HBO Renews Its Vows With Big Love

Big news for Big Love: The polygamy drama will be back next year for a fourth season! HBO announced the renewal with a statement saying, "The series keeps getting better and better."

One thing that wasn't getting better, at least earlier this season, was the ratings - the show's season three premiere (which came after a long break caused in large part by the writers' strike) drew just 1.2 million viewers. But The Hollywood Reporter notes that the show's grown in the ratings each week since then, and the show's currently averaging about 5 million viewers a week once all the repeat airings are taken into account.

The show's excited co-creators gave E! a statement celebrating the good news, making the following promise to fans:

As season three continues they'll forget about the time they waited and get caught up in our best season ever. And we also swear we won't make them wait as long next year.

Well, that sounds promising. Tell me: Are you excited that there's more Big Love on the way in 2010?

Scarlett, Drew, Justin, and Ginnifer Are Very Into Afterparties

Drew Barrymore, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Scarlett Johansson kept the party going after the premiere of He's Just Not That Into You last night in LA. Jennifers Aniston and Connolly skipped the fun, but Ginnifer and Scarlett stayed to chat with Goodwin's Big Love costar Bill Paxton. Drew Barrymore mingled with the film's fellow producer, her partner and Jimmy Fallon's wife, Nancy Jovonen. Despite giving Justin a big hug, Drew wanted to set the record straight about her dating life. She said, "I'm the character I played in the film. I'm surrounded in gay men and I'm single." Single or not, it sounds like Drew bonded with her whole cast - even though she won't make it to Aniston's 40th birthday party next week.

First Look: Big Love Season Three

It's been such a long wait for the third season of Big Love. Thanks to the writers' strike, the HBO drama won't return till January - almost 18 months after it was last on TV.

But there are finally some real signs that we're getting close to the premiere, including the first couple of promos that HBO's rolled out over the past week or so. The first is creepy and moody; there's no dialogue, just the haunting sounds of the Black Keys song "Lies" while some seriously dark things take place in the brief video clips. The second includes interviews with several cast members talking about how the show has been "amped up" for the third season. Here's hoping that whatever we see in January makes this long wait worthwhile. JT Dances Pantless and Parties With Jennifer After SNL

While Paul Rudd hosted SNL this weekend, Justin Timberlake almost stole the show with his two hilarious appearances - check out his no pants dance moves after the jump. For the after party, the cast and friends headed to Dos Caminos to celebrate a successful show at the end of a long week of rehearsals. Jennifer Aniston joined in the fun, perhaps JT invited Mr. Mayer when they were chatting it up earlier in the week. Justin should be getting used to late nights in the city that never sleeps as he and Jessica are supposedly moving into a new $5.5 million condo soon. That lawsuit filed by a former worker at Southern Hospitality must not be too much skin off his back.

TV Tonight: Big Love, From the Beginning

HBO was kind enough to fill the Big Love-sized hole in my heart with a recap video a few weeks back. But if you'd rather catch up on the show's first two seasons the old-fashioned way, it will be possible starting tonight.

HBO2 will air one episode from the series in order for the next 24 Saturdays, starting at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT tonight. It's the first time I can remember that HBO has shown the series in its entirety, and it's a great opportunity to meet the Henricksons if you've yet to make their acquaintance.

Catch Up on Big Love in Four Minutes

This "Big Love in Four Minutes" video HBO just put together makes me a little sad, because it's still going to be a long, long wait to see the show's third season. Thanks to the writers' strike, the series - which should have been on right now - won't be seen again till January 2009.

The good news is, that should give anyone who hasn't seen the first two seasons of the drama plenty of time to get caught up the old-fashioned way, by renting DVDs or checking out episodes On Demand. But if you're just not sure you want to commit, this four-minute summary is a pretty good one, with all the typical dry humor these ". . . in x minutes" videos tend to have. (I especially like the little "bleeeep" noise that keeps recurring when they talk about video poker.)

At least I'll be able to get a fix of some of the actors in other roles before January - Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia and Ginnifer Goodwin in He's Just Not That Into You. For now, though, it's just good to see Bill and his wives together, however briefly. To check out the video, just read more.

"Big Love" Gets a Third Season of Love from HBO

Hooray for "Big Love"! HBO's polygamy drama will return for a third season - as many installments as Bill Henrickson has wives.

The show hasn't exactly had an easy year this year, holding down the fort for HBO alone on Monday nights. According to Variety, the show is averaging about 2 million viewers per episode - half what it got following "The Sopranos" in its first season. But HBO believes that over the course of a week of repeats, DVR playbacks and On Demand airings, the show rounds up as many as 6 million viewers. The new season order is for 12 episodes, same as the first and second seasons.

"Big Love" will get another shot on Sundays soon: HBO also announced that the final two episodes will air first on Sundays at 9 p.m., the slot currently occupied by "John from Cincinnati." "John" will vacate the slot as of Aug. 12, when its first season wraps up; "Big Love" then will take it over for episodes airing Aug. 19 and Aug. 26. Those episodes will air on Mondays as well.

Hilarious Fake Commercials for "Big Love"

While I was searching for those "Big Love" back story clips last week, I came across a couple of hysterical fake commercials HBO produced to promote the show's second season. Like the commercials for cremation shakers and fake skin in the first episode of "Six Feet Under," these false ads promote products that would make your life as a polygamist better.

The first, for "Eau de Polygamie," promotes a fragrance that will let you "set yourself apart from all his other wives." It's funny, but I don't think it's nearly as good as the spot for "Polygarol," a Viagra-type pill that promises to make sure the man has energy to take care of all his wives on "their night." I love how it copies every convention of Viagra ads, right down to the guy throwing a football through a tire - only this time, it's three tires. To check out the ads for yourself, read more

The Rest of the "Big Love" Back Stories

You guys were so excited about yesterday's "Big Love" back story clip that I decided to go see if the others were online. Good news: I've got 'em!

In the "Five Years Ago" clip, Barb - rocking a seriously bad mom 'do - visits Nicki in the hospital, and Nicki freaks out that Bill is going to expect her to have child after child forever. The scene really shows off how caring Barb is, as well as how vulnerable Nicki can be in the rare moments when she's not acting ridiculously stoic.

The most recent of the three back stories, 14 Months Ago, shows the wives, Bill and their kids living in one very crowded house. Margene decides to broach the idea of three separate houses, but it's not exactly well-received.

Cool Clip: "Big Love" Back Story

One of the first things I wondered when I started catching up on "Big Love" was how the Henrickson family came to be. Luckily, HBO is answering some of my questions with a series of three clips following the family's back story.

I first stumbled upon the clips when I checked out the series through Comcast's On Demand service, but at least one of them is online, and it's a doozy: Bill brings Margene home for the first time as the new babysitter, but Nicki sees through the ruse and realizes Bill's eyeing a new wife. (The other clips, by the way, show Barb comforting Nicki in the hospital after Nicki's first child was born and the three wives requesting separate houses.)
