TV Tonight: Degrassi

Between Gossip Girl, Greek, Privileged, and 90210, plenty of shows these days are competing for my teen-TV-loving heart. But deep down, nothing will ever replace my darling Degrassi, which returns to The N tonight.

This is going to be a pretty big year of transition for my favorite Canadian school kids: Emma, Manny, and Liberty are moving on to Smithdale University, while many of the current Degrassi students - including Darcy (Shanae Grimes, in what's apparently her Degrassi swan song) - welcome new siblings to the school. I'm pretty overwhelmed by this list of new characters (heck, I still haven't gotten used to Holly J and Anya being around), but luckily, The N has a handy guide to the whole ensemble's likes and dislikes. (Darcy's little sis is a nerd! Who knew?) Also, there's now a character named Blue Chessex, which puts simple names like "Chuck Bass" to shame.

Degrassi has its one-hour premiere tonight at 8 p.m. EDT, but check your local listings since it's hard to keep track of The N shows sometime. Come on, you can admit it - will you be watching? To check out a trailer and a clip of Emma, Manny, and Liberty at college, just read more.

Saved By the Bell Is Coming to The N

If you've missed hanging out with Zack, Kelly, Slater, and Screech at The Max, you might want to see if your cable package includes The N. The network just bought the rights to all six seasons of the show, and episodes will start airing in January - hopefully at a more decent hour than those 7 a.m. airings on TBS.

The N - best known (to me, anyway) for showing Degrassi: The Next Generation - has been sharing time with another network, Noggin, for several years, but as of Dec. 31, the two are splitting up. To prepare, the network has snapped up some classic teen shows, including That '70s Show, which will start airing in June.

The network also has some other original shows on the way, including a reality series called Queen Bees that attempts to reform the meanest mean girls. But other than Saved by the Bell, I'm most excited about the return of Degrassi for its seventh season, starting Jan. 18.

What other teen shows would you like to see turn up on The N? Personally, I wish someone would get the rights to Good Morning, Miss Bliss and Hang Time. Oh man, anyone else remember Hang Time?

TV Tonight: "Degrassi" and "The Best Years"

Who's excited for tonight's return of new episodes of "Degrassi: The Next Generation"? Besides, um, me? The show's most recent U.S. run ended over the winter with the death of J.T., and I've been craving more cheesy, intense teen drama ever since. While many of the "Degrassi" crew are still in high school, it looks like this season will also keep following the original cast members who are now in college. This scene from tonight's episode, for example, shows Paige having a panic attack during a college test.

So I suppose it makes sense that The N is also launching its first all-college series, "The Best Years," tonight right after "Degrassi." Created by a former "Degrassi" executive producer, "The Best Years" follows a group of freshmen (including main character Samantha Best, groan) at a prestigious Massachusetts university. From the clips I've seen, this one looks to be a little too over-the-top, but it's at least trying to follow in "Degrassi"'s quippy footsteps. "Degrassi" Fans Say Goodbye to J.T.

The kids of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" have never had it easy, with a steady string of absent fathers, Internet stalkers, pregnancies, senseless shootings, drug overdoses, and the like. But the most recent episode went one step further by killing off lovable goofball J.T. Yorke, whom longtime fans will remember as the skinny kid who beat people up with his school mascot costume.

Now "Degrassi" watchers are in mourning - and judging by the dozens of memorials that have shown up on YouTube recently, some are taking the loss of J.T. rather hard. A few of the videos relive some of J.T.'s happier moments; others are more overwrought. If it weren't for the CTV logos or "Beyond the Break" promos that pop in every now and then, you might think the memorials were actually for ... you know, a real person.

Get Psyched for "Degrassi"!

Alright, let's talk: Who else besides me is super-excited for tonight's season premiere of "Degrassi: The Next Generation"? The N will show the first of five new episodes tonight, as Craig returns - and brings a little bit of his rock star lifestyle back with him. There's a a pretty cool promo for tonight's episode, "What's It Feel Like to be a Ghost?" But I'm much more intrigued by this teaser for the whole season, which promises in a slightly evil voice that someone will die. Check it out.
