Charlize Theron stepped out for the LA premiere of The Road last night with Stuart Townsend and mom Gerda by her side. Her hair and wardrobe were light, but Charlize spiced things up with a deep red pout. Those lips sadly won't be getting anywhere near Johnny Depp in the near future — he's in talks to sign on to The Tourist, which Charlize dropped out of last month only to have Angelina Jolie pick up the role.

Several actors walked the red carpet this weekend at the London Film Festival and Rome Film Festival. Nicholas Hoult, Tom Ford, Colin Firth and Matthew Goode looked handsome in their suits at the premiere for A Single Man in London, and the capital also saw the premiere of Viggo Mortensen's The Road. Helen Mirren was in Rome for the The Last Station, and Terry Gilliam and Lily Cole were also in Italy for The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus premiere.

Sometimes movies and TV shows depict a future that is bright and hopeful — look no further than JJ Abrams's optimistic Star Trek reboot as an example. But mostly the powers that be down in Tinseltown seem to believe that audiences would rather watch stories about a nightmarish, post-apocalyptic future. Turns out Terminator Salvation was just the beginning of a surge of similarly dark and scary stories.

Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce star in this adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road. The book is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and tells the story of a father and son trying to survive in the ashes of post-apocalyptic North America as they make their way to the coast. Check out the trailer below and let me know if you think you'll see or skip the movie when it comes out in the UK later this year.

It must be Highly Anticipated Trailer Day today or something: First we got a glimpse of Nine, and now we have the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road. The movie stars Viggo Mortensen as a man coping emotionally and physically in a post-apocalyptic world and trying to defend his family.
The book uses an apocalyptic scenario as a way to meditate on themes of humanity, and the effect is stirring.
