here's another movie I am excited to bring home to watch. Netflix has a good description of the plot: "Partners in crime Paulie (Ethan Hawke) and Brian (Mark Ruffalo) find themselves at odds after years of pulling dangerous jobs, surviving turf wars and evading a determined detective (Donnie Wahlberg) in this gritty crime drama set in South Boston. The childhood buddies have gone through the wringer together, but when Brian's relationship with his wife (Amanda Peet) begins to fall apart, their loyal friendship is tested."

The New York Times called it a "a no-nonsense, few-frills crime drama about two losers hustling their way into an early grave" that "says a little something about what it means to look at the American dream from the bottom up." Sounds awesome.

Special features include commentary with writer/director Brian Goodman and writer Donnie Wahlberg; deleted and alternate scenes; and "Makes You Stronger: The Making Of What Doesn't Kill You."

The Uninvited
Elizabeth Banks had a good year in '08 and has been popping up in movies left and right well into '09. The Uninvited was one of them, and it looks pretty darn scary.

Netflix's description of this remake of a Korean film is super-creepy: "Committed to a mental hospital after her mother's tragic death, teenager Anna (Emily Browning) discovers upon her release that her father (David Strathairn) plans to marry his deceased wife's former nurse, Rachael (Elizabeth Banks), a woman who may not have the best intentions. Foreboding warnings from her mother's ghost only cement Anna's suspicions." Yikes! I'm such a wimp about scary movies that I will definitely be recruiting people to watch this with me.

Special features include a behind-the-scenes featurette called "Unlocking the Uninvited," deleted scenes, and an alternate ending.
