Movie Preview: Harold

"I'm going over the nerd wall and I ain't never going back." Those are words to live by.

Trying to guess exactly how the film Harold would shape up based on the casting news alone was kinda difficult. There is an odd mix of actors involved, including Cuba Gooding Jr., some Saturday Night Live alums (Rachel Dratch, Colin Quinn, Chris Parnell), '80s star Ally Sheedy, and cute young actors like Spencer Breslin and Nikki Blonsky in her first feature film role since Hairspray.

The trailer is goofy and sweet and makes me laugh. The idea of a kid with premature balding getting picked on is you know, heartbreaking, but I can't help but giggle at people mistaking the poor guy for an elderly person. And Cuba Gooding Jr. actually looks like he may be back on his game, as he seems pretty charming and funny in the preview. The whole thing looks sweetly absurd with something life-affirming at the core.

Channing Tatum and Columbus Short are signed on to star in an untitled buddy action flick, says Hollywood Reporter.
Instead of Harvey Keitel, Joe Mantegna will replace Mandy Patinkin on "Criminal Minds," Zap2It reports.
"Saturday Night Live" folks Rachel Dratch and Chris Parnell will join the cast of Harold, which includes Nikki Blonski and Ally Sheedy, says ComingSoon.
Billboard is reporting that Jennifer Lopez's next album will be in English, titled Brave, and will be released October 9.
ComingSoon reports that Corey Feldman, Corey Haim and Jamison Newlander will all be in the Lost Boys 2 straight-to-DVD movie.
Fox has purchased "Drop Dead Diva," a drama script about a dead beauty queen whose soul enters the body of an unattractive lawyer, Mediaweek reports.
According to the LA Times, New Line is eager to patch things up with Peter Jackson so he will direct The Hobbit.
Variety is reporting that "The Sopranos"' James Gandolfini will return to HBO to play corporate sports scout Sonny Vaccaro, who signed Michael Jordan to the first million-dollar shoe deal at Nike.

Blonsky, Quinn and Sheedy Join Teen Comedy

Harold, the rapidly aging teen.
Nikki Blonsky, Ally Sheedy and Colin Quinn have been added to the cast of the comedy Harold, all about a prematurely balding teenager (played by Spencer Breslin). Blonsky, in her first role after Hairspray, will play Harold's loyal, nerdy friend Rhonda. Sheedy, returning to her teenage movie roots (she played Allison in The Breakfast Club), will play Harold's mother tasked with the challenge of helping her son endure the teasing of his peers. Quinn, who I rarely enjoy watching at all, will play Reedy, "a drunken barfly who's a regular at a strip club Harold frequents."

Interestingly...
The movie will be shot at Blonsky's real-life former middle school, about which she says, "It's kinda creepy. I didn't have the best time there, so going back is definitely cooler."

Oh, and then there's this:
"Cuba Gooding Jr., one of the film's producers, plays a school janitor who befriends the troubled title character."

I usually don't get sucked into viral marketing schemes for movies, but I have to hand it to the creators of Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay for coming up with a funny gimmick. You can have a George W. Bush impersonator send a personalized message to your friend's cell phone by visiting the movie's website and selecting a goofy message. The service is free, but oh-so-funny. "Umm CitizenSugar, this is Dubya. You know, the Emperor of America."

Fashion's Movers and Shakers in the Sunday Times Rich List

Yesterday, The Sunday Times published their annual rich list and it was not without a few fashion faces. Obviously, because of the financial climate it's been a tumultuous year for cash flow, but some of the biggest names in retail have managed to stay high up in the list. Sir Philip Green has made an enormous impact on the High Street, particularly with Topshop which recently launched in New York. He is sixth in the list, along with his wife Lady Green, reportedly owning £3.83 billion despite losing £500 million in the past 12 months.

Other key fashion names in the list included BFC chairman Harold Tilman at number 201. He has investments in Jaeger, and has unfortunately lost £70 million this year. Paul Smith is also on the list and is well placed for the difficult time ahead having just opened a warehouse in his hometown of Nottingham. He lost £30 million, but still holds on to a cool £230 million.

Tamara Mellon is one of only 100 women in the list and has managed to keep her wealth at an equal level to last year at £102 million. She has recently made significant investments in the revival of Halston which has so far been very successful.

Comedians Converge on No Man's Land

Comedians came out in force for No Man's Land's press night at the Duke of York's Theatre last night. The play has transferred from its run at Dublin's Gate Theatre to London, and the stars of the show were joined by playwright Harold Pinter as well as Eddie Izzard, Rob Brydon and Dominic Cooper. David Walliams happily posed with his mother Kathleen as well as his costar Michael Gambon, who's also currently on the big screen in Brideshead Revisited, while Russell Brand brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the night in his shades. What a lovely bunch of blokes!

Burning Question: Why Do Recipes Call For Stale Bread?

Many recipes - from French toast to bread pudding - call for leftover bread. But why would anyone want to cook with old bread that's hard and dry?

Eaten out of hand, day-old bread may taste inferior to its fresh counterpart. But stale bread actually has virtuous characteristics that can make it preferable to cook with. According to food science authority Harold McGee, when freshly baked bread cools, its starches reorganize to form bonds that are even firmer and stronger than they were before. This means that if the bread is soaked in a wet substance - such as eggs for French toast or milk for bread pudding - it will still retain its sponge-like structure rather than falling apart. Bread crumbs are an ideal binding agent in cooking for the same reason: even when wet, they will maintain structure.

Why Be Famous When You Can Be Almost Famous?

Before you can be famous, you need to be almost famous. The folks at S.Pellegrino understand this concept and are giving more than 60 culinary students the opportunity to claim their fame. In the 6th Annual S.Pellegrino Almost Famous Competition, students work their way to the finals by competing in regional contests. More than 30 top culinary schools in the US and Canada are participating and students will be given the opportunity to go head-to-head against each other in front of a panel of judges.

Once they've excelled in their region, they are able to proceed to the final event at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley. The event takes place March 7–10 and consists of three categories: Harvest Mystery Basket, Signature Dish, and People's Choice. This year the event will be hosted by Top Chef season-one-winner Harold Dieterle and Sopranos star Lorraine Bracco.

When asked about the competition Harold said:

"The restaurant industry has all the qualities of a real-life competition. Almost Famous sets up these young
chefs to feel comfortable and thrive in these high-pressure situations, which is why so many of the students leave the competition and go on to work for some of the best restaurants in the country."

This indeed may be true. Last year's winner, Ranbir Batra, was able to experience work opportunities he never would have had otherwise, including working alongside Sara Moulton. In addition to new culinary adventures, the overall winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize.
