Fringe, Big Love, The Hills, and More Get Slots at Paley Festival

What do The Hills, Fringe, and The Mentalist have in common? They've all been honored with spots at this year's Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles.

This year's lineup for the festival seems like an especially eclectic group of shows - there's reality, there's online (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), there's drama (Big Love), and there's even something we haven't seen yet: On April 19, the festival will screen the final three as-yet-unaired episodes of Pushing Daisies.

One thing missing from this year's lineup is any tribute to a classic or cult TV show, like last year's Buffy the Vampire Slayer reunion. I suppose it's possible that some of the original Beverly Hills 90210 cast members will show up for the 90210 event, but the focus definitely seems to be on the new class.

The festival runs from April 10-23 in Los Angeles. Would any of these shows get you to go? To see the full lineup, just read more.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Is Awesome, and Now Working Just Fine

I would have posted this yesterday when the first act of Joss Whedon's online musical series was available online except for the fact that it wasn't actually available for most of the day. All the fans (like me) who were lured in by the funny preview for the series were trying to view the first webisode, and too many curious eyes caused the site to slow to a halt.

Now it's working fine and it is my pleasure to announce that Act I of this funny, bizarre musical starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion is awesome. It's adorable and sweet and tons of fun to watch. The first few minutes of Dr. Horrible just talking to camera is a little slow, but once you get through that, there's a super-cute little musical number/love song set in a laundromat and the rest flows along nicely from there.

The only thing I'm not getting is why it's called "sing-along" when there's no real way to sing along (unless you watch a few times, I guess!). Tell me your thoughts below after watching the first act here. Enjoy!

Teaser for Joss Whedon's Web Series Starring NPH

Joss Whedon + Neil Patrick Harris + Nathan Fillion = awesome and hilarious. But of course, we already knew Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog would probably be great even back in March when we first heard the news. Now there's a teaser trailer for the musical Internet series, and it's campy, wacky, funny and adorable. As we learned before, the story is about "a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to."

Still not sure when the actual series will hit the Web, but for now, the teaser is really entertaining. To check it out, read more.

Joss Whedon's Other New Project Is . . . a Musical With NPH

So we've already heard the news that Joss Whedon, the man responsible for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is hitting television again this Fall with Dollhouse, a Fox series starring Eliza Dushku. That's all well and good. But what if I told you there was another Whedon project in the works, starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion? And what if I told you they'd be singing?

Well, that nutty news is totally true. The project is a three-part Web musical called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and Whedon described its plot like this: "It's the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to." NPH plays Dr. Horrible, Fillion is Captain Hammer, and Felicia Day (Buffy's Vi) plays the cute girl in question, Penny.

Did I mention they sing?

The project, which will be about 30 minutes long in all, was co-written by two of Whedon's brothers and one soon-to-be sister-in-law and started shooting this past weekend. There's no word yet on when it might actually hit the web, but I'll be keeping an eye out - this one's just too crazy to ignore.

Geeks We Love: Felicia Day of The Guild

We've loved Felicia Day even before she made us LOL during her first The Guild music video last year. Not to mention the fact that Felicia has starred and guest-starred in several geek-worshipped shows like Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and of course the online sensation The Guild (Season Three is available for download on iTunes now, and DVD on Feb. 15 for those of you who want to relive the magic), which makes her one of the more recognizable figures in geek culture today.

Felicia is not only a fabulous actress, but she's also an inspiration for geek girls everywhere - talented, beautiful, and knows her way around an MMO. Truth be told, we've got a bit of a girl crush.

Why do you think online gaming (and World of Warcraft in particular) is so close to people’s hearts and so widely accepted among such a variety of people?
It's hard to create a community in real life now, most of us don't even know our neighbors, our lives are so spread out between home and friends and work. Online gaming allows you to create a home and community of sorts, as well as provides engaging entertainment. I personally would rather be solving puzzles and finishing quests than passively absorbing a TV show or movie.

Do you think gaming and technology brings people closer together, or creates more of a distraction in relationships?
It depends on the person and how you use it. I certainly have been annoyed by people fiddling with their phones while I'm physically sitting across from them, but at the same time I keep in touch with my brother much better over the Internet than when we ever lived in the same city. I think the thing to be careful of is that technology or gaming doesn't become exclusionary to the people physically in your life.

What are some of your favorite/least favorite tech and/or gaming trends?
I'm very excited about 3-D entering into gaming. And technology like NATAL, where you're wholly and "physically" present in a virtual world, is so exciting, I can't wait to see what people develop for it. I also like the fact that casual gaming is experiencing a resurgence, I think that it will get a lot more people playing. I'm not crazy about the whole "watch this cut scene of stiff puppets with bad acting," but I think that is indicative of a larger trend that will be melding games and movies more and more. For that I'm excited.

Have you ever been served a geeky pick-up line? What are some of your favorites?
I don't remember a lot of pick up lines, I do get a lot of references to my hair and skin color, and someone offered to be my "WOW husband" over Twitter the other day. I guess for in-game only? Yeah, that was odd.

Are there any gadgets that you just can’t live without?
I love my Kindle. I'm a book lover and I didn't think I'd love it, but I eat up books on the thing. The convenience of ordering a book and have it downloaded instantly is fantastic. I really like the little chatpad I have for my Xbox controller because I can't type on it otherwise, and I love my DS for plane trips. Oh, and my iPhone for the Yelp App, so I never lack for a good cup of coffee in a strange city.

Do you ever Google yourself to keep up on what fans are saying?
I don't think there's a way for me to not hear what fans are saying, between Twitter and Facebook and Google Alerts etc; etc; It definitely keeps you humble, but it also keeps me going because I hear first-hand that people enjoy what I do. Or not. That's the great thing about the Internet, everyone has an opinion and a venue to express it.

What will you be doing this Valentine’s Day?
I will be doing a fan convention in Maryland. My boyfriend and I actually don't celebrate it, it's kind of a manufactured holiday to sell greeting cards and bad chocolates, right? And I think holiday prix fixe menus are a scam. As you can see I'm a romantic, haha.

Announcing the 2009 Emmy Winners!

Well, the Emmys are over, and we have our full list of winners. Were you guys surprised by this year's picks? (Check out all my Emmy polls here.) I thought the show started out pretty unexpectedly when underdogs Kristin Chenoweth and Toni Collete took home trophies, and there were a few other surprises along the way. Towards the end, though, the big wins seemed pretty predictable with Mad Men for drama, 30 Rock for comedy - no surprises there.

I had a lot of favorite moments of the night - more on those later - but mainly, I just enjoyed seeing Neil Patrick Harris as host. I loved everything from his opening to Dr. Horrible, and most of you thought his opening number was pretty great, too.

Joss Whedon Headed to the Director's Chair For Glee!

News doesn't get much better than this: Joss Whedon is coming on board to direct a future episode of Glee! I'm a long-time fan of the man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and his signature brand of biting humor. Whedon's no stranger to musicals either (hello, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). I think he'll be the perfect fit for the gleeks, and I can't wait to see what he brings to the show. A blood-sucking rival chorus? Robotic-type high schoolers a la Dollhouse?

Whatever the case, I bet a dose of Whedon sci-fi would add a lot of fun to the storyline, and I wouldn't mind seeing the show do something completely one-off for an episode. The show could benefit from some fresh meat, right?

Stars Shine At The Emmys Show and Behind The Scenes!

The stars arrived looking glam last night, and they were all there to see who would receive the statuettes at the Primetime Emmy Awards! 30 Rock and Mad Men were both big winners last night, taking the top Comedy Series and Drama Series trophies. Kristin Chenoweth was thrilled and tearful as she took to the podium to accept her Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy award for Pushing Daisies while Toni Collette won Best Actress in a Comedy for her amazing turn in The United States Of Tara. Leighton Meester, Blake Lively and Ricky Gervais were among those presenting awards, while Justin Timberlake won for his guest spot on Saturday Night Live.
