What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

It's Tuesday, which means your Netflix queue is about to get a bit fresher and longer. I've gone through today's new DVD and Blu-ray releases and have some recommendations for what you should rent next.

The Proposal

This Summer's super successful rom-com, The Proposal, stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in a pretty predictable scheme (you know, girl proposes to boy to avoid deportation), but I enjoyed this surprisingly funny movie. I tend to like both Reynolds and Bullock in general, and their chemistry in this one is pretty irresistible. It was also an audience-pleaser, raking in enough money in ticket sales to make it one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time.

Drag Me to Hell

Drag Me to Hell, starring Justin Long and Alison Lohman, earned props in the horror genre for its clever premise and witty dialogue. Lohman stars as Christine, a bank teller whose life takes a turn for the terrifying when she is cursed by a gypsy. Long plays her boyfriend and sidekick who tries to help her regain control and banish the spirits.

I've heard this one is more fun than scary, and it marks Sam Raimi's return to the camp-horror genre (he's behind the Evil Dead franchise) and a respite from the Spiderman movies.

Land of the Lost

In Land of the Lost, Will Ferrell stars as Rick Marshall, who finds himself stuck in a parallel universe littered with dinosaurs and ape men. With his sidekicks Holly and Will, the trio takes on the adventure of a lifetime and try to find their way back home.

The Summer blockbuster didn't do too well in theaters, making some wonder whether Ferrell fatigue had set in. However, the fun casting of Danny McBride and Anna Friel as Will and Holly could make this movie watchable.

DVD extras include deleted scenes, a Danny McBride featurette, and a Devil’s Canyon Gift Shop Commercial and Tour.

Inspired: Patterned Lampshade in Drag Me to Hell

I must admit that I am dying to see Drag Me to Hell. I love the premise of the film, which seems especially relevant in today's foreclosure-prone real estate market. In the film, a loan officer (Alison Lohman) evicts an old woman from her home, and is then cursed because of it. Alas, I am the biggest scaredy cat when it comes to scary movies, and I doubt I'd ever sleep again if I saw the movie.
Still, I'm really enjoying many of the photos from the movie's set. I love the patterned lampshade in this photo, and inspired, decided to find some more. The first one that I found was the Selsey Mibo Shade ($100), which is similar to the shade in the film.

Up Soars at the Box Office

Pixar's Up had a great weekend at the box office, coming in at No. 1 with a whopping $68.2 million. That makes Up the third biggest Pixar debut ever (out of ten) behind The Incredibles and Finding Nemo. It's also worth noting that Up's debut bested Wall-E, which opened last year to $63.1 million.

Interestingly, this particular box office win "validates Disney’s decision to let its Pixar unit put creativity before commerce. Some Wall Street analysts . . . had predicted the film would have a difficult time attracting children because of its geriatric action hero." Hurray for putting story first!

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian continued to do well and scored second place over the weekend. Drag Me to Hell debuted at No. 3 followed by Terminator Salvation and Star Trek.

Movie Preview: Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell

Before there was the Spider-Man franchise, Sam Raimi was directing great horror-genre cult classics like Army of Darkness and The Evil Dead series. I think it's safe to say there will be many Raimi fans who are excited to see him return to horror flicks with the upcoming Drag Me to Hell.

Starring Alison Lohman and Justin Long, the movie is based on a short story written by Raimi and his brother. The trailer is . . . interesting. It's about a bank officer (Lohman) who denies the creepiest old lady ever a loan and then the old lady puts a curse on her (maybe Lohman's character should have watched Yes Man). It's campy and a little over-the-top in spots, but that's Raimi's style. The movie hits theaters May 29. To check out a preview, read more.

Actor Roy Scheider, best known for playing the police chief in Jaws, passed away at the age of 75 on Sunday, Variety reports.
Sunday's Grammy Awards were the third least-watched Grammy ceremony ever, writes the AP.
Juno, No Country for Old Men, and The Wire were big winners at the Writers Guild of America Awards over the weekend, Variety reports.
Kristen Bell will star in Disney's romantic comedy When in Rome, writes Hollywood Reporter.
ComingSoon has the news that Michelle Pfeiffer will star in Cheri, a film adaptation of the 1920s novel by French author Collette.

Yet another way to watch the Olympics this summer: Oxygen will carry gymnastics, tennis, and some other events, TV Guide reports.
Pitchfork reports that there's a Radiohead greatest hits album on the way.
According to Variety, Ellen Page will have the lead role in Sam Raimi's horror flick Drag Me to Hell.

The Office, "Double Date": Best Lines of the Night and Video!

I knew it was going to be hard to top the koi pond incident (and those Halloween costumes), but I was glad to see this week's The Office return to the storyline with new paramours Michael and Helene. This time, Pam is actually coming around to the idea of her mother dating her boss, but per his usual protocol, Michael is ready with a few blunders to messy things up. We also had a friendly competition between Andy and Dwight and - naked photos? Tsk, tsk Kelly. It's called subtle sexuality, key word being subtle.

Michael provided my favorite quote of the evening, but take a look at my list (spoilers!), and then weigh in with your own favorite zingers.

"If you clench your buttocks together when you're walking, you can really take the pressure off your knees."-Dwight
The who-can-outdo-each-other's-politeness competition between Dwight and Andy was pretty hilarious. Of course neither of their intentions were pure - Dwight wants to be kind so everyone owes him and he can unseat Jim as co-manager; Andy does it...well, pretty much because he has to be better than everybody else.

Yep, this week saw the return of the Michael and Helene's romance, when he takes his new girlfriend out to a birthday lunch with Pam and Jim. I'm glad the writers reintroduced it, but obviously Pam doesn't share my same enthusiasm.

"The only time you should care about a woman's age is if she's too young for you. And I am not robbing the cradle. If anything, I'm robbing the grave."-Michael
Ah Michael, always so sensitive to a woman's feelings. I loved watching him gradually panic as he realized Helene was older than expected. But dumping her on her birthday, in front of Pam and Jim? That was low, even for him. Such an ageist. Pam exacts her revenge though by beating him up. Check out the video of their showdown:

"What if Dwight dies and I still owe him something? That is the recipe for a ghost."-Andy
Can't blame Andy. I wouldn't want the ghost of Dwight Schrute after me either.

"What a waste of a day. I could've grown poison mushrooms that would've been this high by now."-Dwight

Dwight feels bummed that he couldn't get back at Jim - all that work going to New York just for bagels! - but I'm sure he'll concoct something for the next episode to take Jim down. Perhaps that's what the mushrooms are for?

"I saw my life flash before my eyes. I have four kids, and I have a hover car and a hover house. My wife is a runner and it shows."-Michael
Such a dreamer that Michael. After Pam slaps him across the face for calling things off with her mom, he starts imagining his future. I was really hoping that they'd drag out the coupling between him and Helene for at least a couple more episodes - do you think their romance is really dunzo?

Taylor, Johnny, Megan & Vampires Make Scream Awards Sexy

The Spike Scream Awards took over the Greek Theater in LA on Saturday night, bringing together the biggest names in Horror, Fantasy, Comics and Science Fiction. Vampires were of course some of the biggest winners of the night and the stars of The Vampire Diaries and True Blood were all in attendance. Kate Bosworth presented a statue to Alexander Skarsgard, amid rumors that there's something going on between them. Taylor Lautner was the only Twilight representative and debuted the "Behind the Scenes" New Moon footage, which wasn't much though more may come when the show actually airs. There were rumors that Kristen Stewart would make a cameo since she was back in LA, but fans were still satisfied to see sexy Taylor representing and all the shirtless Wolf Pack in the footage from the upcoming film. Johnny Depp accepted a spike for the incomplete Alice in Wonderland as well as presented an award of immortality to Keith Richards. Megan Fox expressed her gratitude to the Transformers franchise while Stephen Moyer had one of the sweetest moments of the night when he thanked the True Blood producers for being "surprising matchmakers."

On the red carpet, one of the night's winners Isabel Lucas chatted about spending last Halloween with Shia LaBeouf, though she admitted that the holiday isn't huge in her native Australia. She looked great in her Chanel dress and Jimmy Choo shoes even without getting a drop of sleep the night before. Eliza Dushku was sexy posing for the cameras and presenting with Dave Navarro - garnering cheers from her fans the whole time. Justin Long was out to support one of the night's big winners Drag Me to Hell and was friendly as he made his way into the awards. SJP Wants Us to Hear About Her Affection For Hugh

Sarah Jessica Parker was sporting a wig yesterday on the set of Did You Hear About the Morgans? in NYC. Lucky SJP is filming in her home city, which means she just might be available for those all-important school runs with James Wilkie. When she isn't with her son, she'll be hard at work with her costar Hugh Grant - and in a recent interview, she opened up about both guys and a little about herself. Here's more:

On her son, James Wilkie: "James always asks for five more minutes in bed – I have to drag him out at 7.30am. . . I don’t delegate that job of getting my son dressed and out of the door in the morning to anyone else unless I have to because I’m working. . . It’s not so much that I think I’m so incredibly interesting to be around, but I feel like I would lose out and be worse off if I didn’t do it. I’m not saying my son wakes up in the morning and is inspired by me, it’s just that I love being his mother. Children are so cute and talkative when you get them out of bed, vulnerable blabbermouths, but when they get older they talk less. As the days fly past, it’s only going to be a few more years that he likes me. Maybe he’ll always love me, but he might not always want to be around me – he might not always like me. He’s borderline embarrassed by me already, so…"
On her self-confidence: "I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about what to change. There are things we all have that we would like to work on, and I have a list of things that I could do better in my life. But as for the physical attributes, or lack of, I think a lot about how to be a better person instead. Better wife, better mother, better friend. Those I work on."
On Hugh Grant: "I think Englishmen live up to all the ideals and Hugh is a perfect example. He’s a definition for all of us less well-travelled Americans of the classic literary and cinematic Englishman – witty and brainy. There’s nothing smarter and sexier and more interesting than a brain, and I’m very excited about working with him.

Sunday Confessional: I Lied to My Boyfriend to Protect My Friend

Three years ago I met my boyfriend through my best friend's boyfriend, and the four of us have been a great group. But recently, they've been having some problems, so she and I have been logging in some girl time. A few weeks ago we went out for drinks and met some guys. They did their best to hit on us, and I politely shooed them away, but not before my friend started flirting with one. She had been drinking so I dragged her home and didn't think much of it.

Last weekend we went out again and I was shocked when she told me that the guy she had been flirting with was coming to meet us. I was angry, and told her I resented her for putting me in that position. I stormed out of the bar, but decided I'd wait a few minutes outside to see if she followed. When she didn't, I went back in to tell her I was leaving, only to find her making out with him. I pleaded with her to come with me, but she wouldn't listen so left alone.

The next day I talked to her and she claimed that she realized she had made a mistake, but needed time to sort things out before telling her boyfriend. But apparently the guys talked about how we got home at different times that night because my boyfriend confronted me, asking what happened. I knew that if I told him the truth he would feel obligated to tell his friend, so I told him that we got in a fight and she ended up hanging out with another girl friend of ours. It took some convincing, but he believed me. Now I feel completely awful. Even if it was to help my friend, I've never lied directly to my boyfriend before. If it all comes out, I know he'll be hurt. Do you think this is something I can be forgiven for?

Pop Watch: Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, Season Two, Ep. Three

Last night's installment of Secret Diary of a Call Girl shows us what happens when a client's wife finds out about the "other woman" that Belle is paid to be, and we also get to see Belle's complicated relationship with young attractive Alex develop further.

The episode starts with Belle/Hannah on a Saturday afternoon date at the movies with Alex. She doesn't know how to behave and is suitably awkward, although not quite so much as that hilarious first date in episode two. Belle doesn't know how to be a girlfriend, even though she gets paid £400 for the GFE - Girlfriend Experience - which involves chatting and cuddling. Her next client, Tony, is one of these GFE types, but things get tricky when his wife turns up on Belle's doorstep. Uh-oh.

Tony's wife thinks Belle's having an affair with her husband (real name Matt), and when Belle explains the real situation wifey runs to the bathroom to vomit! Alex calls and engages in some flirty banter with Belle, but she hangs up when wifey reappears with a bleeding hand. The two women have a frank conversation about what men really want, but when she finds Belle's sex toys she throws up yet again.
Bambi struts her way to Belle's and is full of excitement as she gives her a present from Balenciaga. She's now signed up with madam Stephanie and is loving the money and the attention, but Belle warns her not to get carried away. That's all we get to see of Bambi this episode, and although I found her pretty annoying to begin with, I'm now more intrigued and would like to see how her character develops.
Ben and Belle have a chat about Alex, but Ben is definitely all tied up with Vanessa and won't go for a drink with Belle, much to her annoyance. It seems to me like Ben is just being used as a plot device this series, and I'd like to see more of the complexities of his relationship with Belle come out in future installments.

Alex calls Belle again and she hangs up on him after a few minutes, yet again, when she finds Tony/Matt on her doorstep. He wants her sympathy to help deal with his wife's anger, but Belle explains he'll have to pay her if he wants her time, telling the camera that the escort/client relationship needs clear boundaries.
As Belle starts to get down to it with Tony/Matt she starts picturing his wife standing along side them, which completely puts her off and she tells him they can no longer see each other. This device was used in the first episode too, when Belle imagined what her family would say to her if they knew about her profession, and whilst I liked it then, I'm not overly fond of it being repeatedly used. What do you think of the device?
Finding out about the complexity of her client's marriage makes Belle even more confused about relationships, and she goes to Alex's flat to break up with him. He refuses to allow her to finish things, and when she says she's a very private person he says that's fine, he doesn't want to know everything about her. Hmm, we'll see if he changes his tune when he does find out. They consummate their relationship and Belle leaves for her 9.30 client with a grin on her face. Alex calls her again (this guy is incredibly eager!) and says he hopes she's thinking of him. If he knew she was with another man, maybe he wouldn't.
The preview for next week's episode has got me excited, as I felt last night's installment dragged a bit. The short teaser shows Ben telling Belle she has to come clean to Alex, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that revelation goes. I'm still enjoying watching Belle negotiate the difficulties of dating, but it does feel time to move the plot on now and see how Alex reacts when faced with the truth.
