Hollywood Ladies Come Out to Support GQ's Men of the Year

The Chateau Marmont hosted GQ's Men of the Year Awards last night in LA. A few of the magazine's honorees, including Zach Galifianakis, Tom Ford, and Neil Patrick Harris joined forces with starlets like Olivia Wilde and AnnaLynne McCord. January Jones hit the carpet alongside Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter as Alexander Skarsgard, who won a "Man Who Saved HBO" award, went from LAX to the bash - click here to check out the full list of winners.

Alexander stayed close to rumored girlfriend Kate Bosworth, despite recent reports of her being linked to other guys. Sarah Silverman, meanwhile, was there to keep Zach company as his fellow funny man Russell Brand took a night off from romancing Katy Perry to mingle with Quentin Tarantino. Lindsay Lohan also turned up for the event while drama with her father seems to finally be cooling off.

Invictus: See It or Skip It?

The trailer for Clint Eastwood's Invictus has been released, and it's got me excited for the film. It tells the true story of the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship, which saw newly elected Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) team up with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to unite the country. It's due out in the UK on 5 February 2010, so check out the trailer below and vote to let me know: will you see it or skip it?

Movie Preview: Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman in Invictus

Hope you haven't OD'd on Matt Damon yet! Just yesterday I showed you a preview of his upcoming Jason Bourne-esque action flick, Green Zone and today we get a peek at Invictus. In the upcoming film from Clint Eastwood, Damon stars as a Francois Pienaar, real-life member of South Africa's rugby team who's summoned by Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) to rally support in the country and unite the racial divide.

I love Matt Damon, but I'm actually more interested in Freeman's performance in Invictus. It looks like one well-done biopic, and it's obviously Freeman's Oscar film - although I'm sure Damon doing an accent could translate into a nomination for him around awards time, too. (Not to mention that many things Eastwood touches turn to Oscar nods).

Warning: If cheering crowd scenes and African singing often play with your emotions, you may get goose bumps while watching this preview. Check it out, and tell me what you think when you read more.

Beyonce, Morgan and Barbra Join Bushes at the White House

George and Laura Bush were gracious hosts one more time in their home stretch at the White House last night for the annual Kennedy Center Honors gala. Barbra Streisand, who played nice and even hugged G. W. Bush at the event despite her personal feelings towards the outbound president, Morgan Freeman and Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who were among the honorees. They were joined by political heavyweights Condoleezza Rice, Dick Cheney, the Bush family and more. Beyonce lit up the red carpet in her gown before taking the stage to sing "The Way We Were" while Jack Black managed to make the formal red carpet a little more fun. Congrats to all the honorees - the event airs on CBS December 30.

Sugar Bits - MK's Lawyer Issues a Statement Regarding Heath Investigation

In response to the rumors surrounding her request for immunity from the FBI, Mary-Kate Olsen's lawyer released a statement saying she had "nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger's home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them," and calling descriptions of the government inquiry of MK "incomplete and inaccurate." - People

Sugar Bits - Morgan Freeman in Serious Car Accident

Morgan Freeman was involved in a car accident last night in Mississippi. He was driving when he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, losing control and causing his car to roll over three times. He and an unidentified female passenger were airlifted to a hospital in Memphis. A source says he is sitting up and talking. - TMZ
Christina Applegate has been diagnosed with a non-life threatening form of breast cancer and is being treated with the expectation of a full recovery. - E! Online

The Dark Knight – No Joke, It's Thrilling and Deliciously Dark

If you haven't already booked your tickets for this week's UK opening of The Dark Knight then I urge you to do so, because I'm going to add my voice to the chorus shouting that this film is something special. Just so you know my stance on these movies, I didn't think that Batman Begins was anything more than a competent film, and – though the trailers for this one were fantastic – with the running time at over two and a half hours I was worried it would be patchy. It wasn't. At all. I spent the entire 152 minutes on the edge of my seat, riveted by the thrilling joyride playing out onscreen.

Christopher Nolan has set a darker mood than before – much darker – corruption and evil spreads to many unexpected places, and as the plot weaves beautifully around the handful of complicated lead characters, it gets saturated with the chaos that reflects The Joker's reason for being.

In my opinion there isn't a bad, or even just passable, performance among the lead characters. Aaron Eckhart is a great addition to the cast as Harvey Dent, and his journey epitomises the good vs evil theme that's typical in this kind of film – the good thing about it in this movie is that it's nowhere near clear cut. There's one standout scene between Dent and The Joker which just underscores this beautifully – the struggle between doing what's right or just giving in to everything that's wrong in a desperate moment.

Maggie Gyllenhaal breathes much-needed life into the character of Rachel Dawes, and erases all memories of Katie Holmes' part in 'Begins'. She brings a subtle strength and believability that I sorely missed in Holmes' take on Batman's love interest. Christian Bale is back as Batman, slipping from suave rich guy to his more likable persona with ease and style. Just like last time, a constant highlight is Bruce Wayne's easy rapport with Alfred (played by living legend Michael Caine) whose sarcastic, well-timed humour brings many brief pinpricks of lightness into the dark, dark tone of the movie. The great Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman also return with their amiable – and key – characters, Lieutenant Gordon and Lucius Fox.

There's one character that holds all the aces in the pack though, and that is The Joker. With a maniacal laugh, a haunting voice and a face you'll never scrub out of your mind, The Joker is a work of villainous art. From the opening heist, then his memorable magic trick with a pencil to the way he constantly tops his previous shocking stunt with another, The Joker is a nervous bundle of energy that delights in bringing chaos to all, including himself. Of course, the man behind the masterpiece – Heath Ledger – is sadly no longer with us. But he has created a character that will live on and on.

With a flick of his tongue, a roll of his eyes and an intimidating insane intensity you could never imagine coming from a man wearing make-up, Heath absolutely transformed himself for this role. He is The Joker, and any glimmer of recognisable Heath has been erased. He's altered all his attributes – his gait, his laugh, his voice – then added more nervous tics than should be believable (but actually work) to become him. The Joker is the perfect villain, with an ever-changing backstory (depending on how he feels) and a violent hate for plans and order, he sticks two fingers up at our constant search for reasons and meaning behind terrorism and wrongdoing. He's unsettling, he's scary, he's off his rocker and he's absolutely electric to watch.

The script really is fantastic – mixing awesome, memorable lines easily with dark threats and moments of humour within a story that holds every nerve ending in your body in suspense, just waiting for the next twist or turn. The cityscapes Batman flies through are beautiful, the technology and gadgets are fab (the Batbike is awesome), the action, stunts and fights are thrilling and the acting is superb. That's just a few of the reasons I'm giving this movie five stars, as I could wax lyrical about this movie for much longer.

Go and see this film – while The Wackness is still my indie favourite, The Dark Knight is the blockbuster movie of the summer.
