Movie Preview: Robin Williams in World's Greatest Dad

I have a love/hate relationship with Robin Williams' movies. In films like Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society, he brings a certain brilliant sincerity to his roles, which I admire and find so entertaining to watch. On the other hand, I've come to dread his over-the-top, cringe-worthy antics in cheesy comedies like License to Wed.

I'm happy to report that Williams's role in the upcoming movie World's Greatest Dad falls into the category of performances I think I can get behind. Williams stars as Lance Clayton, teacher of poetry, aspiring writer, and father of a typically bratty teenager. At first, Lance seems like a dad who has given up trying to connect to his son, but as the trailer goes on we see that Lance has his own brand of snark and retorts for his son's wisecracks. Eventually, a freak accident leads to Lance's big break, and he owes all of his success to his relationship with his son. The movie looks darkly funny if not a bit sad, but I'm definitely interested in seeing if Williams shines as well in the film as he does in the preview. Robin Williams is bringing his comedy act back to HBO this Fall, taping his first stand-up special for the network in seven years and his fourth HBO special overall. He's just the latest comedian to book a special on HBO, which has long been a showcase for comedians including George Carlin, Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Dana Carvey, and many more. Comedy Central has also been a big outlet for stand-up over the years with its Comedy Central Presents series. I'm wondering: Do you like watching stand-up specials on TV? Does it depend on the comedian? Or do you think this kind of thing is best suited to live shows?

Ben and Owen Team Up For Another Night at the Museum

The stars of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian reunited on the red carpet last night for the premiere at the National Air and Space Museum in DC. Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, and Owen Wilson took their characters to Washington this time around, with Amy Adams adding a feminine touch to the cast. Last night Owen dished about how much fun it is to make movies with his longtime buddy Ben, saying, "It's unbelievable. This is like I think the 10th movie that we've worked on together. And then we're working on another one too coming up. Who knew way back when, when I was in The Cable Guy, that that was gonna lead to us kind of teaming up and being in the same movies so much." We'll get to see if Ben and Owen still have that box office magic when the movie hits theaters next Friday.

Prince Charles's Rainforest Campaign Video

Prince Charles launched a global awareness campaign for The Prince's Rainforests Project today, with a video starring school children from across the world as well as famous faces. Daniel Craig, Pele, Robin Williams, Harrison Ford, Joss Stone, Dalai Lama, Kermit the Frog and Charles's own sons, William and Harry, all add their voices to the campaign. This is the first YouTube video from Prince Charles, and his spokesman commented: "The Prince is not necessarily someone who is a regular user of the internet. Cheryl Cole reportedly "tore into" Ashley on a phone call from Kilimanjaro, following his drunk and disorderly arrest. She was angry because he had promised not to go clubbing with teammates while she was away. - Mirror
Razorlight's drummer, Andy Burrows, has left the band after allegedly arguing with frontman Johnny Borrell during a recent trip to the US. They have already hired a replacement, David "Skully" Sullivan-Kaplan.- The Sun
Vince Vaughn is engaged to estate agent Kyla Weber, her father has confirmed. Vince apparently proposed on Valentine’s Day. - Montreal Gazette
Matthew Settle, who plays Rufus on Gossip Girl and his wife have welcomed an 8 lbs 11 oz daughter, whom they have named Aven Angelica. - People
Robin Williams has postponed the remaining shows on his stand-up tour to have heart surgery for an aortic valve replacement. The comedian cancelled four shows in Florida this week after experiencing shortness of breath, and hopes to restart the tour in the autumn. Get well soon Robin. - BBC

Sundance Brings Welcome Faces and Exciting New Movies

Some of our favorite rarely-seen famous faces were out at Sundance Film Festival yesterday. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt premiered their anticipated – and completely precious looking - romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor continued to hit up the parties in support of I Love You Phillip Morris. It wasn't all movie veterans - relative newbie John Krasinski debuted Brief Interviews with Hideous Men at the festival while Kristen Stewart hit a red carpet that wasn't for Twilight - check out all the Sundance news here. With so many celebrities in Park City and DC for the inauguration, LA must be pretty quiet this week.

Us Brits Are Amongst the American People's Choice!

Stars of the big and small screen got glam for the People's Choice Awards in LA last night. Carrie Underwood won three awards, and Paris Hilton and Jewel won me over with their pretty dresses. Nominees announcer Joshua Jackson wasn't in attendance unfortunately, but there were lots of other gorgeous guys to feast our eyes on.

Our very own Christian Bale picked up a couple of gongs thanks to The Dark Knight's huge success. Other British winners included Favourite Male TV Star Hugh Laurie, and Paul Bettany whose film The Secret Life of Bees picked up two gongs, while Gavin Rossdale presented Kate Hudson with her award. My girl Buzz has got the full winners list, Fab and Bella have polls on all the fashion and beauty looks, and BellaUK wants to know whose nude lips do you like the most?

Robin Williams is returning to the UK stage for the first time in 25 years to celebrate Prince Charles’s 60th birthday in a one-off show entitled We Are Not Amused, which also stars John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson. The show will take place at London’s New Wimbeldon Theatre on November 12 and will be televised by ITV, with ticket sale profits going to the Prince’s Trust. Tickets go on sale today. - The Times
