A Look Back at the Independent Spirit Awards!

This evening is the 25th annual Independent Spirit Awards, and to celebrate, we're taking a look back at some of the highlights over the years. The show has evolved over its quarter decade run, from a casual beach affair to a full-blown award season event. Some of our favorite actors - like Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Ryan Gosling, Heath Ledger, and Michelle Williams - have attended and even been honored for their work in independent film. Are You Excited to See Ryan Gosling in a Comedy?

Ryan Gosling has proven he's got a goofy side in interviews (and, OK, maybe on The Mickey Mouse Club), but on the big screen we usually get the more serious side of the actor. Don't get me wrong - Gosling's chops make him a welcome addition and treat to watch in any movie, but I'm particularly psyched that he's going a new direction in his upcoming project. Gosling will be starring opposite Steve Carell, playing the "suave" best friend in a comedy about a father (Carell) in the midst of marital and family woes.

The snarky sidekick often gets the most laughs, so I can't wait to see Gosling making wisecracks and trying to offer advice to Carell. Plus, the word "suave" implies a certain degree of smoothness and a tiny bit of arrogance, which I can see Gosling having a lot of fun with.

Ryan Gosling popped up courtside last night at the Staples Center in LA to see the Lakers take on the Pacers. He and a friend appeared to be in deep conversation throughout the game, with Ryan looking hot as usual in his cardigan and scuffed up boots. Ryan brought along his guy pal, and not his rumored love interest Hilary Rowland, who you guys don't seem to think is a good match for him anyway. Whoever Ryan's dating, we recently got to see his sweet side with a behind-the-scenes video of his Dead Man's Bones sound check with a children's choir.

Ryan Gosling Skips Fashion Week to Lunch With a Lady

Ryan Gosling had a lady friend for company on Saturday during lunch at LA's Chateau Marmont. It looks like he found a little dining company after a lonelier-looking meal earlier in the week. Ryan spent the weekend in California after skipping out on New York Fashion Week, where he'd been expected to DJ on Friday night at the LnA presentation. His partner in Dead Man's Bones, Zach Shields, was there to handle the music duty instead. Ryan has added one new project to his schedule, as he's replaced Hugh Jackman in the thriller Drive.

Ryan Gosling Spreads the Love Before Valentine's Day

Ryan Gosling stepped out for lunch at Hugo's in LA yesterday, though he took a break from his meal to smile and wave to a passing friend through the window. It was a low key afternoon for Ryan after his big Tuesday night out on the town, as he toasted Inglourious Basterds's eight Oscar nominations at a star-studded party hosted by Quentin Tarantino. It's always a treat to see Ryan out in his city, and after catching his beautiful movie with Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine, at Sundance, it makes us dream of seeing the duo in a romantic comedy too.
