Lars and the Real Girl Director Teams Up With Gosling Again

Director Craig Gillespie and Ryan Gosling will combine their talents once more, and no, not for a Lars and the Real Girl sequel.

Titled The Dallas Buyers Club, the movie follows an inspiring true story. Variety has more:

Dallas Buyers Club is the true story of Ron Woodroof, a tough Texas electrician who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 and given six months to live. Frustrated with the lack of available medical options and unwilling to accept a death sentence, Woodroof found a lifeline using alternative drugs and created a lucrative smuggling business that made those drugs available to AIDS patients. Woodroof died in 1992.

If this film ends up with even an inkling of the aching poignancy of Lars and the Real Girl, I am all about it. I can't wait to see Gosling show us more of the dramatic chops we know he has. I anticipate my heart breaking from this film but with this team, I welcome it. You?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Juno
Yes, the day has come. Ladies and gentlemen, Juno is now available to rent or own. Me? I'll own this one because before all the hype and all the Oscar nods (and win), I went to a little movie that warmed my heart and cracked me up, and I knew then that I'd want to take it home and love it forever.

Juno stars Ellen Page, a Minnesota teenager who grows up quickly when she accidentally gets pregnant. The film is just littered with endearing performances from Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Allison Janney, J.K. Simmons and Jennifer Garner, but some would argue the real star of the film is the snappy script written by Diablo Cody (one of the few screenplay writers to ever become a household name, thanks to this little movie).

The two-disc special edition is loaded with extras for anyone looking to squeeze more goodness out of it. There's audio commentary by director Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody, a gag reel, screen tests (can you imagine Michael Cera doing one of these? So cute!), and a couple of featurettes including one titled, "Cast & Crew Jam."

Lars and the Real Girl
Lars and the Real Girl is a refreshing take on the age-old subject of love. The very talented Ryan Gosling stars as Lars, a man who falls in love with a blow-up doll. He falls so freely into his delusion that he begins to insist that everyone in his life treat the doll as his girlfriend and call her "Bianca." One of the most endearing movies of 2007, it's a quirky tale about embracing life, as scary as it can seem, and accepting the good with the bad lest it all pass you by. The film also stars Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer, Kelli Garner and Paul Schneider.

Special features include deleted scenes and a featurette titled, "The Real Story of Lars and the Real Girl."

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Here is a crime melodrama that received some high critical praise but little attention otherwise. Sometimes that's the best kind of weekend rental treasure - something you (and your friend/date/better half) haven't seen before that's actually really good. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke and Marisa Tomei and follows two brothers who, as IMDB puts it, "conspire to pull off the perfect, victimless crime. No guns, no violence, no problem. But when an accomplice ignores the rules and crosses the line, his actions trigger a series of events in which no one is left unscathed."

Special features include filmmaker and cast commentary and a featurette on the making of the film.

Ryan Gosling Brings Back His Hot

Ryan Gosling looked like a hot and vastly improved version of himself at a screening of Lars and the Real Girl in NYC last night. While the mustache is still pretty ridiculous, his handsome somehow shines through. He cozied up to his costars, Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson, who are also excellent in the movie - which I wholeheartedly recommend. Loved it. Gosling seems to have slimmed down quickly since leaving the cast of The Lovely Bones, which makes me think that it can't really have been his bulkiness that cost him the role, right? Even though I'll miss him in that movie, just seeing him all gussied up is such a treat. And no, I'm not going to mention how much I wish Rachel McAdams was on his arm. Damn, I kinda just did anyway, right?

Ryan And Some Real Girls Hit NYC

Just one night after his LA premiere of Lars and the Real Girl, Ryan was showing it off in NYC. I was lenient with Ryan's first red carpet look, but this is kind of unfortunate. Though, golf claps for following through with the unique gray suit trend? I'm going to go ahead and blame jet lag for most of this. I can usually get behind the scruffy bearded look, so hopefully it'll be back to dreamy soon for Ryan. Meeting him on the red carpet was the movie's director Craig Gillespie and co-star Patricia Clarkson along with Amy Sedaris, whose quirkiness fits in perfectly with this movie. I'm especially excited to see the stars of two of my very favorite shows on the red carpet - Katrina Bowden from 30 Rock (back tonight! Yay!) and Connie Britton & Kyle Chandler from Friday Night Lights (back tomorrow! Double yay!).

Ryan & His Real Suit Premiere The Real Girl

Ryan Gosling got all spiffed up for the ~~prom~~ LA premiere of Lars and the Real Girl last night. What can I say, the man loves himself a unique gray suit, but sadly (oooor happily) he left his fancy tuxedo shirt at home this time. Love love love Ryan on screen and can't wait to see him in this quirky film, but I do wish that he would bring Rachel on the red carpet with him more often. I guess she's busy hanging out in wedding gowns up in Toronto, but just the hope that the cutest couple ever are still on is good enough. Plus, on Ryan's arm last night was once again his sister, awww, can't help but love such a family man.

Hallelujah! Ryan's Real Girl Is Still Rachel

Ryan Gosling boldly wore a denim shirt and then a plaid three piece suit to his Lars and the Real Girl press conference/premiere at the Toronto Film Festival yesterday. Yet, he totally made it work. During the conference, talk turned to the odd subject matter of the film - falling in love with a life sized Real Doll. They joked about how they treated her like a real member of the cast, even respecting her modesty by only changing her clothes in privacy. Love. It. BUT the most important part of was when Ryan said that his girlfriend Rachel McAdams doesn't like it when he leaves the doll around the house. OMG you guys, I love it. I had kind of given up hope that they were secretly still together. Um, major yays.

Fall Movie Preview: Sweet Romance

We may not be getting the crisp fall weather just yet, but we are getting previews for tons of movies opening in the fall. In preparation for this autumn and winter at the theaters, I've broken up the lengthy list of upcoming movies into many small themes for my Fall Movie Preview series. This way, you'll be in the know when the chillier months roll around, bringing a whole new crop of new films. In today's preview, all you need is love - in all its funny and heartbreaking variations.

I Could Never Be Your Woman
I really hope this movie is great, but I have admittedly little faith in it. It stars the gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer and adorable Paul Rudd, but was supposed to come out around Valentine's Day (over six months ago!) and now it's slated to open November 9. Not a good sign. Pfeiffer plays a 40-year-old divorcee facing the challenges and insecurities associated with getting older and raising a pre-teen daughter (played by Saoirse Ronan, the actress recently cast to play Susie in The Lovely Bones). She meets Adam (Rudd), a 29-year-old spirited guy who apparently teaches her how to loosen up and be a kid again. It looks like it's maybe a step up from The Perfect Man. Maybe. Feast of Love
This romantic drama, opening September 28, randomly takes place in Oregon. The impressive ensemble cast includes Morgan Freeman, Selma Blair and Greg Kinnear, among others. Various relationships are at the heart of this story, mostly focusing on Bradley (Kinnear) and his terrible luck with women. He learns valuable lessons about love from the other folks in his life. The trailer looks like a cheese pie with a dash of trite ("Do you think love is a trick, or do you think that it's the only meaning there is to this crazy dream?"), but it could end up being sweet, too.

Dan in Real Life
I just posted the very cute trailer for this movie, opening October 19, that has Steve Carell playing the charmingly overprotective widower raising three daughters. He's delighted when he meets a wonderful woman (played by Juliette Binoche, awesomely) - only to find out she's his brother's girlfriend. This is one I can't wait to catch on the big screen.

Lars and the Real Girl
A refreshingly quirky spin on the tired old romantic stories, Lars and the Real Girl finds Ryan Gosling playing Lars, a man who falls in love with a life-sized doll. Lars insists that everyone in his life act as though "Bianca" is a real person who he's dating. Yet in doing this, he may be missing out on a relationship with a human woman. Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson also star, happily. Check out the sweet-looking trailer here.

First Look: Ryan Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl

Well, after much speculation over exactly how this movie would shape up, the Ryan Gosling movie in which he falls for a doll finally has a trailer. Lars and the Real Girl certainly looks bizarre, but also funnier than I thought it would be.

Gosling's character Lars, a loner-type who seems to have issues with dating real human women, orders a life-size doll off the internet and insists that he is dating her. He tells his friends and family that "Bianca" is a "missionary," which is most likely a reference to the missionary position probably described on the Bianca's packaging. The adorable Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson also star.

This strange romantic indie screens at the Toronto Film Festival in September before opening in limited release October 12. To see the trailer, read more

Ryan's New Leading Lady is a Real Doll

Ryan Gosling the Mouseketeer is all grown up. By 26, he's already scored an Oscar nomination for Half Nelson and recently had the chance to star opposite Anthony Hopkins in Fracture. Now, he's ready for something completely different. Ryan is set (and excited) to star as a man who falls in love with a life-sized doll in the upcoming film Lars and the Real Girl. Hey, never let it be said he's afraid to take risks. Gosling, had this to say about the role - and the doll:

"They have really realistic ones. You can design them and they feel real," says Gosling, who plays the title character. "[My character] has a delusion. He orders one and he's convinced she's real. He's a hermit. He takes her into the town he lives in, and [the townspeople] play along with him, so they can get to know him and make him feel comfortable. In the process they fall in love with her too."

Evidently they're trying for something in the vein of a Hal Ashy film like Being There or Harold and Maude. Those are big shoes to fill, but if anyone can make us fall for a character in love with a blow-up doll, it's Gosling. I'm definitely excited to see how this one turns out.

And at least there's one thing that's for sure - he's not going to leave Rachel McAdams (if they're even still together) for his costar!

Ryan Wants to Give Brokenhearted Fans a Hug

We got Ryan Gosling's hot GQ cover and equal parts heartbreaking/heartwarming highlight quote yesterday, but now here's more from the swoon-worthy photoshoot and his delightfully quirky interview. Sigh, yes, moving on from the Ryan/Rachel break-up confirmation so many Notebook devotees dreaded. I do recommend that you read the whole article - especially the part about his famously lewd dance that made him famous (The Move), but after taking in the handsome pics, there are some great quotes. Here are highlights:

On his career decisions:“I’ve had actors that I really respect tell me, ‘You’ve gotta surf-and-turf it in this town. One for them and one for you.’ That’s not true. It’s really three for them and one for you. And not only that-if you do three for them, you’ve set a precedent. Any way you point yourself is where you’re gonna go. If you point yourself in that direction, it’s hard to ever come back....Being an actor is like being a cat burglar. You try to get in and out without being noticed. As soon as you get famous, it’s like you’ve got a marching band with you every time you walk out of the house. And it’s harder to make people believe you as a character. And your work goes downhill.”
Okay, fine, more on Rachel: “The only thing I remember is we both went down swingin’ and we called it a draw...Women are mad at me,” Gosling says with a rueful smile. “A girl came up to me on the street and she almost smacked me. Like, ‘How could you? How could you let a girl like that go?’ I feel like I want to give people hugs, they seem so sad. Rachel and I should be the ones getting hugs! Instead, we’re consoling everybody else.”
On Lars and the Real Girl: “I cried at the end, when I read it,” Gosling says. “I just thought it was so romantic-the idea that you don’t need to be loved in return in order to love something or someone. Love can come from you. It doesn’t have to be reciprocal. People love their cars. People love all kinds of things, and they really love them. And we don’t really value that kind of love because it’s not a real, reciprocal kind of love, but it’s real love to them.”

Kind of like how we love Ryan and Rachel together? Kidding, kidding, letting it go. Lars doesn't come out until next week, but I can't wait to see him in what looks like an incredible role. Oh, and I'll definitely take an IOU from him on that consoling hug, wink.
