Public Enemies: Depp Shines Through a Shower of Bullets

The reason to see Public Enemies is the same as the reason to see any Johnny Depp movie: Johnny Depp. The story is engaging enough - there's plenty of sputtering machine gun shoot-outs and exciting escape plans and dashes of romance - but the actual enjoyment of watching this movie comes from Johnny Depp in a role he's naturally gifted at playing: the dark, mysterious rebel.

Depp plays John Dillinger, a bank robber who has gained a certain celebrity status with the public. His charm and calm cleverness have made him and his gang quite rich and have kept him from being permanently captured. Soon, however, J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) focuses his attention on Dillinger, his "Public Enemy No. 1." Hoping to use Dillinger's capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force, Hoover puts his dashing agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) on the case. The majority of the movie is a back-and-forth dance with Purvis pursuing Dillinger and Dillinger eluding Purvis's grasp. Consistently thwarted by the sly criminal, Purvis's desperation to catch Dillinger leads to some extreme measures. Violence, gunfire, and bloodshed ensue as Purvis and his team start to close in on their enemy. For more of my thoughts on the movie, read more.

It's mind-boggling to see how relatively easy it is for Dillinger and his gang to pull off these crimes. In our era of constant surveillance and advanced technology, these guys wouldn't get three feet without someone snapping a picture or video with a camera phone. The movie is set during a more trusting time period, and one that is - for better or worse - far behind us. At the same time, we may have more in common with that era than we think. As we experience a recession, we watch a story in which the protagonist robs banks in the midst of the Great Depression - should we be rooting for this guy? Depp makes us want to, that's for sure, but what with all the bloodshed, it's hard to always think that what Dillinger's doing is cool. Public Enemies actually makes us think about this stuff, and making us think is more than most of the big Summer movies can boast.

The movie also features good performances by an impressive cast, with Marion Cotillard standing out as Dillinger's lady love, Billie Frechette. She is perfectly paired with Depp, her bright eyes and lively charisma nicely complementing Depp's dark and intense steadiness. The two make a sexy duo and their scenes together are some of my favorite of the whole movie. They're both soulful actors, interested more in substance than style. Some scenes that don't include either of these actors are all shiny cars, slicked-back hair, and terrible accents, making me yearn for Depp or Cotillard to be back on screen.

The actual filmmaking, however, made me queasy. I know Michael Mann is an intense director but I hate the herky-jerky camerawork and the random close-ups on things in this movie. The other distracting element is the actors' makeup, their faces clay-like, their lips bright pink. It's hard to become immersed in this world when the streaks of blush constantly remind us that this is all make-believe. But aside from these things, the film overall is an intriguing thrill-ride with a little bit of heart and the sharp, intelligent Johnny Depp leading us through it.

Johnny Joins Marion In London For Public Enemies Premiere

Back in May we took a look at the trailer for new movie Public Enemies, starring the gorgeous Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard and Christian Bale, and last night London played host to the European premiere of the movie. Directed by Michael Mann, it's a 1930s gangster flick based on a true story, and fans were out in force last night to get a glimpse at the star of it all, Johnny. Other celebs attending included New Moon's Jamie Campbell Bower, Amelle Berrabah, and The Feeling, but will you go and see it when it comes out on Friday?

Johnny Depp Is Who He Wants to Be

Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard looked glamorous at the Public Enemies premiere in London earlier today. Over the weekend he was turning heads in NYC but now he's back to promoting his new film. Johnny recently spoke about why the movie is relevant in our current economy and also discussed staying true to himself. Here's more:

On his character robbing banks: "Back then the banks were the enemies. We're learning today that they've been the enemies yet again. So when it comes to Dillinger, isn't it somehow nice to see the underdog kind of take control, even if it was another time?"
On what's important to him: "My kiddies are getting bigger. My daughter's 10 and my boy's 7. The greatest thing is just the sort of beauty of watching my kids grow up and become little adults."
On his advice about growing up: "Remember that you make your own reality. You don't have to stay in a little shell that was hammered out for you from childhood. We're all conditioned to live the way our parents want us to live, and that turns people into serial killers sometimes. At a certain point you have to come out and live your life the way you want to live it. I had to fight to retain my individuality. I'd get agents who'd say, 'Well, what are you fighting against? Why are you going against the grain?' But I knew that if I continued on in the way that they wanted me to, it was death. It's just a question of standing straight and saying, 'No. I'm not going to be what you want me to be. I'm going to be what I want to be.'"

Johnny Depp Looks Delicious On His Way To Letterman

Johnny Depp is promoting his new movie Public Enemies at the moment and made an appearance on David Letterman's talkshow last night to talk about it. He started off by discussing his two children, saying they're out of their "tiny drunk" phase, and how he fears for the boys who are lining up to take out his daughter. As always, he comes across as a charming, likeable guy who admits to not seeing his own movies, saying once he's finished acting it's really "none of his business". Johnny says he "really doesn't like watching" himself, but he doesn't need to worry about that, there are plenty of people - including me - who are more than happy to watch him onscreen! Sweet Johnny, Christian and Marion Take Public Enemies to LA

Johnny Depp wore his usual blue sunglasses and sexy unbuttoned shirt at the LA premiere of Public Enemies last night. He was without Vanessa, but his costar Christian Bale had his wife Sibi on his arm. The boys were joined by their glamorous leading lady in the movie, Marion Cotillard. Their highly-anticipated holiday weekend movie hits theaters next week but we're also already getting an idea of upcoming projects - or not - for both Johnny and Christian. This week we got a peek at Johnny and his costars in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland masterpiece while Christian hinted there might not be another Batman coming our way.

Sexy Depp and Bale Are Public Enemies in Chicago

Johnny Depp looked dapper all dressed up in pinstripes with his costar Christian Bale at the Public Enemies premiere in Chicago last night. Marion Cotillard looked lovely in a summery pink dress while Christian's wife Sibi kept it simple in black. Johnny stopped to sign autographs for his very enthusiastic and screaming fans in the city where the bank robber and main character, John Dillenger, did his damage. As with all of Depp's roles, he did a lot of research and spoke about his respect for the criminal character he'll be promoting for the next few weeks. This is one of the Summer blockbusters we've been counting down the release for, how about you?

Here's a movie I am definitely looking forward to - Johnny Depp teams up with Christian Bale for Public Enemies, released in the UK on July 3. Delicious Johnny plays legendary 1930s bank robber John Dillenger, Christian costars as the FBI's top agent Melvin Purvis, and Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum and Billy Crudup also feature in the star studded film from director Michael Mann. Movie Preview: Public Enemies

Stuff that we probably could have predicted about the trailer for Michael Mann's gangster movie, Public Enemies: This film will be intense, Johnny Depp is an awesome actor, and this cast overall is absolutely gorgeous (Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard? Yes, please). Michael Mann has proven that he works quite well with crime/action movies and Public Enemies is, of course, all crime and a lot of action. The trailer alone got my blood pumping.

As the story description goes, "the Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s." Depp plays Dillinger, Channing Tatum is Pretty Boy Floyd and Stephen Graham plays Baby Face Nelson. Bale plays top FBI agent Melvin Purvis while Cotillard is Dillinger's lady, Billie Frechette.

Public Enemies opens July 1. Though the story is dark, something about this trailer just makes me grin. You can check it out and tell me what you think if you read more.

Can You Spot the Real-Life Johnny Depp?

Johnny Depp was showing off some quirky outfits both on and off the set of Public Enemies in LA yesterday. When he wasn't on camera, Johnny was clean shaven but showing off that armful of tattoos with one of his standard flannels around his waist. Back into character, he sported a neon tie and gross 'stache - seems a silly departure from the gangster wardrobe we've been getting a few sneak peeks at. He's still pretty hot either way, but which Johnny do you prefer?
