What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Elegy
Here's a movie with two well-respected actors in the lead roles that got very little attention when it came out (I wrote about it awhile back as part of my Ben Kingsley slideshow but barely heard anything about it after that). And interestingly, the movie was generally well-received by critics. Based on the cast and description, I'm totally intrigued.

Elegy is adapted from Philip Roth's novella The Dying Animal and follows David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley), a successful New York author in his 60s who's settled into the fact that he has a strained relationship with his son (Peter Sarsgaard) and a purely sexual relationship with a middle-aged businesswoman (Patricia Clarkson). His life is then unhinged by the arrival of Consuela Castillo (Cruz), a woman who enrolls in one of his classes.

Special features include commentary with screenwriter Nicholas Meyer and a featurette titled "The Poetry of Elegy."

Degrassi: The Next Generation: Season Seven
Before Shenae Grimes was smiling up a storm on the new 90210, she was on the new Degrassi, and now season seven is here for fans to own. I know a lot of fans of this teen drama reboot who will be stoked to pick up these DVDs.

According to Netlfix, the seventh season tackles heavy subject matter like smoking pot, suicide, sexual assault, - even cancer. Jeez! Also, "A fire at rival Lakehurst High means some new students are switching to Degrassi, forcing the gang to confront the aftermath of J.T.'s murder." So, murder too.

DVD extras include special commentary, bloopers, and deleted scenes.

Which Penelope Cruz Look Is Most Fab?

Promoting two movies in one week may have Hollywood newbies shaking at their knees but Penelope Cruz pulled it off with style to spare. This week, the seasoned siren stylishly appeared on one red carpet to the next for her two movies, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Elegy. Even in jeans, Cruz looks classy and cool. Penelope chose to wear divinely dark pieces from the likes of Marchesa, Matthew Williamson, Herve Leroux, and Oscar de la Renta. Everything looked naturally gorgeous on this Spanish beauty, but which look was your favorite?

Stars From Casual to Glamorous Give Us Their Elegy

Just one night after her big Vicky Cristina Barcelona premiere in LA, Penelope Cruz was in another long black dress for the Elegy screening in NYC last night. She left the rest of her gorgeous costars, including Javier, behind for this one, but had plenty of glamorous party friends. Peter Sarsgaard had his costar and friend Patricia Clarkson filling in while Maggie was elsewhere. Love me some Gerard Butler, but he could use a little work on those red carpet poses. This looks like another intense one from Miss Cruz, though considering her other release this summer involves a love scene with Scarlett, I'm guessing whatever happens on the big screen with Ben Kingsley in this movie won't be making as many headlines.

Ben Kingsley Is the Man of the Hour

Ben Kingsley has always been a man of many faces (and accents), but lately it seems like he's popping up in every movie (and every time with a different accent). I knew he was in War, Inc. with John Cusack, and in one of my Tribeca favorites, The Wackness. And then when I checked out the trailer for Elegy (which is mesmerizing only because Penelope Cruz is so smoking hot no matter what she does), there he was again!
In addition to these recent theatrical releases, Kingsley has four films in various stages of production and four more titles in pre-production.

Penelope Cruz's Pretty Glamorous Elegy

Penelope Cruz looked chic in her purple shirt and high waisted skirt earlier today at a Madrid press conference for her upcoming film Elegy, and gorgeous in gold at the premiere. Things are pretty busy for Penelope these days - she's been showing off her line for Mango and working on Broken Hugs, the latest film by her BFF Pedro Almodovar. Beyond all that, there have been rumors of an upcoming wedding for her and Javier, though we're not sure how she'd find the time to plan it!

Berlin Brings Out Celebs, Fireflies, and Elegies

The stars were scattered all over the map this weekend, between the Grammys and the BAFTAs, but yet another set of celebs headed to Germany for the 58th Berlinale International Film Festival. Ryan Reynolds showed his pretty face and his co-star Hayden Panettiere glittered in gold to represent their movie Fireflies in the Garden. As always, Penelope is beautiful in black, there for her film Elegy while Diane Kruger looked stunning and thrilled to be on the red carpet on her home turf. The festival will be going on all week, and we can't wait to see who else comes out to shine and show off their new movies.

Penelope Goes Back to School

Penelope was looking super youthful with her new bangs on the set of her film Elegy in Vancouver this week. It's no mistake that she looks like a college co-ed, because in the film she plays a student who strikes the fancy of her professor, played by Ben Kingsley. Sounds like a recipe for drama. While it's a little odd to think of Penelope playing so young, she and Ben will definitely be a powerhouse on-screen duo. Plus it's not everyday Penelope gets to work with a Sexy Beast!

Reader Review of the Day: Rimmel Eye Magnifier Eye-Opening Mascara

Have you ever strayed from your usual product because a sale on a similar item caught your attention? That's exactly what happened to Autumns_Elegy, who recently tried out Rimmel Eye Magnifier Eye Opening Mascara ($4) with just OK results. Here's the scoop:

I got this mascara instead of Maybelline Define-A-Lash, as it was a couple of bucks cheaper and I was a bit short of cash at the time. I can't say I'm overly impressed. I don't get the nice long and lifted lashes that the product promised. Half the problem is the dinky little brush. I used an old Maybelline brush to apply the mascara and it came out loads better. It's still not the same lovely effect as Define-A-Lash, but not overly disappointing. This mascara works in a pinch, but I think I'll fork out the extra couple of bucks next time for something a little better.

Everybody loves finding a foundation that matches their skin tone to a T, and it's even more satisfying when that faultless shade is just under the $10 mark. Recently reader Autumns_Elegy reviewed Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Foundation ($10) with a SPF of 18. Here's why she liked it:

It matches my skin tone almost perfectly so I don't need to wear a lot to even out my skin. Being perfume-free means I don't get the midday itchies when I wear it for long periods of time, which is awesome when I'm at work. The only downside is that sometimes the foundation erupts out of the bottle when you open it. It's fairly wasteful, as I don't want to wear quite that much.

Penelope's Got It Covered For Vogue España

Penelope Cruz is no stranger to a Vogue cover, and she's on front yet again for the Spanish version's April issue. She's the pride of her country after taking home an Academy Award, and Penelope opened up to the magazine all about her life after Oscar. Her main focus these days is promoting her latest Almodovar collaboration Broken Embraces, which is already getting lots of buzz around Europe especially Spain. That won't be out in the US until the Fall, but another of her films, Elegy, was just released on DVD.
