The New Middle Age

What age would you consider to be "middle aged"? 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s?

Well it turns out that 60% of Americans believe that the 60s are the new "middle age," thanks to healthy eating, longer life spans and not to mention a cool $9.4 billion spent per year in cosmetic surgery. Yikes.

For women, our 40s are being celebrated as the time where we can be comfortable and confident in both our personal and financial terms -- Most people truly believe that life starts at 40. Giving women worldwide, something to look forward to.

Americans May be Turning Into Giants

According to new U.S. Census Bureau data, Americans spend an average of about eight-and-a-half hours a day doing sedentary activities such as watching television, using computers (though I think it's OK if you're on FIT), reading, listening to the radio, or going to the movies. This sedentary lifestyle is the main contributing factor as to why we are the most obese people on the planet.

Other contributing factor found: Americans consumed more than twice as much high fructose corn syrup per person than in 1980. In addition to getting fatter, we're also getting taller.

What's more? As health-care costs continue to increase, more Americans pray for their health than invest in all forms of alternative medicine or therapy combined.

Dear the all mighty, please don't let this double-triple burger be bad for me...

Fit's Tip: Don't become a statistic and get moving. If you're one that spends 8.5 hours sedentary, then start cutting back and start moving. Go for a walk or take the dog out -- anything, even if it's small, will help.

America's Next Top Model Quiz: "America's Next Top Model Is..."

The moment we've all been waiting for has finally arrived: I've been gearing up with my America's Next Top Model quizzes for months, and Bella has been getting in on the excitement with her ANTM faceoff game - and now we finally have our Cycle 13 winner! (Not to mention the first petite champ.) Cue the drumroll and take this one last test to judge your knowledge from the finale.

And afterward, I'm curious to hear how you felt about this season overall. The competition wasn't as stiff as I had hoped, and I would've liked a few more solid contenders for the No. 1 spot - but we definitely got a mix of some fun personalities. (Laura and Jennifer immediately come to mind.) Weigh in on the cycle - and the final winner - in the comments. Or just click on over to the America's Next Top Model group in the BuzzSugar Community!

Are There Too Many Chef Shows on TV?

We've already talked about the abundance of dance shows on TV, but there's another genre that seems to be taking over the networks - competitive cooking. NBC just picked up United Plates of America, a new series by the producers of Top Chef which will pit hopeful restaurateurs against each other for the ultimate prize of starting their own chain. The winner gets to open four locations on the night of the finale. That's a pretty cool gift package, but it has me thinking - don't we have enough of this programming on TV already?

The premise does sound more unique than most, but it used to be that the Food Network was the only TV cooking choice with its popular Iron Chef franchise. Since then, other channels have gotten in on the act, too, like Fox's Hell's Kitchen and of course Bravo with Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, <a href=http://buzzsugar.com/tags/top+chef+just+desserts">Top Chef: Just Desserts . . . need I go on?

Of course, if you're a foodie, you may be excited to have yet another show for your TiVo queue, but I wonder if all of this is overkill. How about you?

Are There Too Many Chef Shows on TV?

Yes - Keep the regulars like Iron Chef or Top Chef, and ditch the rest.

No - I love 'em all! They're fun to watch.

America's Next Top Model Quiz: "Hawaiian Hip Hop"

This week was a first in the history of America's Next Top Model: With only one episode until the finals, the judges decided to eliminate not one, but two girls. I honestly couldn't decide who I preferred seeing in the last round - Nicole and Laura, Nicole and Jennifer? (You already know how I feel about Erin, and it was a no-brainer that Nicole would make the cut.) So who got the boot? Take my quiz and see how much you remember!

And if you don't agree with the judges' picks this week - or want to just chat about the show in general - check out the America's Next Top Model group in the BuzzSugar Community.

Top Chef Producers to Create NBC Restaurateur Show

From Magical Elves, the producers of Bravo's Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, and the soon-to-air Top Chef: Just Desserts, comes yet another reality TV show, tentatively titled United Plates of America.

Unlike its sister productions, United Plates will air on NBC. The premise: aspiring restaurateurs compete in a number of challenges involving the restaurant's concept, cuisine, management, and marketability. The judges' panel will include wealthy investors in the culinary and business world. The prize is being called "among the biggest in reality show history" - the winner will receive a restaurant chain that opens in four locations across the US - funded by the investors themselves. "It's a culinary competition that anybody can take part in," said executive producer Dan Cutforth. "All you need is a great idea for a restaurant."

Finally, a different foodie reality TV concept. This show could be wildly captivating and educational, because the average American viewer doesn't have an inkling of knowledge about the operations behind a restaurant. I would definitely tune in to check out the show. What about you?

ANTM Beauty Quiz: "America's Next Top Model Is..."

It's official: Nicole Fox is America's Next Top Model. Contain your thrill! OK, while this finale wasn't the most suspenseful ever, it was nice to see that two sweet and semi-geeky girls made it to the end, right? As my short-legged cat Milo and I watched the episode, we had mixed emotions. This may be the first time that the winner had more viability as a model, and Nicole could pick up some edgier gigs. Still, I couldn't help but want to hug Laura, who clearly was crushed by being the runner-up. This episode earns just a two-Milo rating. And while ANTM will always be a guilty pleasure, this cycle came up a little, well, short. Do you agree? Take my trivia quiz (and Buzz's, too) and tell me what you think.

This episode was all about the water - cliff diving, scuba diving - and some of the girls freaked. Who was able to overcome her fear and move on, and who choked? Test yourself to see if you remember all the details!

America's Next Top Model Quiz: "Let's Go Surfing"

The models flew to the Hawaiian islands, tried out a little surfing, and then posed as a mix of different races. While Bella ranked the high fashion shoot as one of her 15 worst, I thought it was a nice hour of entertainment nonetheless. (Plus, Tyra stepped behind the camera a second time - a first in ANTM's history!) Do you remember everything that went down?

Dying to speak your mind about this week's episode? Don't forget to check out America's Next Top Model group in the BuzzSugar Community!

Food Network Aims to Entertain With 2010 Lineup

Looks like Food Network's switching gears to focus less on cooking expertise and more on entertainment. On the roster for 2010: more Brian Boitano, and a new show, Worst Cooks in America.

Worst Cooks in America, which premieres Sunday, Jan. 3, features 12 "hopeless cooks" who are divided into two teams, one under the tutelage of network vet Anne Burrell and the other led by Arizona chef Beau MacMillan.

The show's premise: bad cooks undergo a five-week "culinary boot camp" where they will learn kitchen techniques from Burrell and MacMillan that they must apply in weekly elimination challenges.

After the contestants have been narrowed down to two, they will compete for a grand prize of $25,000 in a final challenge that has them preparing a three-course meal for a panel of food critics who think the dishes have been prepared by chefs Anne and Beau.

For even more entertainment, Brian Boitano fans should also stay tuned for the return of the Olympic medalist, who's back with a second season of the screwball show What Would Brian Boitano Make? in March. Will you tune in to watch either of these shows - or are they too far a departure from the classic cooking shows that once dominated Food Network?

Source
