PopUK's New Release Roundup!

It's time to let you know all the new releases that I recommend this week! First up I have a couple of DVDs for you - Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla came out yesterday and I very much enjoyed this fun-filled crime caper. It has some amusing performances in it, especially from Gerard Butler and face to watch Tom Hardy.

I also recommend The House Bunny for some laugh out loud moments, and I have to admit I was very skeptical of it before I watched it. Anna Faris makes the Playboy bunny of the title likeable and amusing - it's a comedy in the same vein as Legally Blonde - though Colin Hanks is an uninspiring love interest for her. There's amusing support from the sorority girls she takes under her wing, including Kat Dennings, Emma Stone, American Idol's Katharine McPhee and Rumer Willis.

I'll be telling you all about The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button in my review on Friday, but films also worth checking out at the cinema this weekend include animated movie Bolt, a cavalcade of stars including Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore in He's Just Not That Into You, or if you fancy something a little more serious you could go and see Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt.

Album releases this week include Which Bitch by The View - you can click on the album name to preview all the tracks! Welsh songstress Jem has her album Down To Earth available to download this week, and if you're looking for something a little different or what to discover some new artists, then check out Rough Trade's Counter Culture 2008 which includes tracks from Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, as well as bands you might not have heard of. If you want some new singles to download, then Coldplay's "Life In Technicolour II" is released this week, as is Daniel Merriweather's "Change" and the awesome Of Montreal's uplifting "An Eluardian Instance".

RocknRolla: Slow to Build With a Rockin' Finish

RocknRolla is extremely similar in tone and format to director Guy Ritchie's other films, and I must say I'm starting to think that his movies are only as good as the actors in them. Snatch is a good ensemble piece overall, but the most memorable parts are due to standout performances by actors like Brad Pitt and Alan Ford. Though not as good a film as Snatch, RocknRolla similarly benefits from some fine performers, in this case Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong, and Toby Kebbell, among other members of the extensive cast in this convoluted story.

And by convoluted I mean I'm not sure I can even get into the plot here without writing another six paragraphs or so. Suffice to say there are a couple high-level criminal guys (played by Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong and others), a resourceful accountant (Thandie Newton), a few bumbling low-level thugs (Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy), and a druggie rock star, Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell) all chasing around large amounts of money and/or a beloved painting. There are a lot of men behaving badly because they had cruel fathers. There's a good amount of violence (often paired with great music) and torture mixed with dry, dark humor. It's funny and exciting - but not consistently so. For more on what I mean, read more.

The beginning is slow to build, with tons of details to take in at once, and sometimes the story is downright uninteresting. But the ending is exciting enough to make you forget the entire hour or so that came before it. Maybe that's Ritchie's shtick: Saving the best, most memorable parts for last so you're left with the impression that it was a great movie.

So, is it worth it? That depends. If you haven't liked any of Ritchie's stuff in the past, this movie will definitely not change your opinion. If you've never seen his movies, start with Snatch and make RocknRolla last on the list. And for any fan of his, RocknRolla is worth it for the helluva good ride we get to take in the last third or so of the movie.

Oh, also: We get a brief glimpse of Gerard Butler's bare backside. So. There's that.

Gerard, Thandie, and Idris RocknRoll Their Way to LA

Thandie Newton was joined by costars Idris Elba and Gerard Butler last night for the LA premiere of RocknRolla. They've been all over to promote the film, from Canada to the UK, and it's finally opening to limited release in the US on Friday. Director Guy Ritchie missed this one, but the cast seems to have gotten pretty close after all that traveling - Thandie and Gerard even shared a few kisses on the red carpet. Gerard's romance with Jennifer Aniston may have ended up being nothing, but even happily married Thandie seemed to enjoy his charming company.

Sugar Bits - Estelle Nominated For Five MOBO Awards

Estelle has been nominated for five MOBO Awards including those for Best UK Female, Song and Video. The ceremony will take place in October and will be hosted by Mel B. - ITN

RocknRolla has debuted at number one in the UK box office, Mamma Mia is number two and new entry The Duchess is in third. - BBC

It's been revealed Cheryl Cole has links with a contestant she voted through to boot camp on The X Factor. Bosses at the programme were aware they knew each other, but it wasn't mentioned on Saturday night's show. - Mirror

Jeremy Piven Wants to be the "Jewish Michael Phelps"

After walking the red carpet in London, the RocknRolla crew flew over to Canada for their Toronto Film Festival premiere last night. The movie got a good review from PopSugar UK, and the cast looked like they were having a blast messing around with each other. After chatting with Jeremy at the Entourage premiere, we know he loves to joke around, talking about his Broadway debut and what is coming up for Ari in the new season. Here's more from what he told us on Wednesday night:

On Entourage: "I think this particular dynamic is really interesting because its a bunch of guys with a NY sensibility, where they speak the truth to each other as they know it, and it can be tough love at times and really really brutal, but no matter what their status is they are going to give it to you straight and I think there’s something very endearing about that."
On filming in NYC: "I love it. I wish I could film everything here to be honest with you. I’m actually going to start rehearsing on Monday. I’m doing Broadway around the corner. I’m doing Speed-the-Plow. It’s basically my Olympics. I’m doing eight shows a week and I just want to be the Jewish Michael Phelps."
On Ari changing in the upcoming season: "I think that the audience will see other sides to him that I’ve always thought existed - the complete dedication and love for his family . . . the fact that when he takes mushrooms in the desert and is peaking. He’s completely lost and without Lloyd he’ll never make it home. So that happens and that’s one of the greatest moments I’ve ever been able to play in my life. I’ve done a great deal of research."

While Jeremy called his Broadway experience "the role of a lifetime," we can't wait to see him back playing Ari alongside the boys when Entourage returns on Sunday.

Get Ready For a RocknRolla Ride

It's that time people: Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla is finally rocking and rolling its way to a cinema near you.

As I said in my review of the film yesterday, it's a great movie packed full of energetic, charming and funny performances.

I brought you all the pictures and gossip from the film's premiere on Tuesday, and as a little treat to get you in the mood for the movie's release today, here's video footage from the red carpet.

Pop Preview: RocknRolla

Guy Ritchie has rolled out his tried and tested (and hugely enjoyable) gangster crime caper formula for his latest offering, RocknRolla.

Like Lock Stock and Snatch before, RocknRolla brings the lives of London's criminals together in a funny, well-acted and entertaining action flick.

It's not just the capital's head mobster (Tom Wilkinson) and right hand man (Mark Strong) who take notice when a Russian billionaire (Karel Roden) arrives in town looking to make a big money land deal; a corrupt councillor (Jimi Mistry), plotting accountant (Thandie Newton), and underworld gang The Wild Bunch (Gerard Butler, Idris Elba and Tom Hardy) all want in on the big bucks too.

Throw in a "dead" junkie rock star (Toby Kebbell) and his American agents (Ludacris and Jeremy Piven) and you'll get an idea of the quality of the ensemble cast. There's plenty of eye candy, but it's the kind of film which men and women will enjoy.

It isn't as intricately plotted as the earlier films, but thanks to the stellar cast (who were all in attendance at the world premiere earlier this week) the myriad characters keep you interested. The roles are also more diverse than previous offerings, but this is still a male-dominated film and Thandie Newton has a disappointingly narrow part. Having said that, I don't watch a Guy Ritchie film expecting an exploration of women's psyches, and the relationships between the men provide some welcome surprises.

I chose RocknRolla as one of my September must haves and if you liked Lock Stock and Snatch then I'd definitely recommend it to you. If you're not a fan of those movies then it'd be best to steer clear, as you won't get anything particularly different.

There's a lot riding on RocknRolla for Guy Ritchie, following the critically panned Swept Away and Revolver, and as far as I'm concerned he's proven his filmmaking skills again. Bring on that sequel!

Whose RocknRolla Look Do You Prefer?

The Rock (n Rolla) gals were out in full force for the premiere of Guy Richie's new film, last night. Madonna went for an all-out blonde bombshell look with wavy hair and super-long lashes, actress Thandie Newton looked smouldering, sporting glossy hair, a rose lip colour and shimmery eye shadow - and Coco Sumner opted for a laid-back, youthful look with glowing skin, minimal makeup and messy hair. It's a tough choice, but whose beauty look do you prefer?
