While Big Love is nowhere near as hip as Mad Men when it comes to its sets, there's no denying that the careful crafting of the show's look adds depth to the series. Since the show's central thesis is the importance of family (even if it is a rather unusual family), the set design reflects that idea, as well as the personalities of those family members. HBO to Air Controversial Big Love Episode Despite LDS Outcry

Thank goodness the show will go on, because I could not take one less of the two Big Love episodes left this season. What's the problem? Sunday's episode will feature a ceremony sacred (and kind of secret) to the mainstream Mormon church.

In the episode, Jeanne Tripplehorn's character, notorious do-gooder and wishy-washy polygamist Barb, goes through an endowment ceremony when she's threatened with excommunication. I hesitate to describe what endowment is because I'll probably get it wrong. But it's like an adult baptism with the water and the oil, and unlike it in that participants are taught gospel laws, given key words they'll need in the afterlife, and tested afterward.

Probably the most accurate depiction you'll find outside a Mormon temple is Sunday's episode. An adviser who is familiar (yet nameless?) with temple ceremonies advised Big Love's producers so they could get every detail right. He even remained on set during filming. HBO has half-heartedly apologized, saying, "Obviously, it was not our intention to do anything disrespectful to the church but to those who may be offended, we offer our sincere apology."

From the church's point of view, HBO is breaking its earlier promise to focus on polygamy and stay away from mainstream Mormonism. But the only legal promise HBO ever made was a one-time disclaimer that aired in the series premiere, stating the modern-day church did not support polygamy.

Fringe, Big Love, The Hills, and More Get Slots at Paley Festival

What do The Hills, Fringe, and The Mentalist have in common? They've all been honored with spots at this year's Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles.

This year's lineup for the festival seems like an especially eclectic group of shows - there's reality, there's online (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), there's drama (Big Love), and there's even something we haven't seen yet: On April 19, the festival will screen the final three as-yet-unaired episodes of Pushing Daisies.

One thing missing from this year's lineup is any tribute to a classic or cult TV show, like last year's Buffy the Vampire Slayer reunion. I suppose it's possible that some of the original Beverly Hills 90210 cast members will show up for the 90210 event, but the focus definitely seems to be on the new class.

HBO Renews Its Vows With Big Love

Big news for Big Love: The polygamy drama will be back next year for a fourth season! HBO announced the renewal with a statement saying, "The series keeps getting better and better."

One thing that wasn't getting better, at least earlier this season, was the ratings - the show's season three premiere (which came after a long break caused in large part by the writers' strike) drew just 1.2 million viewers. But The Hollywood Reporter notes that the show's grown in the ratings each week since then, and the show's currently averaging about 5 million viewers a week once all the repeat airings are taken into account.

The show's excited co-creators gave E! a statement celebrating the good news, making the following promise to fans:

As season three continues they'll forget about the time they waited and get caught up in our best season ever. And we also swear we won't make them wait as long next year.

Well, that sounds promising. Tell me: Are you excited that there's more Big Love on the way in 2010?

First Look: Big Love Season Three

It's been such a long wait for the third season of Big Love. Thanks to the writers' strike, the HBO drama won't return till January - almost 18 months after it was last on TV.

But there are finally some real signs that we're getting close to the premiere, including the first couple of promos that HBO's rolled out over the past week or so. The first is creepy and moody; there's no dialogue, just the haunting sounds of the Black Keys song "Lies" while some seriously dark things take place in the brief video clips. The second includes interviews with several cast members talking about how the show has been "amped up" for the third season. Here's hoping that whatever we see in January makes this long wait worthwhile. You Asked: Should I Move For Love?

Dear Sugar,

I am 29 years old and in love with a guy who is in love with me. We met several months ago, but just a couple of weeks ago he moved thousands of miles away for a job - our relationship wasn't established enough for him to stay here with me over the job, or for me to quit my job and leave everything behind to move with him. We decided to stay committed since we love each other so much, but I feel so sad that he's gone. We couldn't have been more excited to have met each other and spend time together, and now that he's not physically here, I'm feeling incredibly empty. We are both getting to a point in our lives were we would like to settle down, but I have family, friends, and a good job here. He had the same, but was having a horrible time finding a good job in his field so he had to relocate. I plan to go back to school and get my master's degree where I currently live and continue to work at my job. We have talked about what it would take for things to work out between us and he feels strongly that after a year, if we are still in love, that we need to be together. The only thing is that that would probably require me to move, meaning giving up my grad school program, my job, and my life as I know it. I understand that I might be jumping the gun here, but I don't know what to do. Should I try dating other people or should I stay open to changing my life around for the man I love? - In Limbo Lanna

Dating long distance can be incredibly frustrating, but if there's an end in sight, I think it can be manageable. It doesn't sound like he's able to be flexible with his living/job situation, so if you're willing to make him a priority, I think you should take a chance and see where this relationship goes! Since you plan to start a master's program soon, instead of going to school in your town, apply to schools where your boyfriend lives. If you get in, I'm sure your program will help you find a job in your field. If you begin a program where you are currently, it'll make the decision to leave after a year that much harder.

If the distance between you two is just too hard, I don't think you should put a time limit on waiting to see if your love will last - you're in love now and that's what matters. I know packing up your things and leaving your comfort zone isn't a small decision, so I suggest taking some vacation time and visiting your boyfriend. While you're there, really try to imagine what your life would be like if you moved. Get to know the surroundings, do some job hunting, and gauge how it would be to live together. At the end of the day, this is going to be a gut decision so if it feels right, go with it! Your friends and family will always be there for you if it doesn't work out so don't let the opportunity to be with the person you love pass you by. Remember, you only live once!

TV Tonight: Big Love, From the Beginning

HBO was kind enough to fill the Big Love-sized hole in my heart with a recap video a few weeks back. But if you'd rather catch up on the show's first two seasons the old-fashioned way, it will be possible starting tonight.

HBO2 will air one episode from the series in order for the next 24 Saturdays, starting at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT tonight. It's the first time I can remember that HBO has shown the series in its entirety, and it's a great opportunity to meet the Henricksons if you've yet to make their acquaintance.

Catch Up on Big Love in Four Minutes

This "Big Love in Four Minutes" video HBO just put together makes me a little sad, because it's still going to be a long, long wait to see the show's third season. Thanks to the writers' strike, the series - which should have been on right now - won't be seen again till January 2009.

The good news is, that should give anyone who hasn't seen the first two seasons of the drama plenty of time to get caught up the old-fashioned way, by renting DVDs or checking out episodes On Demand. But if you're just not sure you want to commit, this four-minute summary is a pretty good one, with all the typical dry humor these ". . . in x minutes" videos tend to have. (I especially like the little "bleeeep" noise that keeps recurring when they talk about video poker.)

At least I'll be able to get a fix of some of the actors in other roles before January - Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia and Ginnifer Goodwin in He's Just Not That Into You. For now, though, it's just good to see Bill and his wives together, however briefly. To check out the video, just read more.
