Don't Run Yourself Into a Stress Fracture

Over training happens. You love what you do. You do it too much. Your body starts to break down. Your bones begin to crack. An over use injury you definitely want to avoid is a stress fracture.

Common in professional sports that intensely work the lower body like running and basketball - hoops star Yao Ming has been suffering from one in his foot for two years now and marathoner Paula Radcliffe has battled one in her femur.

A fracture, aka broken bone, is caused by a sudden trauma like a fall. A stress fracture occurs when a bone can't hold up against repeated stress overtime. Cells known as osteoblasts make bones and attempt to keep the bone strong and rebuild them while under strain, while osteoclasts are cells that remove damaged bone tissue. The repeated stress weakens the bones, and ultimately the osteoclast cells win creating a microscopic fracture on the surface of the bone. This small crack can create lots of pain. X-rays usually cannot detect the fracture, but an MRI or bone scan if deemed necessary can diagnose a stress fracture. Often a stress fracture can be diagnosed based on your history, since over use injuries often run a specific course.

Would You Decorate With a Dinosaur?

This week, a a 65-million-year-old triceratops skull sold for $242,000 at Bonhams' Natural History auction. According to the auction house, the bones may end up as home ornamentation, as a really big sculpture, or as a base for a coffee table. While I can't imagine finding the money or room (or desire) to place a dinosaur skull in my house, I'm sure there are some paleontologists out there who might love to bring their work home. If pressed to decorate with dinosaurs, though, I'd opt for Sayaka Yamamoto's soft sculptures.

Why Hugh Won't Be Following Stephen Into Twitter Obsession

Hugh Laurie was spotted at LAX yesterday, managing to walk through the terminal mostly undetected with his rather bushy beard and cap pulled down low over his eyes. Having worked with buddy Stephen Fry for many years, Hugh's been seeing a lot of him at work more recently, thanks to Stephen's guest starring role on Bones, which films in the next studio to Hugh's series House! Hugh's been speaking out about Stephen's obsession with Twitter, and how he doesn't understand it, saying:

"I think if people were able to take these 140 characters and develop a poetic Western form - a haiku of our own in which all human existence could be compressed into those 140 characters - that would be a satisfying thing, but that's not what I see when I read them."

What do you think - are you with Hugh in wishing that people would elevate their tweets to a higher intellectual level?

Tonight's episode of Bones on Fox features a very special guest star: Stewie Griffin. Yes, the cranky Family Guy baby steps into Booth's brain (see a preview here). I figure, if a cartoon can guest on a live-action show, there must be all sorts of other silly TV crossovers just waiting to happen. No, none of these are likely to actually show up on my screen (and, in all honesty, that's probably a good thing) - but it's amusing to joke about nonetheless.

TV Tonight: House and Bones

It's a big night on Fox tonight, as each of the network's dramas pulls out all the stops for the final Tuesday of sweeps. House puts the Survivor-style plot line to rest when Dr. House announces his hiring decision, and Bones takes romantic tension to a new level with a kiss between Bones and Booth.

That Bones kiss has been so heavily promoted at this point, I have to assume it's not a spoiler. The episode has a Christmas theme - the two find themselves investigating the death of Kristopher Kringle, a Santa impersonator - so naturally, there's mistletoe involved. Do you think this is a good move for the show, or would a romance between those two be icky?

House, meanwhile, finally chooses which job candidates will get his fellowships - or at least that's what we're told. Yes, there were rumors long ago about which doctors would win, but wouldn't it be great if that were all made up? Frankly, I wouldn't be shocked if he fired all the newbies and brought the old team back, though that would be a bit of a ripoff. If I could keep just one of them, it would be Kutner; sure, he may be inept, but Kal Penn makes me laugh.
