TV Tonight: "The Unit"

I've never gotten into "The Unit," but it seems like a show I should love. The CBS drama is produced by David Mamet, who I tend to think can do no wrong, and I'm intrigued by the premise of an elite Special Forces team who must complete dangerous and top-secret missions around the world.

Tonight might be a good time for me to finally check it out, because CBS is airing two new episodes back-to-back. In the first, a mission in North Korea is compromised when a spy overhears the wife of one Unit member talking about something that seems eerily similar to the mission. Top Chef Producers to Create NBC Restaurateur Show

From Magical Elves, the producers of Bravo's Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, and the soon-to-air Top Chef: Just Desserts, comes yet another reality TV show, tentatively titled United Plates of America.

Unlike its sister productions, United Plates will air on NBC. The premise: aspiring restaurateurs compete in a number of challenges involving the restaurant's concept, cuisine, management, and marketability. The judges' panel will include wealthy investors in the culinary and business world.The prize is being called "among the biggest in reality show history" - the winner will receive a restaurant chain that opens in four locations across the US - funded by the investors themselves. "It's a culinary competition that anybody can take part in," said executive producer Dan Cutforth. "All you need is a great idea for a restaurant."

Finally, a different foodie reality TV concept. This show could be wildly captivating and educational, because the average American viewer doesn't have an inkling of knowledge about the operations behind a restaurant. I would definitely tune in to check out the show. What about you?

Are There Too Many Chef Shows on TV?

We've already talked about the abundance of dance shows on TV, but there's another genre that seems to be taking over the networks - competitive cooking. NBC just picked up United Plates of America, a new series by the producers of Top Chef which will pit hopeful restaurateurs against each other for the ultimate prize of starting their own chain. The winner gets to open four locations on the night of the finale. That's a pretty cool gift package, but it has me thinking - don't we have enough of this programming on TV already?

The premise does sound more unique than most, but it used to be that the Food Network was the only TV cooking choice with its popular Iron Chef franchise. Since then, other channels have gotten in on the act, too, like Fox's Hell's Kitchen and of course Bravo with Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, Top Chef: Just Desserts . . . need I go on?

Of course, if you're a foodie, you may be excited to have yet another show for your TiVo queue, but I wonder if all of this is overkill. How about you?

Study Rates Norway Best Place to Live

According to an annual report by the United Nations, Norway is the most desirable country in the world in which to live, followed by Australia and Iceland. The United States ranks 13th in the study, while the UK ranks 21st. The worst places in the world to live are Niger, Afghanistan, and Sierra Leone.

The study based its findings on criteria including literacy rates, school enrollment, country economies, and life expectancy. Norway's high rank is thanks in part to the discovery of offshore oil and gas deposits in the late 1960s.

I have to say that the efficient public transit, moderate climate, and sense of community really makes the Bay Area a great place to live, while the high property tax rates, rental rates, and overall cost of living make it less affordable, and desirable, than some other cities.

I'm a huge fan of United Bamboo, but it's so hard finding their stuff outside NYC. Lucky for me and fellow fans, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. The brand has just launched a new site complete with online shopping for ladies and gents. Like its clothing, the site is clean, minimal, and modern. Each section is categorized for easy searching and there's also a hefty sale going on. I think I already fell in love with this embellished sweatshirt. Swoon.

When I was at T4 On The Beach in the summer I had a quick chat with ex-Skins star Joe Dempsie, who played the much-loved Chris in the first two seasons of the show. With Dev Patel doing so well with Slumdog Millionaire, and a brand new cast having taken over the reigns on the show, you might be wondering what the old cast are up to. Well here's a glimpse of Joe's post-Skins career, as he plays a footballer in new movie The Damned United. The film stars Michael Sheen as Leeds United manager Brian Clough, and follows his tumultuous forty-four day reign as manager of the club, costarring Jim Broadbent and Timothy Spall. Nick and Joe Earn Their Acting Stripes After Skins

We all know what Dev Patel's been up to since the first cast of Skins left the show, but it was an exciting day for his ex-castmates Nicholas Hoult and Joe Dempsie yesterday, as each of them had a new acting project to show off. Nick is starring in New Boy, a new production in London's Trafalgar studios, in which he plays schoolboy Mark, who starts the sixth form desperate to become more popular and uses the new boy in order to achieve his goals. Fewer than 200 tickets remain for the run although more shows may be added in the summer, when Nick returns from filming a remake of Clash Of The Titans.

Meanwhile Joe looked very smart as he attended the London premiere of The Damned United, the movie he told me about at T4 On The Beach last summer while hanging out with Nick and Dev. It's great to see them all going on to do fantastic things, will you support them in their post-Skins projects?

United Arab Emirates Launches Campaign Against Lesbians

Excuse me, I'm a girl.

OK, I'm not just telling you that as an FYI. "Excuse me, I'm a girl" is actually the name of a new public campaign launched in the United Arab Emirates to crack down on lesbians.

In the UAE, lesbians are considered "manly" women that harass "normal" women. In order to address this menace, the government will employ educational and psychological experts to teach women about appropriate femininity.

A public service campaign filled with workshops and experts seems like quite a modern way to promote not-so-modern values!
