Heroes Rundown Chapter Nine: "It's Coming"

In case you somehow didn't notice, the promise of an eclipse is a consistent theme in this week's episode of Heroes. The opening narration explains that when the moon passes in front of the sun, apparently anything is possible (really, anything?). "It's power is undeniable. . . It's meaning unknowable."

In the next two episodes, "The Eclipse Parts I and II," we'll find out what happens, exactly, but for now all we know is that "it's coming." Yeah. To chat about this week's Heroes,

This week's episode of Heroes goes back a year, filling in some blanks and connecting some stories with others we've already seen. Is it wrong that I might've liked this episode more than the others recently because it includes bits of season one?

The episode goes back to show how some of the heroes became villains in the first place. As the opening narration explains when Hiro goes all white-eyed, "To fight evil, one must know evil. One must journey back in time and find that fork in the road where heroes turn one way and villains turn another." From there we see what Hiro sees — the secret goings-on in some of the heroes lives a year ago.

This week's episode of Heroes has so many daddy issues you'd think it's Lost. We've got the Petrelli family head honcho, Arthur, along with a sad story about Matt Parkman's dad Maury. Mohinder tries to avenge his father's death and Claire and Nathan are reunited (though as Claire points out, dads aren't always as they seem).

This version of the future is bizarre (especially Sylar's story!) and scary (cold-hearted gangster Claire). It will be interesting to see when/if/how it can be avoided. Am I alone in thinking this premiere was kickass? I feel like they upped the comedy factor and threw us some crazy new developments. It was thrilling and gruesome and surprising and funny. . . My faith in Heroes is fully restored. I'm not sure I needed both this episode and the one that came after it; I forgot how much they pack into each episode. After two of them my brain was starting to overload. So, here we can discuss the first of the two episodes, "The Second Coming," in which I think the best part was at the end (see: the end of this post after the jump). Heroes Rundown Chapter 11: Powerless

Here's how I feel upon the completion of the second volume of Heroes: 80 percent annoyed, 20 percent relieved. I'm relieved because this first half of the season is over and now everyone can work on making Heroes good again for the third volume, "Villains." I'm annoyed because — along with being a pretty lame episode — they told us "two heroes would fall" in this episode and there are definitely more deserving victims than the ones who bit the dust this week!

I also feel like this season has been a waste so far. Even Tim Kring has admitted as much, which just frustrates me more. I'm going to have to think long and hard about watching this show again when (if?) it returns in the Spring.

For now, some thoughts on this week's final chapter of volume two:

If nothing else, this week's episode included some playfulness and humor that isn't always present in the show: Maya wearing an apron, borrowed from Mohinder and Parkman, that reads "World's Best Dad;" Nathan and Parkman's rocky landing together; Claire saying to Mr. Muggles, "You won't leave me, will you, Mr. Muggles?" The dog turns and trots away.
I really warmed to Elle this episode. She's getting more character depth, and more to work with besides just making snarky comments and being weird. She seems like such a little girl sometimes and I feel sorry for her.

Heroes Rundown Chapter 10: "Truth and Consequences"

While I liked this week's episode of Heroes enough, there were so many characters involved I found it hard to care about any of them. I am relieved, however, that we're starting to get to the collective goal of making sure the mutated virus doesn't spread to the majority of the world's population. The heroes very much needed a unifying game plan so they could stop flitting about with useless people (cough-cough-West-cough) and get to the good stuff.

Also, is it terrible that I was totally relieved when the promos for next week said two of the heroes will die? No, don't answer that. I don't want to know. To check out some of my thoughts on this week's Heroes and to share your own (spoilers, ahoy!)

Heroes Rundown Chapter 9: "Cautionary Tales"

I was all ready to write off another episode of Heroes as being kind of lame (enough with the West-Claire romance!) and then ker-pow! That ending was awesome. Also, it was a relief to just get to some of the meatier storylines instead of flitting around with the Wonder Twins. This episode left me feeling more satisfied with Heroes than I've been in a while.

After reading Tim Kring's profuse apologies for the second season of Heroes, I absolutely couldn't wait to be redeemed by last night's episode. While this chapter was definitely one of the best of the second season, I have to admit that for me it came just a little bit too late. Well, after weeks of Heroes episodes that left me stifling a yawn, this forward-moving episode was a relief. Best part: we find out who Adam Monroe is! I certainly did not see that one coming, and I commend the Heroes gang for pulling off such a cool surprise.

Thankfully, there were no Wonder Twins and no Sylar (as much as I like Sylar usually, I want his story to either go someplace or end). Yet again, could have done without the Hiro-in-ancient-Japan thing, but learning Adam Monroe's identity more or less made up for that.

Heroes Rundown Chapter 6: "The Line"

After the exciting Heroes episode last week with Parkman's dad and the introduction of Elle, this week's episode seems tame. I did, however, enjoy the little prank Claire and West cook up, and it looks like Sylar doesn't really need his powers in order to manipulate people.

The big bad side of HRG is back, which was kind of delightful for a while, but his harsh actions at the end surprised me.

Heroes Rundown Chapter 5: "Fight or Flight"

This week's episode had a couple key things that revived my love of Heroes: Kristen Bell and Nightmare Man. We didn't get to see too much of Elle and her electrifying power, but just the taste was enough for me. Too bad we won't be seeing Elle again for a few episodes, as Bell explained recently.

However, this episode also featured some massive lapses in judgment that I found distracting. More on that later.

I certainly did not miss some of the more tiresome storylines, like the West-Claire stuff, or the Maya-Alejandro drama. Could have done without Niki's issues in this episode, and I'd like to find out where the Monica thing is going, too. For more of my thoughts on the episode and to share your own (spoilers ahead!)

Heroes Rundown Chapter 4: "The Kindness of Strangers"

Ack! So many heroes, so little time or patience. Seriously, folks, this is getting crazy. I can't care about this many characters at once!

Adding to the mix of this season's superheroes is Micah's cousin Monica who, in addition to having a superhuman go-getter attitude, can also pick up skills super quickly (Heroes Wiki calls it photographic reflexes). I like the idea of incorporating a New Orleans storyline, but the number of heroes on this show is getting out of hand! We didn't even see anything about Hiro or Peter this week.

We did get to watch as West and Claire grow closer (despite the HRG's ban on dating), Maya and Alejandro encounter Sylar, Angela Petrelli "confesses" to a crime, Nathan shaves his beard (hooray!) and helps Parkman dig deeper into the Company's secrets. Of course, that's not all though, so to read more about this week's episode of Heroes, (spoilers ahead)

Hands down, the best scenes in this week's "Heroes" were the ones featuring Sylar! Welcome back, villain. I am so intrigued to find out what his deal is right now, and as much as I love Sylar being evil, I think I love it even more when he struggles.

Meanwhile, there's a ton of stuff going on with all our gazillion heroes — Niki and Micah are back, Hiro does some more stuff in old Japan, Claire and West share some special moments, Peter finds Irish thug life to his liking, and more happens with the twins, Maya and Alejandro. "Heroes" is so back! This week's season two premiere brought us right back to the lives of Claire, Hiro, Mohinder, Parkman, the Petrelli family and many more old and new characters. If I have any complaint it's that they crammed a ton of storylines into one season premiere. It was getting a little crowded for my tastes. And we didn't even see some of the old familiars at all, like Sylar, Niki, DL or Micah.

I think he is speaking specifically about the season finale. Mundane, indeed. I'm not utterly disappointed, but I'm not wowed or entirely satisfied either. I'm just going to say it: I think the "Desperate Housewives" season finale was actually better than the "Heroes" finale. Maybe my expectations were too high. "Heroes" Recap: Episode 22, "Landslide"

On this week's episode of "Heroes" (the second-to-last one of the season!), all the heroes' stories start to merge together in an extremely satisfying way. This show never fails to surprise me, yet it also gives me pretty much everything I want to see.

Mr. Bennet and Parkman go to retrieve "The Walker Tracking System," while DL and Jessica/Niki seek out Micah via Linderman. Nathan Petrelli is poised to win the election — with Micah's help. Meanwhile, Claire, Peter and Ted make an escape plan which goes awry thanks to — who else? — Sylar. Those are the least spoilery details, so if you haven't seen the episode do not read on. This week's episode of "Heroes" was great. We meet Molly Walker as a "special" person, not just the little girl whose thoughts Parkman "heard" when she was crouching in the closet. We watch Sylar visit with his mother. We endure weird bonding moments between Peter and Claire, who still seem like they are flirting even though he's technically her uncle. And suddenly Mohinder has sexy muttonchops.

"Heroes" Recap: Episode 20, "String Theory"

Three words: Best. "Heroes." Ever.

This episode was so action-packed and edge-of-your-seat exciting, I don't know where to begin. So many twists and turns! This all made it especially painful when my DVR-recorded episode ended five minutes before the actual ending, due to NBC's horrible, sneaky, no-good tactic for getting more people to watch "The Real Wedding Crashers" — by having a few minutes of "Heroes" bleed into "Crashers." Thus, if you don't also record "Crashers," the "Heroes" recording just stops and poor schlubs like me are screwed out of seeing the ending. Luckily, I could watch the last bit on NBC.com this morning.

Wow, the "Heroes" came back from the hiatus with capes a-flyin', so to speak. Anyone else notice that the narration has shifted from Mohinder Suresh to Linderman? And Linderman makes for a dramatic narrator, prone to lofty statements like "People think I collect art, but I really collect lives fixed in paint."

Can I just say "Heroes" is awesome? I felt a surge of affection for Tim Kring and the rest of the gang last night for delivering such a riveting and fast-paced episode. Hooray!

Claire and the Haitian are still on the run, and we learn quite a bit more about Candice, Thompson's new favorite cronie. Peter furrows his brow some more — this time because he's grieving for Simone — and the Niki vs. Jessica squabbling continues.

This week on "Heroes," a new hero appeared! Well, Hana/Samantha/Wireless is not so new if you've been geeking out with the Primatech website and receiving clues via text message and email, as I have. Even if you haven't, you can still check out her website and get caught up on her background. It looks like she and Ted-the-radioactive-guy are starting a revolution.

Claire's adoptive mom, Mrs. Bennet, is suffering from headaches and memory loss. When she collapses, Claire, in all her infinite wisdom, tells the doctor that a guy erased her mom's memories by touching her head. Naturally, Doc doesn't believe her. Claire is surly and bitter toward her father when he arrives — it looks like the happy cheerleader has discovered teen angst.
Mr. Bennet visits Isaac and, assuming Peter will show up at Isaac's studio, gives him a gun and tells him to "Save the world."

This week's "Heroes" included plenty of family drama (including Claire's "You're not my real dad!"), a dual personality argument without the help of a mirror, and some evil Sylar-ific antics. All in all, it was a satisfying Monday night. For my highlights, read on:

First things first, is anyone else unbearably attracted to Mohinder? It’s starting to distract me from my work. Anyway.
Jessica is dominating the twins' life right now, but she can't escape the worried looks she gets from Niki in every mirror. When she sees Niki reflected in a vase, tiny Niki shakes her head in distress, and I half-expected to hear a little mini-voice saying: "No fair! Let me out, you big meanie!"

"Heroes" Recap: Episode 14, "Distractions"

I love "Heroes," but it sure borders on silly sometimes. Mostly I'm talking about how Hiro's dad was made out to be some kind of crazed mob boss. When Hiro and Ando were driven to a deserted Long Island port in an unmarked van, I thought for sure one of them would be swimming with the fishes (er, whatever the saying might be in Japanese). But really, dad just wants Hiro to return to the family business in Tokyo.

But more on that later, along with the big revelation about Claire's dad. The episode starts, yet again, with Peter. Invisible Man says that right now Peter’s power is a reflex, not a conscious effort, and Peter is holding back because he's worried about what people think of him when really, everyone is the same: "selfish, deceitful, and gassy.” When Peter insists Simone isn’t like that, Invisible Man suggests they go spy on her to find out if that's true.

Niki's psychologist encourages Jessica to come out, so Jessica appears, breaks out of her chains, and mangles the psychologist. When Niki comes to, she remembers nothing of the incident and is thrown back into a cell. One of Linderman's men enters, saying she is free to go home because a man on death row confessed to everything. Niki worries that now she is indebted to Linderman, but the man tells her not to worry about that now. Back at home, Jessica is dominant again, and has apparently trapped Niki inside the mirror, which was an image that made me burst out laughing.

"Heroes" Recap: Episode 13, "The Fix"

This week's episode of "Heroes" revolved around parent-child relationships: Two of the heroes' parents are revealed, one hero is going to have a baby, and we learn more about Micah's power.

The episode starts off where last week's ended: The invisible man is choking Peter Petrelli, amazed and angry that Peter can see him. Peter pleads with him, saying the city’s in danger, to which invisible guy replies, “Then you better leave town.” Peter wants to learn how to control his ability, but the invisible man says he can’t teach him anything.

Next, we see Niki wake up in her padded cell. A psychiatrist named Dr. Witherson thinks Niki has multiple personality disorder and says she can help. Niki is reluctant at first but ultimately agrees to work with the psychiatrist for her son Micah's sake. Dr. Witherson says she'll need to speak with Jessica in order for anything to work. "Heroes" Recap: Episode 12, "Godsend"

After a long hiatus, "Heroes" is back! (To get up to speed, check out my recap of the season so far.) Last night's episode, "Godsend," begins two weeks after Peter Petrelli had his vision and subsequent collapse. Now he lies in a Manhattan hospital bed, apparently still having visions, while Nathan demands Simone take him to view Isaac's paintings: "I want to see what's worth all this." The two go to the studio to find Isaac, who says he can paint without the drugs now and that he still loves Simone.

One of Mr. Linderman's men shows up at D.L.'s house to retrieve the $2 million, and D.L. asks if the charges against him have now been dropped. The man says Niki's confession took care of most of that. As for the other stuff, he says D.L. is a free man but still in debt to Linderman. To find out what's up with the other heroes,

Season Recap: "Heroes"

"Heroes" is one of the best new shows on TV, and I'm very excited for the new episodes on Jan. 22! Whether you’re itching to read about your favorite characters or you’ve decided to pick up the series mid-season, check out my recap of the first ten episodes. The show centers around the work of Chandra Suresh, a geneticist determined to figure out how some people with certain genetic abnormalities are capable of superhuman powers. In his research he encounters Sylar, desperate to be extraordinary, and when Sylar finds out he isn’t, he goes about these killing these super-humans and opening up their heads. His exact tactics are unclear, but he is then able to “consume” their powers. Sylar kills Chandra and continues on his rampage to acquire every possible superhuman ability. Chandra’s son, Mohinder, begins piecing together the bits of the puzzle that was his father's work.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bennet has been studying extraordinary people as well, and even adopted one of them, his daughter Claire. He is intent on obtaining Chandra’s well-hidden list of superhumans and removing Claire from that list so she can live a relatively normal life. Yet there is something sinister about Mr. Bennet, too. For example, what is his relationship with the quiet Haitian man who can erase people's memories? Who are the people who go over Mr. Bennet’s house to meet their “biological daughter,” Claire? Why does he kidnap so many of these “special people” and keep some of them in his creepy hospital-like place?

There’s too much mystery surrounding Mr. Bennet’s character, so to move on to the main heroes in the show,
