Would You Go to the Theater For a Four-Hour Movie?

For a few weeks now, Steven Soderbergh's super-long (over four hours) biopic about Che Guevara has been playing in select cities. In some theaters here in San Francisco, the two parts of the film are screened back-to-back with an intermission between them.

That's a long time in the theater (or . . . anywhere) for one movie.

Would you sit through a movie this long in the theater?

Movie Preview: Benicio Del Toro in Che

Director Steven Soderbergh's lengthy biopic of Argentine revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, collectively known as Che, will reportedly release in two parts: The Argentine will open in limited release on Dec. 12, with the second part, Guerrilla, following in January. The reception of the unfinished four-hour production that screened at Cannes was somewhat mixed (Variety's Todd McCarthy claims that Soderbergh has "withheld any suggestion of why the charismatic doctor, fighter, diplomat, diarist and intellectual theorist became and remains such a legendary figure; if anything, Che seems diminished by the way he’s portrayed here"). However, praise for Benicio Del Toro's frank, unflinching portrayal of Che is plentiful - even in the less-than-positive reviews.

Now there's a full-length US trailer, which uses dialogue sparsely, mostly allowing the powerful visuals to speak for themselves. It looks brutal, but it's also something I will simply have to see. To watch the trailer, read more.

Steven Soderbergh: From Che To Cleopatra

On Saturday night Steven Soderburgh's latest movie Che premiered at the London Film Festival. Benicio Del Toro plays the title role of Che Guevera in the biopic and he showed up looking very handsome in his suit alongside Steven. Also among the guests at the special screening was actor John Hurt. Steven's next project was announced last Friday and will be a rock musical version of Cleopatra starring Catherine Zeta Jones and Hugh Jackman - I can't wait to see either of these hit the big screen. Che is out in the UK on February 20, 2009.

Michelle Steals The Cannes Spotlight

Michelle Williams walked the red carpet at the Cannes premiere of new Scott Speedman/Rachel Blanchard movie Adoration and stole the spotlight in her gorgeous sparkly cream dress. Having spent lots of time with her beautiful Matilda over the past few months while they've adjusted to life without Heath, Michelle is slowly returning into the public sphere – and reminding me of her awesome personal style. I always love seeing what Michelle's going to pull out on the red carpet.

Yesterday also heralded a photocall for Benicio Del Toro's movie Che and a photoshoot with Quentin Tarentino, who fooled around happily with the photographers. Stay tuned to PopSugarUK for more Cannes photos, this time from yesterday's glam amFAR benefit.

Madonna Takes On Cannes

It was Madonna's turn to shine at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday as her labour of love I Am Because We Are premiered. She looked gorgeous in a sequinned, (slightly transparent) monochrome fringed dress and walked the red carpet with Guy. She then posed for some shots with her friend Sharon Stone, and they seemed to have a rather animated conversation!

Benicio Del Toro's latest movie Che (aka Guerilla) also had its first screening last night, and Benicio showed up in support along with co-stars Catalina Sandino Moreno, Julia Ormond, Franka Potente and director Steven Soderbergh. Other guests at the premiere included Diddy, Cannes juror (and best dressed) Natalie Portman, Naomi Campbell, Mike Tyson, Michelle Yeoh and Eva Herzigova in a statement-making dress.

Che Guevara's Granddaughter Shows Skin For PETA Campaign

PETA is targeting South America as the market for its latest campaign. The organization's spokesperson? None other than Lydia Guevara, granddaughter of Marxist leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara. In the organization's first-ever South American campaign for vegetarianism, the scantily clad Lydia, a vegetarian, wears nothing but bandoliers of baby carrots and a red beret, in a reference to her grandfather, a revolutionary who contributed to Fidel Castro's rise to leadership in Cuba.

"It very much evokes the tagline of the ad, which is 'Join the vegetarian revolution," said PETA representative Michael McGraw. "It's an homage of sorts to her late grandfather." What do you think of the campaign? Does it get your attention in the right way, or it is too racy and politically charged?

Do You Know Anyone Like The Goode Family?

An extremely politically correct cartoon-family is coming to a television near you. Mike Judge of King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-head fame has created a new show - The Goode Family - which premiers on ABC tonight.

The Goodes are many shades of green. They use reusable shopping bags (not the ones made in sweat shops), drive hybrid cars, recycle, and ask themselves: what would Al Gore do? In addition to being environmentally conscious, they're also socially aware: they're vegans, have a dog named Che, and they even adopted a little boy from Africa. (Once they adopted Ubuntu, they found out he was actually born to white Afrikaans parents in South Africa. They still have him wear traditional African dress.)

The premise sort of reminds me of the South Park episode all about smug people in San Francisco. In that episode, the "smug" (smog) from preachy, hybrid car owners ends up causing an environmental disaster. Despite the similarities in using progressives as their targets, The Good Family does treat the earnest clan a little kinder than South Park would, making it apparent that the characters have genuine intentions.

Penelope Adds a Goya to List of Award Season Honors

Penelope Cruz hopped from the Rome set of Nine to Madrid, where she walked the green carpet at last night's Goya Awards alongside her sister Monica and Benicio del Toro. Benicio took home the Best Actor statue for Che, and Penelope was crowned Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She's no stranger to the podium at the Goyas, but she was still deeply touched by the honor. Penelope didn't stick around Europe long - she made it to LA to attend today's Oscars luncheon. She recently opened up about her nomination, saying,

It’s not a lie that it is an honor to be nominated, and if I don’t win, I won’t be any less honored, but . . . look, ask anyone who is nominated. No matter what you think you feel about awards, when you’re there, sitting in that seat, with those people, all dressed up - of course you want to win!

She's facing stiff competition on Feb. 22, but she just got some extra practice yesterday delivering an acceptance speech.
