Alan Blows His Trumpet For Pam's Arrival

What a way to enter the country! Pamela Anderson flew into Heathrow airport yesterday to be greeted exuberantly by those lovable Sunday Night Project presenters Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins. JLC had a red carpet rolled out for her arrival, and Alan played his trumpet for the visiting blonde – even managing to get her to touch his horn at one point... steady!

Pamela's in town to promote Superhero Movie and will be presenting JLC and Alan's show on Sunday, ICYMI here's what I thought of the movie – I'm just sad Drake Bell didn't come with her. Still, she may only be in one scene of the film, but she's one of the most famous of the cast and if Alan and JLC keep her busy with these amusing photo opportunities then she's definitely doing a good job promoting the film!

Pop Preview: Superhero Movie

Last night I went to see a press screening of Superhero Movie, from the stable of Airplane!, The Naked Gun and the Scary Movie series.

I didn't have high hopes for this film, as spoof movies have been getting progressively worse over the past few years (Meet The Spartans anyone?), but I was actually pleasantly surprised.

It doesn't start well – in fact the first fifteen minutes are filled with bad jokes – but as I was watching I remembered that the film is certified 12A – and I think younger teens will get a good few kicks out of those minutes. Once Leslie Nielsen appears it becomes pretty enjoyable for the rest of the audience. He and Marion Ross play nicely into that nostalgia bracket and you can tell Nielsen's made his career out of his great comic timing and line delivery.

Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) manages to completely steal the couple of scenes he is in – his fast-paced, full-of-nonsense doctor even manages to make a couple of really bad jokes amusing. A few American references left the screening room silent, but there were giggles at the internet gags that some have said are grating.

Drake Bell plays the lead, nerdy Rick Riker aka Dragonfly, and I enjoyed his performance – the part's a little bland and relies on him reacting a lot, but he had a few shining moments in the midst of the insanity. Confession time: Kids TV show Drake And Josh is one of my guilty pleasures, where super-cool Drake Parker and nerdy Josh Nichols (aka Josh Peck of upcoming movie The Wackness) play a very amusing Odd Couple-like pair of step-brothers, so – for me – it was great to see him on the big screen. You might remember him as the kid who tells Tom Cruise where to go in Jerry Maguire, and he's also a musician with a couple of McFly-esque albums under his belt. Drake also performs the theme to the movie over the credits. Plus, as you may have guessed by now, I think he's pretty cute.

But enough about him, in summary, some of the movie feels a little old now, but there are a handful of laugh out loud moments that should make it worth your while. Leslie Nielsen and Jeffrey Tambor are both very funny, and while some of the set pieces do play to a teen audience, others had us all laughing. If spoofs are your thing then check it out in the cinema – the movie's at UK cinemas from Friday – but otherwise... wait for the DVD.

Pop Poll: Superhero Movie – Funny Or Lame?

I have to say I'm pretty wary of any film with "movie" at the end of it, and so I am approaching the idea of Superhero Movie (out June 6 in the UK) with trepidation.

This one is from David Zucker and features Leslie Nielsen in a large role which gave me hopes it might hark back to The Naked Gun golden days... it also seems to be playing to a younger audience than the "Scary" movies – it has a 12A certificate in the UK and stars Drake Bell who's best known from Nickelodeon series Drake & Josh (alongside The Wackness's Josh Peck) as well as his enjoyably McFly-esque albums.

Other familiar faces include Marion Ross (who Buzz interviewed recently), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) and one of the best Tom Cruise impersonators I have ever seen. But I'm still not hyped for the film, I don't think it's possible to be hyped for anything that consists of a whole load of spoofs of other, better, films. But anyway, watch the trailer and let me know what you think.

Weekend Box Office: 21 Wins the Pot

Well, it looks like 21, the film about MIT students who take Vegas by storm, was a safe bet as it easily won the top spot at the box office. However, the overall weekend box office total was down 17 percent compared to last year, Variety reports. 21 earned an estimated $23 million, beating Horton Hears a Who and firmly establishing Jim Sturgess as a viable leading man.

Compare these results to another new release this weekend: Stop-Loss, starring Ryan Phillippe, who is a household name. Another box office casualty in a long line of Iraq War-related film flops, Stop-Loss only earned $4.5 million, coming in at No. 8.

Which brings me to the other box office disappointment this weekend, Superhero Movie. Could it be that Round One of Harvey Weinstein vs. Fanboys' fanboys goes to the geeks (more on the feud here)? Protesters gathered on both coasts where Superhero was playing, though in LA it appears Weinstein was prepared with guards. One protester told the Hollywood Reporter:

Guards were everywhere. At one point, I counted nine, no joke. They hired a whole force and whenever someone showed up looking around for the protest, they were surrounded by guards and told to leave instantly or be arrested. I guess you can't really hold a protest on private property.

Ultimately the film came in the third spot with a measly $9.5 million. Is this a little bit hilarious to anyone else?

Finally, Run Fat Boy Run starring Simon Pegg came in 13th and only earned an estimated $2.3 million here in the US. The movie grossed $22.6 million in the UK last Fall.

Another Day, Another Tom Cruise Spoof

People won't quit with the Tom Cruise impersonations. A couple months back, a vid was released of Tommy boy having an on-camera discussion with heck-knows-who (the mirror?) about Scientology, being "in" or "out," and poof-spik-shoo! The dude below is a dead ringer for Tom and he's done his homework. That part about eating planets is not a joke; it's the only true way to happiness and - poof! - peace on earth. . .

Okay, so you're sick of those parody movies, and I am too. I think I have been since the first Scary Movie. But I have to show you this clip of Superhero Movie, starring a little known actor named Miles Fisher doing a spot-on impersonation of Tom Cruise in that video. In this clip the Cruise-alike talks about the new Superhero on the block – Dragonfly – and it raised a few chuckles from my household I have to say. The movie's out in the US today, and we'll have it on our screens in May.

Christian Shows Off His Size and Smile

Christian Bale looked chipper Thursday as he grabbed coffees and snacks from a Starbucks in LA. He seems to be getting back to a healthier size after losing lots of weight for The Fighter last Spring, so all those coffee drinks must be doing the trick. Christian has even more work to do before getting back into superhero shape, with production of the next Batman movie scheduled to start in the next year.

Do, Dump, or Marry? Spike Jonze

Director, skateboarder and all-around Gen X superhero Spike Jonze was told that turning the beloved children's book Where the Wild Things Are into a movie couldn't be done without serious artistic compromises. Well, not only did he prove his naysayers wrong, his movie was number one at the box office over the weekend!

This iconoclast has been doing his own thing for a while, though, starting out as an untrained videographer for skateboarders, moving on to direct cool videos for bands like The Beastie Boys, and following up on Being John Malkovich and Adaptation with a filmic ballad for the latch-key generation.

So boyish is this 39-year-old, Catherine Keener's son once asked him why he didn't live with his parents. What do you think about this talented guy?
