Marion Cotillard blew me away as French icon and tortured chanteuse Edith Piaf in the biopic La Vie En Rose.

The talents behind her hair and makeup transformation deserve props, but Cotillard's fierce and wrenching portrayal of Piaf, particularly in her ravaged morphine addiction phase, totally earned her that Oscar. And . . . just look at her!

A lot of you said you go see the films once they're nominated, but if you didn't get to all of them before Sunday's show, maybe now's the time. Some people were so smitten with Marion Cotillard's acceptance speech that they want to rush out to see La Vie En Rose for her performance. Marion Cotillard won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose. Her fellow nominees included Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Laura Linney and Ellen Page, and her speech was absolutely adorable ("You rocked my life!"). How do you feel about this win?

TV Dinners: La Vie En Rose - Tournedos Rossini

While on the first date with the love of her life, Édith Piaf - one of France's most beloved popstars - demands that her date, Marcel Cerdan, take her to a fancy restaurant. The boxer hopes to dine on pastrami sandwiches while Piaf- a diva in her own time - is hungry for tournedos rossini. A decadent dish that includes a thick slab of steak, foie gras, truffles, and a red-wine sauce, tournedos rossini are not for every day. They do however, make a wonderfully romantic and elegant meal. Tournedos Rossini
From Just France

50g/2oz Butter
1 tbsp Olive Oil
4 slices of White Bread, crusts removed
4 tournedos of Beef Filet Mignon (tournedos)
Salt and Black Pepper
4 50g/2oz slices of Raw Foie Gras
2 tbsp Port
1 tbsp Brandy
1 tbsp Madeira
2 fresh Black Truffles, thinly sliced
190ml/6fl.oz. Beef or Veal Stock

Preheat the oven to warm, 250°F.
Cut the slices of bread into circles a little larger than the circumference of the beef tournedos then heat half the butter and a little of the oil in a frying pan on medium low heat, add the bread and fry until golden brown on both sides. Drain on kitchen paper and place on a heatproof serving platter.
Meanwhile, heat the remaining butter and oil in another large frying pan. Season the beef with salt and pepper then add to the pan and sauté for 3 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan with tongs, place each on top of the fried bread and place in the oven to keep warm.
Add the foie gras to the pan and sauté for 1 minute on each side, depending on the thickness. Remove from the pan with tongs, place once slice on each tournedos and return to the oven to keep warm.
Add the port, brandy and Madeira to the pan and bring to the boil, scraping up any bits in the bottom of the pan then boil until reduced by half.
Add the stock and sliced truffles, bring back to the boil and continue to boil rapidly for about 5 minutes to reduce.
To serve – pour the sauce over the top of the tournedos.

Serves 4.

Oscar Nominee: La Vie en Rose for Costumes

In the days leading up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories. This week, I'll be looking at the nominees for Best Costume Design. We've looked at the costumes in Across the Universe and Atonement, now let's examine those in La Vie en Rose.

Though it's hard to take your eyes off Marion Cotillard channeling Edith Piaf long enough to look at the costumes, I can easily see why this film was nominated. It's not that the clothing is outrageously ornate or complicated, but that the designers so thoroughly recreated the time period of Piaf's life. Similar to the Best Costumes nomination for The Queen last year, this nomination honors the accurate depiction of an actual person's life.

The costumes aid Cotillard's disappearance into Piaf's character by conveying her ascent from impoverished teenage street urchin to glamorous adult chanteuse. Although Piaf was always physically frail and slender (hence her nickname "The Sparrow"), the '40s-style dresses she wears in her triumphant stage performances help express both her strength and vulnerability. When this tiny woman belts out such songs as "Je ne regrette rien" ("I Have No Regrets"), her black dress with delicate lace detailing combined with strong shoulders echoes this dichotomy.

BAFTA Honors Atonement, La Vie en rose and Shia Labeouf

While we were busy handing out Grammys last night, the folks across the pond held their own star-studded award ceremony: the BAFTA Awards. In keeping with many of the awards ceremonies thus far, Atonement and No Country for Old Men were warmly recognized, though the picture with the most wins was La Vie en rose. Marion Cotillard was reportedly "visibly shocked" to receive the Leading Actress award.

Atonement took top honors with the Best Picture award, though the Coen Bros. nabbed the prize for Best Director. Diablo Cody took home the award for her Juno screenplay, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly won for Adapted Screenplay. Many of the acting awards were to be expected (Javier Bardem, Daniel Day-Lewis), though Tilda Swinton's win against Cate Blanchett and Samantha Morton was a bit of a surprise.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, however, the Orange Rising Star Award - which is decided by the public - was given to Shia Labeouf. He was up against Sienna Miller, Ellen Page, Tom Riley and Tang Wei. Shia was not present to claim his award.

The BAFTA Awards: The Winners

There were smiles all round on Sunday night, as the British Academy of Film and Television award winners were announced in London. Jonathan Ross presented the award ceremony, in place of the familiar Stephen Fry, and the gongs were split fairly evenly over the best films of last year. Out of its massive haul of fourteen nominations, Atonement picked up only two awards – although one of those was the top award of Best Film, and La Vie En Rose picked up four awards. Its star, the very sweet Marion Cotillard, unpredictably beat Brit Julie Christie to receiving the Leading Actress nod.

BAFTA Noms Announced; Atonement Once Again Most Beloved

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the 2008 nominations, which largely mirror the Globe noms - though there's (unsurprisingly) even more love for Atonement on the other side of the pond. The romantic Joe Wright-directed drama leads the nominations with a whopping 14, while No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood each nabbed nine. La Vie en Rose is another favorite, as is The Bourne Ultimatum, which is one of the few major departures from other recent award nominations.

The acting categories are filled with familiar names (Clooney, McAvoy, Knightley, Cotillard, Bardem, Blanchett, etc.), though there are a few new additions, like Samantha Morton (Control) and Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men). And apparently the German film The Lives of Others, which took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film last year is now eligible for a BAFTA award, and has a good chance of winning one with five nominations.

I witnessed Lauren's Fall collection on the runway and now it's time to buy it. The La Vie en Rose collection is now available on her brand website. It's a mix of her staple California jersey basics, with a French flair and a sliver of the '80s. Her favorite teeny frocks range from strapless and girlie to maxi glam. Halters, asymmetrical and scoop necks rule; this collection is a tad sexier than her past ones. Prices range from $90 for a top to $230 for a dress.
