Music Video: Radiohead Joins with MTV to Fight Global Trafficking

The last thing you may be looking for from your pop culture intake is a big old message about global trafficking - or as MTV's EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) project puts it, modern-day slavery. However, I think it is precisely this blending together of real-world message with pop culture that Radiohead is attempting to do in a new video for their song "All I Need." They succeed beautifully by showing us two young boys in different parts of the world going about their everyday lives and how different their respective experiences are.

Of working with MTV and the importance of this issue, frontman Thom Yorke told the Hollywood Reporter:

All power to MTV for taking this on because its obviously going to be difficult for them in terms of the advertisers. With the ("All I Need") video, their lawyers had to beg to make sure there wasn't a single white trainer with a logo on it because the implication would be a little too close. But the implication is still there.

For those who don't know, a "trainer" is an athletic shoe, like one made by, say, Nike.

Nothing like a poignant video tackling a somewhat taboo topic in the West to suck all the snark right out of the blogosophere. Stereogum called the video "deeply inspiring" and said that the final shot is "one of the more emotionally charged moments in a music video that we can remember." I couldn't agree more and think everyone should pause today and take a look.

Happy Radiohead Day! If you're a fan of the UK band, then today - the day the band's In Rainbows officially became available for download - kind of feels like Christmas and your birthday all in one. Radiohead made news with its decision to let fans pay whatever they wanted for the album, so I'm wondering: How much did you (or will you) shell out? New Radiohead Album Costs Whatever You Want It To

First, the news that will have Radiohead fans everywhere squealing with joy: The band's first full-length album since 2003 will be released Oct. 10. The news came straight from the mouth - or rather the typing fingers - of guitarist Jonny Greenwood on the band's blog.

Next, the part that will have record industry executives everywhere sobbing with frustration: Radiohead has chosen to forego record labels and release the album themselves, through their Web site, for whatever price you choose to pay.

As of now, you can pre-order the digital download of the album from the Web site. When you add it to your cart, it pops up with a blank field to enter your price (in British pounds); if you click the question mark, the words "It's up to you" pop up. Click the question mark again, and the site insists: "No, really. It's up to you."

The band is also releasing a deluxe version of In Rainbows, which includes the album on vinyl, a CD version with more songs than the download, and booklets with artwork and lyrics. That version costs 40 pounds, or about $82. A regular ol' CD is also in the works, to be released in 2008.

Did Reading Rainbow Inspire Your Love of Books?

LeVar Burton and the executives of Reading Rainbow taught children that they could do anything, but no one could get funding to continue the beloved show's broadcasting rights. The PBS series based on texts and inspiring kids to pick them up and turn their pages has ended. Though the program won numerous Emmys and aired for 26-years, its tried and true approach is different than what networks are now offering young viewers. According to one report:

Research has directed programming toward phonics and reading fundamentals as the front line of the literacy fight. Reading Rainbow occupied a more luxurious space - the show operated on the assumption that kids already had basic reading skills and instead focused on fostering a love of books.

Soup's On: Corn and Roasted Red Pepper Rainbow Soup

I first learned about rainbow soups while reading The New Basics. Since then, I make them all the time! A rainbow soup is basically two different soups that when combined, make one delicious dish. This version features a cooling corn soup and a spicy red pepper puree. The recipes are so simple - minimal chopping, few ingredients - it's not that much harder than making one soup. Ok yes, you do have to wash two pots, but the final result is rewarding, delicious, and totally worth it. This soup would make a stunning starter to an arty dinner. To see how I made it, read more.

Corn and Roasted Red Pepper Rainbow Soup
From Everyday With Rachael Ray

Ingredients

4 tbsp. unsalted butter
1 onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
One 16-oz. package frozen corn kernels, thawed
One 16-oz. jar roasted red peppers, undrained
1/2 cup salad croutons, plus more for garnish
1 tsp. ground cumin
Two 14-ounce cans chicken or vegetable broth
1/2 cup sour cream
Salt and freshly ground pepper
Hot sauce

Directions

In each of 2 medium saucepans, heat 2 tablespoons butter over medium-low heat.

Add half of the onion and garlic to each pan and cook, stirring frequently, until softened, about 7 minutes.

Add the corn to one pan, and add the roasted red peppers with their brine along with the croutons and cumin to the other pan.

Add 1 can chicken broth to each pan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer both soups, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes.

Stir the sour cream into the corn soup.

Using a hand blender, puree each soup in its pan; season to taste with salt and pepper.

Season the pepper soup with hot sauce to taste.

To serve, using two measuring cups, pour the soups simultaneously into opposite sides of each bowl; top with croutons.

Serves 4.

Woman Amazed by Sprinkler Rainbow

I know they say you should keep a child-like wonder about the world around you, but the lady doing the voice-over in this home video is taking it a bit too far. "What is oozing out of our ground?" she asks about the rainbow that's forming over her sprinkler. To which I reply with a (couple) questions: "What drugs are you on? And may I have some?"
