The Real World, the show that truly gave reality TV its start, kicks off its 21st (!) season tonight in Brooklyn. Through the years, the show has spanned the globe as countless groups of strangers fight, date, and "start being real" as the cameras look on. How much do you know about this MTV institution?

Think fast: Which Real World was your first? Mine was the San Francisco season, the show's third, with the consciousness-raising storylines of HIV-positive Pedro and the attention-grabbing antics of troublemaker Puck. That season got me hooked on the show, which I followed regularly for the next decade or so, watching as group after group of attractive 20-somethings moved into an immaculately decorated house together to "stop being polite and start getting real."

How many times have we heard The Real World intro? Well, the folks who made this parody decided they needed to inject something new into the stale formula. It goes something like this: "Five strangers were picked to live in a house IKEA, work together bug people who work there who have no idea these folks are pretending to live there, and have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite, and start getting real surreal.

The Cookie Monster made news a few months back when he announced that "A cookie is a sometimes food." Say what?! The Cookie Monster, whose identity is defined by his unrestrained love for sweet cookie goodness, is cutting his sugar, counting his calories, and watching his intake?

I was initially surprised to hear that a "Real World" cast member would take the time out of his self-involved, wannabe-celebrity schedule to actually apologize for something. I tuned in only to discover that this dude's apology douche-pology required heavy-duty censoring and made the gal on the receiving end burst into tears-- all over again.

Somehow, I totally missed this news from a few weeks ago that the next "Real World" house will be a solar-powered green dwelling. According to Broadcasting and Cable, the 20th season of the reality show will be set in Hollywood and have the roomies living in an eco-friendly house, complete with solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and sustainable materials. Here are some details from the article:
According to MTV, the show will “introduce today’s youth to the ways in which they can incorporate environmentally friendly household items and make eco-friendly lifestyle choices, as seen on The Real World, into their everyday lives.”
In my humble opinion, "The Real World" has been pretty worthless over the past few years and not exactly setting a noble example for America's youth.

I don't know how it happened, but I'm completely hooked on "The Real World: Denver." Not just "oh, I'll watch it if it's on" hooked; more like "better set the TiVo" hooked. For the past two weeks, the seven strangers have been in the woods, training with Outward Bound.
