They were used in reference to a teenager who was dared to lay in a vat of cement at a construction site, after which he was encased in several tons of concrete — yeah, you can say "really big trauma" again. As is often the case with Grey's, those three little words paralleled what was happening in the lives of the doctors too.

The second-to-last episode of Grey's Anatomy began with Meredith uttering the words "the only problem with being a resident is, you feel crazy all the time." It just happened to be the perfect setup for the rest of the episode aptly titled "Losing My Mind." Case in point, Crazy Resident No. 1: Meredith. First, she attempted to fire her therapist (most likely because last week she called her a coward). But regardless of how Meredith feels about it, she is a coward! It's annoying week after week how she covertly pines after Derek but then says things like "that's where love exists, in delusional fantasies." It's as if she's trying too hard to prove that she can't — or won't — love him.

My major problem with this episode of Grey's Anatomy can pretty much be summed up by its title: "The Becoming." All the characters still seem stuck. This whole season is supposedly about change, as the promos remind us each week. But here we are, with only two episodes and three hours of Grey's left, and we're still just in the "becoming" phase. I'm ready for some being.

Welcome back, Seattle Grace! I'm sure the simple fact that this was a new episode of Grey's Anatomy after all that time in the great, barren strike wilderness influenced my opinion of this episode, but it was nice good to see everyone back — with their new haircuts, new relationships, and new facial hair statuses.

That said, I think the episode suffered a lot just by being the first one back. Not only did the writers have to fill in the gaps of what happened over the past six weeks, but they also had to move us — quickly! — into the stories for the rest of the season. Well, that's what all the anticipation was for. Our very special "Grey's Anatomy" aired last night, advancing things for our doctors at Seattle Grace and offering a glimpse of what could become "Private Practice" if ABC picks up the show for the fall. And I've got to say, I was underwhelmed by both shows. The awkward, back-and-forth structure kept me from enjoying — or even concentrating on — either one. I know the writers want to pretend this was just another episode of "Grey's," but we all know by now that the LA stuff is meant to be a pilot, so admit it and give it its own hour so we can form a coherent opinion already. Yeesh.

The overbearing metaphors in the medical cases really bugged me on Thursday — seriously, a dollhouse? — but I didn't hate everything about "My Favorite Mistake." Well, everything appears to be back to normal on "Grey's Anatomy" after that whole ferry boat incident. It's almost like Meredith didn't even "die"! With all of the regulars still living and breathing, it's time for them to refocus on what really matters: doomed relationships, drinking, and inappropriate sex.

I was glad to see my lighter-hearted "Grey's" back, but it seemed like things went back to pre-sweeps days a little too fast. It's a little like the whole clinic-opening-in-eight-days debacle — can't we all just have a moment to talk about how Meredith almost died? All of this is really just a way of stalling so I don't spoil the big, humongous, scream-at-your-TV moment that came at the end, though, so if you want to talk about that,

Rounds. We learn that Burke had surgery, and he and Cristina have technically made up, but they're still not speaking. Meanwhile, there's a pre-surgery party — with hats and noisemakers — in George's dad's room. The doctors then meet a teenager named Heather, who has a spinal defect and one heck of an attitude: "If you're expecting me to be the brave and heartwarming 'differently abled' girl, that isn't going to happen."

Season Recap: "Grey's Anatomy"

It hasn't been an easy year so far at Seattle Grace Hospital. The doctors of "Grey's Anatomy" have been in turmoil ever since the season two finale, when Izzie crossed ethical lines in an attempt to save a patient she loved, leading to Burke's shooting. This season has focused on how the consequences of Izzie's actions continue to change lives at Seattle Grace. It's a far cry from the "Grey's" of season one, when all the drama came from doctors sleeping with each other — though of course, there's still plenty of that too.

The show's central storyline has been the plight of Burke, who was once one of the finest heart surgeons in the country and now wonders if he can ever wield a scalpel again. The operation Derek performed to fix nerve damage in Burke's arm left him with a hand tremor, but Derek — who's distracted by other things, namely the demise of his marriage and his lust for a certain intern named Meredith — clears Burke for surgery. Burke knows he shouldn't be operating, but Cristina offers to help him. They become a team, "a well-oiled machine," as Cristina says.
