"The Real World" Heads to Sydney

For its 19th season - wow, has it been that long? - MTV's "The Real World" is heading to Sydney, Australia. Having already invaded many exotic (Key West, Hawaii) and not-so-exotic (Denver) locales in the States, the show is going abroad for the third time in its history (London and Paris were first).

I recently visited Sydney and was blown away but what an exciting, hip and beautiful city it is. In fact, the setting is almost - almost - enough to make me excited about "The Real World" again. After all, Sydney has many things to offer that should make for excellent "Real World" viewing, including:

24-hour bars.

Hot lifeguards.

Very nice, patient people who speak English.

Numerous opportunities for very bad sunburns.

Extremely confusing urban planning.

The treacherous Sydney Harbor Bridge Climb. (With luck, this will make a housemate cry.)

Giant bats with meter-wide wingspans. That's right: giant bats.

The Sydney season will start filming in a matter of weeks and is set to premiere sometime in late 2007.

The Real World: IKEA

How many times have we heard The Real World intro? Well, the folks who made this parody decided they needed to inject something new into the stale formula. It goes something like this: "Five strangers were picked to live in <strike>a house</strike> IKEA, <strike>work together</strike> bug people who work there who have no idea these folks are pretending to live there, and have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite, and start getting <strike>real</strike> surreal. <strike>The Real World</strike> The Real World: IKEA."

"The Real World" Going Green

Somehow, I totally missed this news from a few weeks ago that the next "Real World" house will be a solar-powered green dwelling. According to Broadcasting and Cable, the 20th season of the reality show will be set in Hollywood and have the roomies living in an eco-friendly house, complete with solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and sustainable materials. Here are some details from the article:

According to MTV, the show will “introduce today’s youth to the ways in which they can incorporate environmentally friendly household items and make eco-friendly lifestyle choices, as seen on The Real World, into their everyday lives.”

In my humble opinion, "The Real World" has been pretty worthless over the past few years and not exactly setting a noble example for America's youth. So I am glad to see MTV trying to use its powers to do some good. I wonder if the green theme will affect the casting too. What do you guys think about the idea?

The Atlas of the Real World Maps Out Demographic Importance

The Telegraph recently featured The Atlas of the Real World: Mapping the Way We Live, which uses software to illustrate countries around the world, not by their land size, but by their demographic rank on a range of subjects. The size of each country represents its land mass in proportion to that of the others.

The atlas depicts a whole assortment of topics - from tourist destinations, alcohol consumption, wealth in the year one versus wealth in 1990. I was intrigued by the images above, which show (1) the increase in emissions of carbon dioxide and (2) the decrease in emissions of carbon dioxide. Between 1980 and 2000, nearly three-quarters of all territories saw an increase in carbon dioxide emissions with China, the United States, and India leading the pack. Between 1980 and 2000, 28 percent of countries reduced their emissions. Almost half of reductions were made in territories of the former Soviet Union, while Germany, Poland, and France also made substantial cuts.

Body Worlds: Made For and From Real People

Body Worlds is an anatomical art exhibition of real human bodies. It was created by Gunther von Hagen, using his invention of Plastination. It's a process that makes it possible to preserve tissues and organs of the body, by stopping it from decomposing. All of the people in these exhibits were once alive, and chose to donate their bodies to science. Or in this case - to ART.

The bodies are positioned in real life activities like riding a horse, sitting at a desk and playing basketball. It allows you to see the different anatomical features.

The exhibit's aim is not to be a big gross out, but to educate the public about the human body and its functions. It sounds a little bit creepy, but I am totally intrigued.

Want to check it out? Find out where the current exhibitions are.

The Cookie Monster made news a few months back when he announced that "A cookie is a sometimes food." Say what?! The Cookie Monster, whose identity is defined by his unrestrained love for sweet cookie goodness, is cutting his sugar, counting his calories, and watching his intake? Yes, indeed. Must we really take the fun out of children's television? If so, here's what the other "Sesame Street" characters may have in store for us...

The shelter and design editor for magazines like Gotham, Hamptons, and LA Confidential, and the host of Plum Homes With Sue Hostetler on Plum TV (which "targets the most active, influential, and educated audience in the world"), Hostetler has tapped her cronies for tours of their unique and luxe urban dwellings.

The American dream of retiring to the pool and tennis courts in your countryside home is squashed by this book, which showcases a range of sprawling, real-life city homes. Each has an original sense of style, a warmth that defies traditional conceptions of "cold urban modernism," spectacular views, and in several cases, an outdoor space complete with a pool or lush garden. Many of the homes were created, not surprisingly, by converting former warehouses or other nonresidential buildings, or combining apartments.

Hillary Talks Sexism, Obama's Job Offer, and Mad Men to Vogue

Hillary Clinton finally sat down for a long-overdue Vogue interview. She offended editor Anna Wintour during the primaries by turning down the fashion mag out fear of looking "too feminine." And though she won't be on the December cover, the article is as substantial and satisfying as a cover story.

From night swimming alone to her favorite shows (Mad Men!), we see a side of Madame Secretary that all the vetting in the world would not unearth. See some of what she had to say below.

On visiting countries as a high-ranking female: "You can go to some countries and there's not a woman in the room. They don't even make the effort to give me the token woman minister. . . . And in lots of African countries the honorific for women is 'Mama.' So I had lots of people say to me, 'Mama, what about this; Mama, what about that?'"

On President Obama's job offer: "I was stunned after the election when President Obama asked me to consider this. . . . I really was very unconvinced. I did not think it was the right thing to do. I didn't want to do it. I just really had a lot of doubts, and I kept suggesting other people: Well, how about this person! How about that person! This one would be really good! But then a friend of mine called me and basically said, 'How would you have felt if you'd been elected and you'd called him and asked him to do this?' And that really made a big impression on me. How do you say no? And so . . . I said yes. And here I am."

On Mad Men: "That's how it was! That's why the women's-liberation movement was so shocking. It was like news from outer space"

See what else she had to say after the jump.
