Agora - See It or Skip It?

Movie Preview: Rachel Weisz in Agora

The story being told in Agora is so interesting, it would be a shame if the movie itself turns out to be lame, but so far I feel kind of lukewarm about the trailer. The film is set in Roman Egypt in the fourth century A.D. and stars Rachel Weisz as "astrologer-philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, who fights to save the collected wisdom of the ancient world. Her slave Davus ([Max] Minghella) is torn between his love for his mistress and the possibility of gaining his freedom by joining the rising tide of Christianity."

I adore Rachel Weisz and I hope this movie turns out to be the epic, dramatic tale it's striving to be. I've liked some of director Alejandro Amenábar's previous projects, like Abre los ojos (of which Vanilla Sky is an English-language adaptation), so maybe Agora will be really cool. The Lovely Bones - See It or Skip It?

The Lovely Bones is a new movie based on the popular and acclaimed novel by Alice Sebold about Susie Salmon (played by Saoirse Ronan), a teenager who's murdered and the narrates the tale of her family trying to deal with the consequences and search for justice. Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg star as her parents, with Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci also appearing in the film. Peter Jackson directs, and the film is due to be released in January 2010, so check out the trailer and let me know - will you see it or skip it?

Movie Preview: Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones

If you've read the book The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, you'll know that it's a heartwrenching, mysterious tale about family, death - and whatever comes after death. Peter Jackson's film adaptation has been a point of discussion ever since it was announced over two years ago, from the casting choices to the question of how to adapt a story like this, which regularly blurs the line between reality and the supernatural. Jackson's 1994 movie Heavenly Creatures does this very thing as well, which made him a good choice for this particular challenge.

The new trailer for the film, which opens Dec. 11, starts out tender and soft before building to a tense and chilling crescendo. Atonement's Saoirse Ronan plays Susie Salmon, a young teen who narrates the story after she's been murdered. She observes her family as they try to piece together what happened to her, and it's all a big tangle of scariness, sadness, and aching sweetness. To watch the trailer, click here.

Does a Big Name Star Draw You to the Theatre?

Big name stars continue to tread the boards in the West End, and yesterday saw the press night of A Streetcar Named Desire starring an impressive Rachel Weisz alongside Ruth Wilson and Elliot Cowan, as well as the cast change of Calendar Girls, featuring Jack Ryder, Jerry Hall, June Brown, Jill Halfpenny and Gemma Atkinson. Jude Law continued to get mobbed after his performance in Hamlet last night, with fans queueing from 4am to get tickets. The growing involvement of A-list actors in stage productions has encouraged younger audiences to theatres and increased press coverage too. There is no denying that actors need a wide range of facial expressions to practice their crafts. Some celebrities have admitted to using the treatment (see parts one and two of my quizzes), while others are quite vocal about shunning the needle. The latest to give it the thumbs-down is actress Rachel Weisz, who was quoted in August's Harper's Bazaar UK:

It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen . . . Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?

The pressure of looking ageless often comes with the territory of an acting career. But do you think it's OK for actors to get a little Botox here and there, or is Rachel right on this one?

2009 Cannes Film Festival: Rachel Weisz

There has to be at least one Valentino gown at the Cannes Film Festival. Brunette beauty Rachel Weisz attended the Agora premiere in an emerald green chiffon gown. If you look closer, it's gradient, getting darker - and more dramatic - toward the bottom. If it weren't for this ombre treatment, the dress would be too drab for my taste. She's dripping in Cartier jewels - art deco chandelier earrings and a diamond pave Trinity bracelet. Is she Cannes worthy?
